On 7 April 2014, ASA Metal’s mine obtained 1 500 000 fatality free shifts. Thelast fatality at the mine was on the 18th of January 2010.

The Mine Manager, Mr Hardley Ramokgadi, thanked each employee fortheir commitment towards Zero Harm, and their contribution in making themine a safe place to work.

ASA Metal’s Mineachieved 1 500 000

Fatality FreeShifts

On Tuesday morning this weekthe communities of Wards 8and 10 adjacent to ImpalaPlatinum’s Marula PlatinumMine marched on the mine tohand over a memorandum, comprising of demands aboutthe relationship between thecompany and the parties thatare affected by the company’soperations in the area.

The memorandum, of whicha copy is in possession ofPlatinum Gazette, inter aliarequests a full report about theprevious Social Labour Plan(SLP) and consultation with theaffected communities regardingthe current SLP as perrequirement.

The memorandum alsodemand the immediatereinstatement and recognitionof the Marula CommunityDevelopment Agency and theMasedi Development Agencyand that the legal control ofcommunity income generatingprojects be headed by thesestructures. The group ofmarchers also demands de-registration of the MarulaCommunity Trust and theremoval of Marula CommunityChrome. The group furtherdemands that the tailings at themine be utilised for the benefitof the community theyrepresent and that the mineinvolve community structureswhen community issues arediscussed. The group saysengagement with traditionalauthorities (Magoshi) alone isnot acceptable. The group alsohas a wish for a tarred roadbetween Ga-Mahlokwane(Smoky Hills) and Ntswaneng. The group also has a gripe withcertain individuals and they

want them not to be involvedwith community activities. Thecommunity group gathered fromearly the morning at the R37Road and the Marula PlatinumMine T-junction from wherethey proceeded to the mine, some walking, some with theaid of taxis. When PlatinumGazette arrived at the scenethere were a lot of singing anddancing with the Police keepinga watchful eye on theproceedings.

A problem arose at noonwhen the memorandum wassupposed to be handed overand there was no one from thecompany’s head office toreceive it (the group claimedthey requested it). Tocomplicate matters a courtinterdict from the PraktiseerMagistrate’s Court surfaced(with Tuesday’s date stamp onit), prohibiting the march andgathering (which apparentlyonly arrived while the gatheringwas already in full swing. Thisinterdict was kept away fromthe people outside the gate witha representative of the GreaterTubatse Municipality telling thenewspaper that it will onlycomplicate matters to try andenforce the order at thatmoment.

In the end therepresentatives of the groupagreed to hand thememorandum to MarulaPlatinum’s Group ProtectionManager, Mr Johan Olivier, who duly received and signed iton behalf of the company andtold the community that thecompany will respond withinseven days as requested in thememorandum. Thereafter themarchers dispersed peacefully.

6 NEWS 16 MAY 2014

Ms Prudence Choma said: “A leopard neverloses its spots. Especially with Jacob Zumaas the President things will not change. Heis not going to change and things will neverimprove. The poor will remain poor. Onlyanother party will be able to bring change”.

Mr Phillip Mushaikwa said: “I think the lossof votes will be a motivation to improve onservice delivery. People usually do wellwhen they come from adversity. They’ll takethis serious because they want to stay inpower. It is good for the people becausenow they will work hard”.

Mr Mark Geddes said: “I think things will justcontinue as they did in the last 20 years. Idoubt if anything will change. We’ve hopedthat the opposition will get more votes sothat they can pressure the ANC for betterservice delivery”.

Mr Frans Mojela said: “They will improve onservice delivery after this election. They willwork hard. We learn from our mistakes. They will be scared to lose more support, sothey will perform now”.

Mr Andries Mnisi said: “I think many peoplethink the ANC cannot deliver. I don’t thinkthey will do better in the next 5 years. Maybeonce the DA or the EFF gets into powerthings will change”.

Mr Reginald Mashabela said: “The ANC willimprove because they’ll lose many membersif they don’t”.

Mr Dragon Maroga said: “Things will only beworse than before. They just look for ourvotes but after the election they forget aboutus, the communities. We will only seechange if another party takes over. If theydid not properly deliver in 20 years, how willthey do anything in the next 5 years? They’ve seen a hole for money while inpower, so it won’t be better”.

Mr Victor Mashilo said: “They are now afraidof the smaller parties, especially the EFFbecause of their policies. We will seeamazing service delivery now because theANC is afraid of losing power”.

Mr Duncan Maangoale said: “No, they won’twork harder than before. The ANC mustreshuffle the bad elements in the party – likeZuma. They can deliver, they must just workhard. They are not too scared of losing moresupport, but the people want services.People have been voting for the party andnot the people”.

Mr Brian Mogakane said: “I think it willcontinue like in the last 20 years. Theleaders are confident that the people willvote for them, but there is now a newgeneration that grew up after apartheid. Therace card won’t stand with them anymore.Change will come in the form of a new partyin power if the ANC don’t change their ways.Either they improve or the country’sleadership will change”.

Mr Godfrey Bhisamphiri said: “The ANC willdo much better this time around. They willget back the votes in the next election. Thisis their last chance, you know. They need toimprove to prove to the people they can trulydeliver. They will work hard”.

As the dust settles after South Africa’s nationalelection marking 20 years of democracy, theANC is still the people’s favourite party. Theywalked away with almost 11.5 million of the18.5 million votes cast on Wednesday lastweek. The party has however had a decline insupport compared to previous elections.Despite a population increase, support hasdropped by about 11% over the last 10 years. In Limpopo the ANC is going strong. With79.25% of the votes cast in Greater Tubatsegoing towards them. The closest oppositionparty was the EFF with 13.50% of the votes. The DA, formerly the official opposition partyslipped down to third place by securing 3.29%of the votes cast for provincial governmentwithin the Greater Tubatse Municipality. 90083 votes were cast for provincial governmentin Greater Tubatse. This week readers spoke the PlatinumGazette about whether they think the slowdecline in support will serve as a motivationfor better service delivery in the coming 5years or not. Many white readers declined to appear in thenewspaper as they are afraid of airing theirpolitical views. One woman stating that shevoted for the first time, said that she voted forthe DA in the hopes that Lindiwe Mazibukuwill continue to be a force to be reckoned within parliament and so bring about better servicedelivery. “Now she is going to Harvard and Iam stuck Helen Zille as leader who seems toprefer dancing to confronting issues”.A black reader also declined to comment forfear of his position within the ANC. He said: “Iam sorry, but I cannot comment what I trulyfeel as I am too involved”.

Ms Johanna Selahle said: “The ANC isgoing to perform more and more and more.Other parties challenge them. I hope thatfrom today onwards the ANC is going towork to deliver”.

Ms Mokgaetsi Moimana said: “If they don’treduce corruption they’ll be out in the nextelection. People are sticking to thembecause of the grants. Before the electionpeople were told they might not get thegrants anymore if they don’t vote for theANC”.

Mr Musa Magagula said: “It won’t have animpact. There had already been plans inplace to address the concerns with regardsto service delivery etc. The ANC is notconcerned about votes lost to theopposition”.

Ms Lily Raphela said: “By losing those votesthey will now be forced to work hard. Theydid not think the EFF will make it and nowthey see they can lose votes to the EFF.The ANC will work hard to deliver. Theymust now work to keep the power. It is goodfor the people now. The ANC was relaxingevery day in the past 20 years, now theysee the boat can sink. This will benefit thepeople”.

Mr Obed Mokwena said: “I don’t think theANC will lose support in the next 5 years. They will do better service delivery”.

Me Joyce Komane en MeThandy Moriri sê: “Die ANCsal nou eers alles uitsort watnie reg was nie en dan salalles beter gaan. Hulle kannie bekostig om nog steun teverloor voor die volgendeverkiesing nie”.

Mr James Segoapa said:“They must improvethemselves by deliveringservices. They are scarednow but they must not giveup. Just keep concentratingon delivering to the people”.

Mnr Oupa Mkhabela sê: “Zuma is nog diePresident, so die ANC het nie regtig geskriknie. Hulle sal net soos altyd aangaan nahierdie verkiesing. Hulle sal eers heeltemalteen ‘n ander party moet verloor voor dingebeter sal wees”.
