Countrywide 12 teachers from 12 schools were selectedas winners, in thiscase Ms Leshilo Reshoketsoe Matlale from Selala Primary School at Ga-Selala between Burgersfort and Moroke was nominated by the school principal, MrsMakofane.

After being notified that she was a winner, representatives of Media 24 Weeklies as wellasi the project partners, Oxford University Press and iSchoolAfrica visited the schoolto handover the prize on Wednesday. The event was also attended by representatives ofneighbouring schools and the local government intitutions.

The prize the school won through Ms Matlale’s participation in the project consists of:

· An Apple iPad lab worth R120 000. The lab has 20 iPads, each with a cover, 16GB memory and WiFi; a MacBook Pro laptop and a multi-adaptor, a projector; and aniTunes budget big enough to download as many educational apps as the teacher mightneed.· The winning teacher will receive an iPad to use in the classroom and for personaluse, courtesy of iSchoolAfrica.· The teacher will be trained to use the iPad as an educational tool and shown howto integrate it successfully into the South African curriculum.· The teacher will also become part of the iSchoolAfrica iPad community, where theycan share skills and best practice.· A needs analysis will be done by Oxford University Press of what the school needsin terms of textbooks and study guides.· R20 000 worth of textbooks, reading books, study guides and dictionaries will besupplied after the analysis.· Schools will also be included in the Oxford Focus School project, which offers arange of benefits including teacher training workshops.

More than 100 schools in South Africa use iPads and the results speak volumes. “The worldis being revolutionised by the iPad and if SA’s children can’t experience it first-hand they’llbe left behind,” says Michelle Lissoos, head of iSchoolAfrica. “We believe iPads provide newand engaging ways to learn and understand complex concepts. Life sentencefor Tolo’s

killers

Three men were jailed for life by the Limpopo HighCourt last week Thursday for the murder ofCongress of the People (Cope) MP Jack Tolo,Limpopo police said.

Police spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi saidPeter Motebele, 36, was sentenced to lifeimprisonment for murder and 20 years forhousebreaking and robbery.

Oscar Choma, 33, was sentenced to lifeimprisonment and 15 years, and Alpheus Molepo,46, was sentenced to life and 25 years.A fourth man, King Solomon Nkosi, 40, alsoimplicated in the murder, was still in hospital underpolice guard for a serious chronic illness.

He would be tried alone after he recuperated. Seven peoplewere initially arrested for the crime.Three were lateracquitted.

Tolo was murdered at his home in Ga-Masha,Sekhukhune, on 21 August 2011. His family was tied upbefore he was shot, and the attackers demanded money, jewellery, and cellphones. His cellphone was laterrecovered from one the men.

Cope in Limpopo said it was satisfied with the outcomeof the trial. “We are pleased with the investigative work ofthe police to a large extent,” said spokesperson MotlatjoThetjeng. “We still believe that more could have been donethat would have ensured that the other three that wereacquitted were also put behind bars for life.”

Pretoria Prison renamedafter Kgoshi Mampuru II

President Jacob Zuma officially renamed theDepartment of Correctional ServicesPretoria Management Area to the KgoshiMampuru II Management Area onWednesday.

Addressing dignitaries such as theMinister of Correctional Services, Mr SbuNdebele and other Ministers, GautengPremier, deputy ministers, the ExecutiveMayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, the municipality’s Speaker and the membersof Mayoral Committee of SekhukhuneDistrict Municipality, the CorrectionalServices Commissioner and all seniorofficials, the president said the event formedpart of the celebration of Freedom Monthwhich is also Heroes Month in our country.

“This is sadly the month during which welost selfless national heroes such as formerANC President Oliver Reginald Tambo, former SACP general secretary andMkhonto Wesizwe Chief of Staff Chris Haniand the young Solomon Mahlangu who wasexecuted here at Pretoria Central Prison forfighting for the freedom we enjoy today. Atthe same time, April is the month offreedom. It is the month during which wemade history by burying a painful historyand began to build the future together. It isthe month during which South Africanselevated reconciliation and forgiveness, andwe decided to emphasise our unity indiversity and minimise that which divides us.Part of that reconciliation includes therenaming of geographic and place names aswell as landmarks. This is meant to reflectour diverse political and historical heritageand to heal the wounds of the past.

As South Africans from all walks of life, regardless of the role we played in history orwhat we believed in then, have aresponsibility to respect and acknowledgethe past, celebrate the present and build thefuture together.Government has anextensive on-going heritage programme that

includes the upgrading and declaration ofhistoric sites to ensure a morerepresentative and inclusive South Africanhistory and heritage. More importantly, thisalso contributes towards shared values anda common national identity in the country.

Furthermore, the building andmaintenance of new monuments and historicsites has a greater potential to stimulateeconomic activity and create much neededjobs in communities where these sites arelocated.

These sites will also contribute towardscultural tourism both domestically andinternationally. We will work together withthe people of South Africa and the world toensure that we preserve and promote ourrich cultural heritage.

We regard this work as central towardstransformation, nation building, nationalidentity and building a socially cohesiveSouth African society that is non-racial, non-sexist, democratic, united and prosperous. The renaming of the Pretoria ManagementArea falls within that category of promoting ashared heritage”

President Zuma then explained further“Kgosi Mampuru was hanged on 22November, 1883, here in Pretoria prison, which makes it fitting to name this area afterhim. In the Book Long Walk to Freedom,President Mandela states the following:‘South Africa’s history includes manyfamous political trials. There was the case ofMampuru, the rightful heir to the Bapedithrone, who was executed for publicviolence and revolt and murder ofSekhukhune in 1883 and who gaveCommandant General P.J Joubert and hisburgers a lesson in mobile warfare…..’

The new name should create a generalfeeling of belonging, because it captures ourhistory and creates a context of relevance. We are pleased therefore, to launchFreedom Month with such a historic event”.

Poverty and unemployment in Ga-Masha in Ngwaabe, Steelpoort wasrecently dealt a serious blow. Thanksto Two Rivers Platinum for theirinnovative thinking and genuinecommunity developmentprogrammes. EVA Smile Car Wash, unique to this area, was launched bythe Business Leader of Two RiversPlatinum Mine today.Receiving their first client, whohappened to be Mr Adriaan de Beer, the Business Leader at Two RiversPlatinum, Francis Moshidi, one of theco-owners of the EVA Smile Car Washsaid, “Today I am living testimony ofperseverance. Nobody ever thoughtI would come this far. My dreams hascome true, thanks to Two Rivers’Youth EntrepreneurshipDevelopment Programme. I hope thiswill now motivate other youngpeople in my community to stand upand take opportunities afforded to usby the mines in our area”. The totalproject sponsorship, which wasmainly focussed towards theconstruction of the modern car wash, consisting of ten wash bays andwendy-house for equipment storage, consumables as well as high powercar washing equipment, is worthNinety Thousand Rand (R90,000).“Although this is just the beginning,we can now see the light at the endof the tunnel. TRP gave us wings andwe can only carry on from here, saidanother co-owner of EVA Smile CarWash, Violet Matenche. The projecthas changed my life for the better.Being a women-owned enterprisefrom a rural set-up like ours, especially where women are breadwinners in several households, it willbenefit more than just a few families

and also give rural women hope. Wehope other mining operations in thearea can emulate what TRP is continuingto do for our communities”, concludedMiss Matenche. The project has createdfive new job opportunities for youthfrom the local communities. The newowners of the car wash, namely, VioletMatenche and Francis were drawn fromGa- Rantho Village and Ga-Masha(Kalkfontein). Having listened to theimmediate communities’ cry foremployment and having acknowledgedthat any single entity alone cannotcreate the required jobs or absorb all theunemployed youth in the area, itidentified various business opportunitieson the mine and helped establish avarious SMME, gave them the necessarytraining and skills transfer and donatedbasic equipment, kitting their membersand employees with safety gear as wellas facilitating the registration of the co-operatives.The small micro and medium enterprises(SMMEs) have been accepted as theengine of economic growth and forpromoting equitable development. Themajor advantage of the sector is itsemployment potential at low capitalcost. The current National DevelopmentPlan (NDP) is challenging all SouthAfricans to align with the governmentvision and the establishment of suchinitiatives will strengthen the NDP’svision. In order to deal effectively withchallenges of inequality, poverty andunemployment in the country, we mustassist by supporting the SMME sector”said Adriaan de Beer, the BusinessLeader of Two Rivers Platinum. “At TwoRivers we don’t just produce qualitygrades of platinum, we also producequality and sustainable SMMEs in ourlocal communities. This in turn creates

Young women and youth from Kalkfonteinand Ga-Rantho in Ngwaabe will EVA Smile

additional jobs for the unemployed fromthe local communities. And we believethat Two Rivers can only becomesustainable and succeed as a mine, if thecommunities around it are also stableand successful,” concluded Mr de Beer. Two Rivers Platinum, is not just a well-managed and profitable mine in theEastern Limb, it continues to lead theway in ensuring that the communitiesaround its operation also benefits fromits success.“We have established similar initiativesin the past few years and this includedestablishing and supporting localSMMEs providing services to the mineand the local communities, ranging fromwaste management and recycling, steelrepairs and steel manufacturing. Westrongly believe that the success of theseinitiatives depends on the support theyreceive from the local communities, employees, the municipalities and the

local mines. As a collective, the mineoperations and local government can domore for the local communities,” saidFrancois van Heerden, the Mining Leaderand the car wash sponsor from Two RiversPlatinum.Over the years, companies imported steelmanufactured play equipment forrecreational purposes and donated themto various community basedorganizations. This deprived local entitiesand individuals job opportunities andmost importantly depriving the localeconomy a chance to grow. TRP havebroken this cycle by faci litating theestablishment of a successful women ledSMME specializing in the repairs andmanufacturing of steel products. The localmines can now procure steel repairservices from an empowered entity andthe communities can procure gardenfurniture, braai stands, recreationequipment manufactured locally.

That is what I would like to see.Not only artisans, but entrepreneursbenefiting from technical skills to helpmake their businesses successful”.

The high rate of unemployment in this areacombined with a low rate of education wasthe motivation for the establishment of theTraining Centre. At the Training Centre various short coursesas well as learnership training is provided. Ms Vinolia Maroga said: “They must releasehim to die at home”.

Mr Jabu Phasha said: “Keep him in jail. Hekilled somone so he must serve hissentence. Die in jail!”

Ms Precious Bhembe siad: “He is old, he issick, let him out. The guy is dying, there is nouse keeping him in jail”.

Me. Theresa Correia sê: “My man is vermoor,so ek weet hoe dit vir die familie voel. Asiemand jammer is daaroor vat dit nie die seerweg nie. So hy moet maar sit. Ek het geensimpatie met hom nie. Hy het ‘n keusegemaak”.

Ms Precious Ngomane, Ms Thelma Matlala and Ms Homola Lesese said: “He must go out. What happened to forgiving and forgetting?”

Mr Sylvester Hlabathi and Mr William Maphanga said: “They have to give him parole. Lots ofguys are out with sick parole - look at Shabir Shaik. But the question on the other hand ismust everyone who gets sick in jail get parole?”

Me. Daphné Rheeders en me. Annatjie Rheeders sê: “Hulle kan hom ‘n vergunning doen enhom laat gaan op parool. Veral omdat hy siek is. Kanker is ‘n lelike ding”.

Twenty years ago Chris Hani wasassassinated in his driveway in Boksburg.Hani spent 30 years in excile leading theANC’s military wing, MK. He was named “oneof the greatest revolutionaries the countryhas ever known,” by former President NelsonMandela. His death was plotted and executed byJanuzs Walus and Clive Derby-Lewis whowanted to mobilise white people into rebellionand destabilise political negotiations duringthe early 1990s. Derby-Lewis gave Walusthe gun which he used to assassinate Hani.Derby-Lewis’ wife assisted them with namesand addresses of possible targets includingNelson Mandela, Steve Tshwete and MacMaharaj. Hani was the SACP generalsecretary at the time of his death. One of his killers Derby-Lewis (now 77) isapplying for release on parole. His latestattempt is the last in a whole string ofapplications over an almost 20 year period. He was convicted within six months of themurder and his sentence turned into lifeimprisonment after the death penalty wasabolished in 1995. At the Truth andReconciliation Committee’s amnesty hearingsboth Derby-Lewis and Walus’ applicationswere rejected. Derby-Lewis appealed thisdecision in the Cape High Court in 2000. Hisbid failed. In 2009 the North Gauteng HighCourt did not grant him leave for parolealthough Derby-Lewis’ lawyer argued that heis older than 65 and had been rehabilitated. In 2010 he again applied for parole afterhaving served more than 15 years of hissentence and being over 70. In 2011 hemade an unsuccessful attempt for medicalparole. He has cancer, hypertension andgangrene according to his application. This week Derby-Lewis’ latest attempt tosecure medical parole was denied by theMedical Advisory Board.Derby-Lewis now want to make use of theinitiative from Correctional Services MinisterSbu Ndebele through which victim-offenderdialogue is facilitated. The idea of theprogramme is to assist with the problem ofover-crowded prisons as early release maybe negotiated after reconciliation between theoffenders and the victims. Derby-Lewis nowwants to meet Hani’s wife Limpho toapologise for his role in the assassination. She has however reacted that she wants nopart of his plans. The SACP and the family has consistentlystood against any parole possibility for theconvicted killers. The SACP believes thereare still too many loose ends surrounding thecase. We asked readers what they think about thepossible release of Clive Derby-Lewis onparole?

In one room you could not even stand anymore. Deepholes in the ground made lessons in there impossible. This and two other classrooms in a bad state at MaokengSenior Secondary School in Kgautšwane were renovatedduring the last easter holidays. Due to the poor finance situation of the school, it was notpossible for them to improve the rooms from the school’sbudget. So, German volunteer Anne Ellermann, workingat Maokeng for one year, decided to fundraise in Germanyfor the renovation of the rooms – with success. The schoolthat she attended herself as a learner until last year, the“Ohmoor-Gymnasium” in Hamburg, started some differentmeasures to collect money for Maokeng. They sold cakesduring the breaks or donated the money they earned fromthe ticket sales of a drama play. With that money, it was possible to buy the buildingmaterials needed. It was bought at Builder’s Market, whounfortunately did not support the project themselves.

Maokeng Secondary renovated withdonations from Germany

During the last days of the holiday, five German volunteersstaying at Kgautšwane Community Development Center(KCDC) started the renovation. They filled the holes in thefloors with cement, also repaired the walls, painted therooms completely new and fitted two new doors. Alltogether, they spent more than 120 hours working atMaokeng. The tools were borrowed from the friendly localcommunity. After the renovation has been finished, the rooms changedtheir outward appearance completely and are now fullyusable for lessons again.Even if the renovation is already a big step forward, thereare still some rooms in a bad state. “It will be highlyappreciated if anyone can contribute more donations toimprove the other rooms”, Anne Ellermann told PlatinumGazette, “however, I hereby want to thank ‘Ohmoor-Gymnasium’ for their big help to improve the situation atMaokeng Secondary School”.

The hard work by the volunteers paid off. The classrooms lookedbrand new at the start of the new school term.
