What are the key characteristics for each?Give an example of where each can be found.9Types of Plate Boundaries1. Divergent plate boundaries : 2. Types of Plate Boundaries:

1. Divergent plate boundaries : Mid-ocean RidgeRift valley :sea floor spreading: Fissure volcanoes

Divergent plate boundaries are caused when two plates move away from each other (diverge). When they move apart from each other a gap is created. The gap is filled with hot, molten lava that solidifies when it reaches the surface (meeting either the sea or air). Land is therefore formed. Earthquakes and volcanoes are associated with constructive plate margins.

Trench : Island arc : Great earthquake: Active volcano :

2. Convergent plate boundaries :

2.1 Oceanic vs. oceanic Volcanic Mountain range : Trench : Deep earthquakes2. Convergent plate boundaries : 2.2 Continent vs. oceanic

Mountain range : 2. Convergent plate boundaries : 2.3 Continent vs. continent

3. Transform plate boundaries : transform fault : shallow earthquakes:
