WELCOME

Welcome to the 39th Annual Meeting of the Christian Ophthalmology Society! On behalf of the entire COS board, we welcome you to Grand Rapids! We pray that you will be blessed by the content of the meeting, the interactions with colleagues and friends, the evening worship, and your time with family. Since 1977, the goals of our society are to:

Develop unity in friendship among ophthalmologists in Christ Encourage medical students, house officers and fellows in their walk with the Lord Support other physicians’ faith in Christ regardless of denominational background Hold meetings with emphasis on the family so that all family members will feel at home and enjoy

the surroundings Develop new professional acquaintances and get to know the families of colleagues who love the

Lord Cooperate with and pray for missionary ophthalmologists Pray for revival, particularly in medicine

We are privileged to have Dr. Allen Foster sharing this year during our Wednesday and Thursday ses-sions. He is one of world’s foremost experts on global blindness and disability and has been involved on many forefronts. He is a wonderful storyteller and passionate about his faith as it has propelled him to serve around the world for his entire career. He and his wife Dr. Penny Foster have traveled from their home in London to be with us. Our mission’s emphasis day on Thursday explores the challenges of global blindness treatment and the choices that we can make which will make a difference! We’ll explore management of global eye diseas-es as well as a special session featuring any registrant called “Fascinomas & other weird ones: most challenging career cases.” We are blessed to host nearly 25 medical students, house officers, fellows as grant recipients at this meeting. You won’t want to miss our 2nd annual Super Bowl of Grand Rounds on Friday in which an op-portunity to present a Grand Rounds case has been given to each grant recipient in a fast paced and fun manner. This year, Thursday night is a free night for families and friends to enjoy a meal out in Grand Rapids. We invite you to join us on Friday night to hear testimonies from our house staff attendees. On Saturday night, we culminate with a wonderful message from Dr. Erwin Lutzer, pastor of the Moody Church, Chica-go, IL. For those who are able to stay through Sunday morning, we will enjoy worshipping together and hearing Dr. Ben Roberts sharing on using Bible stories for effective gospel communication. Grand Rapids and Michigan has so much to offer our families and we hope you will find time to enjoy some of the offerings: John Ball Zoo, Meijer Gardens, Michigan Adventure Park, Lake Michigan beaches and more. Lastly, please take time to stop and get to know each of our exhibitors who have graciously supported this meeting for our benefit. We have a record number of sponsors this year and want them to feel wel-come each year at our annual meeting. We trust that you will thoroughly engage in all this meeting has to offer and encourage your colleagues to attend future meetings. MMC Medical (www.mmcmedical.net)

When it comes to financing did you know that most hospitals do not borrow money from Commercial Banks? No, they obtain their financing institutionally from the Capital Markets where they are able to structure financing at 20-40% below the prime rate. For example the current prime rate (per the WSJ) is 3.25 and most hospital debt is in

the 2.5% range and below. MMC is a pioneer in Capital Market financing and first introduced this type of financing first to the Church, Christian School and College Market over 12 years ago. As a Registered Municipal Advisor, we can

now provide that same expertise that will help lower debt service costs for Health Practitioners. If you have current practice & facility related debt or have new a project planned costing $3 million or more and want similar interest

rates (2% or less) as hospitals get then you should contact our firm.
