PlantHUB 1st ANNUAL MEETING

27/11/2017 – 29/11/2017 (3 days)

with arrival on Sunday 26/11/2017

The 1st PlantHUB annual meeting was composed of a one-day retreat (Monday) and two-days PhD training on Innovation Management (Tuesday, Wednesday) organised by the PlantHUB programme office. The aim of this first scientific retreat was to get to know each other and to exchange knowledge and expertise. The ten PlantHUB research projects are contributing to different innovations in the area of plant breeding and production. We took up the spirit and developed ideas about how to benefit from our partnership. At the beginning the ten PhD students presented their research projects, including the contribution of the respective academic and industry partner involved. In the afternoon, the first integration workshop took place with the aim to get to know each other, to foster common interests and to exchange knowledge. Each academic and each industry partner presented a 3’ minutes pitch, highlighting their greatest achievements and connections to plant breeding and production followed by a group discussion on: what is plant breeding in 20 years? In the evening all, academic and industry partners came together with the PhD students and the PlantHUB programme office and enjoyed the traditional Swiss kitchen in the restaurant Walliser Keller, which served "SwissAlpeChuchi" such as cheese fondues and raclette. The following two days were reserved for the training of the ten PhD students in Innovation Management provided by Dr. Andreas Peter from University of Applied Sciences St.Gallen (FHS St.Gallen).

Day 2 – Tuesday 29/11/2017: PhD Training in Innovation Management

Day 3 – Wednesday 30/11/2017

Location: ETH Zürich, Tannenstrasse 7, 8092 Zürich: ML E13

The course on innovation management has been designed with the aim to provide the PhD students with fundamental skills regarding the management of innovation processes and employing innovation methods. Being able to assess and employ different innovation processes and methods represents a critical skill in the further professional career of independent researchers, innovation managers or entrepreneurs in plant sciences.

By the end of the course the PhD students:

- understand different processes and strategies used in innovation management (Design-driven Innovation, Open/Closed Innovation

- are able to use creative methods to reflect, collaborate and present research work (Visual Thinking, Lego Serious Play)

- understand the role, trends can play to inspire new ideas and opportunities - can build their own business cases (Business Model Canvas) - have reflected on potential implications innovation management has for their

research project

PlantHUB 2nd ANNUAL MEETING

19/11/2018 – 23/11/2018 (5 days)

with arrival on Sunday 18/11/2018

The 2nd PlantHUB annual meeting was composed of a PhD retreat coupled to the mid-term review meeting (Wednesday) and two training workshops on Entrepreneurship (Monday-Tuesday) and on Patenting (Thursday-Friday) organised by the PlantHUB programme office. The retreat was in scope of the PlantHUB Midterm review meeting, presenting the scientific progress of the individual fellowships as well as the progress of the overall programme. At the beginning the PlantHUB programme office gave a coordinator’s report, about the progress in science, training, network and management. Afterwards the PhD students presented the scientific progress of their research projects and their achievements so far. The second integration workshop took place with the focus on non-invasive imaging technologies, headed by Dr. Diana Santelia (University of Zurich) and served as a forum to exchange research and innovation activities within the consortium and develop ideas for further collaboration. The aim of the workshop was to provide an overview of laboratory and field-scale phenomic approaches to studying plant traits, incl. data handling strategies. In the evening academic and industry partner came together with the PhD students and the PlantHUB programme office and continued the discussions during a common dinner.

AGENDA Day 1 –Monday 19/11/2018: PhD Training in Entrepreneurship

Day 2 – Tuesday 20/11/2018

Location: ETH Zürich, Tannenstrasse 7, 8092 Zürich: ML E13

The course on Entrepreneurship has guided the PhD students through the business development pipeline. All 10 ESRs have gain entrepreneurial skills and mind-set allowing them to create and set up innovative products and businesses. With practical tools and exercises, the PhD students have been guided through the business development process. Additionally, they learned about different supporting and coaching opportunities helping them to found their own company (i.e. innosuisse)

Learning Objectives: - Foster entrepreneurial mind-set - Understand the process of commercial exploitation of research results - Create idea and identify opportunities internally and externally for enterprises

Develop motivation to take forward enterprising ideas - Is aware of supporting institutions providing targeted training and coaching to start-

ups

By the end of this course participants ESRs gained entrepreneurial skills allowing them to exploit their knowledge and ideas and develop the commercial potential it.

Day 4 –Thursday 22/11/2018: PhD Training in making the most out of my research –

Day 5 – Friday 23/11/2018 Patents and other things I cannot afford to ignore

Location: ETH Zürich, Tannenstrasse 7, 8092 Zürich: ML E13

Over the last decades, science has become a productive source of technological innovation, leading to commercial products and new markets. Furthermore, the IP databases, in particular for patents, are playing an increasing role in knowledge finding and problem solving for researchers in academia. Along with this on-going development, knowledge in intellectual property (IP) is becoming more and more important for researchers in bioscience. At the end of this two-day workshop, participants will master basic knowledge on IP protection and its challenges, including ethical considerations related to IP, in an academic environment and in a spin-off company alike. Equally important, the participants will learn how to use the vast library of knowledge in patent databases to advance research. The workshop consists of interactive lectures and hands on exercises that will allow discussing the pros and cons of the current IP systems, in particular patents. Learning Objectives: Gain a sufficient understanding of IP rights as they apply to own research; Has a sufficient understanding on the role of patents for the transfer of knowledge in our society; Knows the basic does and don’ts for handling IP rights.

Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Heinz Müller, Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property, Bern

PlantHUB 3rd ANNUAL MEETING

19/11/2019 – 20/11/2019 (2 days)

with arrival on Monday 18/11/2019

The 3rd PlantHUB Annual Meeting was coupled to the industry visit to one of the industrial partners within the consortium and therefore took place in Copenhagen at the premises of Carlsberg Research Laboratory (CLAB). During the PhD retreat the individual fellow reported exploitable results of their individual projects, whereas exploitation is the use of results for commercial purposes or in public policymaking. Though the fellows reflected the following questions: What outputs have been created? What kind of processes or applications can be exploited? How will the outputs be made available during and after the project? Who are the potential users of your results? What research questions remain to be answered after project duration? The integration workshop on efficient strategies for genome sequencing and assembly was moderated by Prof Bruno Studer (ETH Zurich) with contributions from the University of Zurich and BaseClear. For example, Prof Elena Conti (University of Zurich) gave an interesting insight in high-quality genome assembly efforts (i.e., reference genomes), especially in light of on-going international efforts such as the Earth Biogenome Project.
