Our Team Dear Friends, Clients and Readers,On the heals of college and high school graduations, and with all of

the summer break preparations made, we are here in July to remind you that August is right around the corner, which means...our Back to School

issue! Sorry to step on the euphoria of schedule-less summer time, but as a quarterly publication, this is what we do. We get you and your family ready for

everything about to happen so you don’t miss sports and activities registrations or get closed out of afterschool programs.

With the passing of Maya Angelou, renowned poet, educator and civil rights activist, her words have had a resurgence of popularity and influence. Her sentiments strike a chord in just about everyone’s heart and soul, but my personal favorites

revolve around those that spark courage and abandonment of fear. Fear holds us back from so many possibilities. Fear of failure, rejection, success, change, and dying are all handcuffs in our lives. Maya said, “The most important thing is to DARE.” So if in any small way, our publications help a reader or child to dare to discover their talents and their purpose, our mission has been successful.

Enjoy a leisurely read by the pool or on the beach and take your time to figure out some yet undiscovered talents or abilities you or your children might want to cultivate. Dance, art, rugby, basketball, softball, music, martial arts, yoga and so many more activities are right here at your fingertips...uncover these hidden abilities and put some fun into the stressful schedules our families try to juggle during the school year. And we encourage you and your family to give back to your community. Find a charitable organization where you all can volunteer, donate your old clothes and books, help feed the homeless, reach out to neighbors in need or read to the elderly. All of these little things make a big difference in others’ lives. Our Clubs & Organizations page has all of the information you need to get involved.

We are proud to announce that Lakewood Ranches & East Suncoast Publisher, Corrie Hoffman, will be launching her inaugural Sports & Activities Directory in August 2014. This will be the 7th area publication under our wing in Florida, with more areas already in the planning mode. Corrie is an active mom of three boys, former Plantation resident and loyal Sports & Activities Directory reader. Upon moving to the Manatee/Sarasota County area, she found nothing like our publication

in the area. After a few meetings and multiple trainings, Corrie dared to make the leap to become an entrepreneur and licensee of Sports &

Activities DIrectory. We are so excited to branch out to this area and know Corrie will find her new profession so much fun and intensely rewarding!

On that note, we wish all of you a relaxing remainder of the summer and a wonderful launch into the school year!

Our best to you, always,

Margot & Nicole

Every Saturday night, from sunset to midnight, people of all ages gather at Fox Observatory at Markham Park to get a closer look at the moon and stars. On a clear night, there may be as many as 10 telescopes set up. The Observatory, which is free and open to the public, remains one of Broward County’s best kept secrets.

“Visitors can see things they may not have seen in their entire lives,” said Monroe Pattillo, Director of the Observatory. “Through August, they will be able to see the ring of Saturn through the telescope.”

Members of the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association (SFAAA) operate the Observatory. They do not represent NASA or any educational institution, scientific organization or professional astronomy group. They are simply a group of people that meet on Saturday nights to share their passion for the universe with each other and anyone else who is interested.

On rainy or cloudy nights, SFAAA members provide astronomy-based presentations and videos at the Fox Observatory. On clear nights, they are available to teach visitors how to use the sophisticated telescopic equipment that is housed there. Some of it includes: a 14-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain @ F/10, a 6” Brandon Refractor, and three Dobsonian reflecting telescopes; with one as large as 13” in diameter. Both Schmidt-Cassegrains can be fitted with CCD imagers that offset the effects of light pollution. In addition, many SFAAA members bring their own telescopes.

Brian Henry brought his kids to the Observatory. They were learning about the solar system in school and he wanted them to see it first-hand. “It is incredible how much you can see with the high-powered equipment at the Observatory,” said Henry. “My kids were fascinated by the moon and had so many questions for the SFAAA volunteers. When they left, they both said they wanted to become astronomers.”

After visiting the Fox Observatory, Scott Stranahan decided to purchase his own telescope. He brought it with him on a Saturday night and the SFAAA volunteers

helped him align it. “The volunteers were so helpful,” said Stranahan. “I have learned so much from visiting the Observatory. I am excited to be able

to explore the moon from home during the week.” Founded in 1965, the SFAAA is a nonprofit organization that includes members who are new to the hobby, as well

as long time observing veterans. The club meets at 7:30pm on the first Thursday of every month. Most

meetings are open to the public; however there are some members-only events. Members share their equipment and knowledge with the general

public on Saturday nights, as well as during special group presentations at five Broward County libraries, Fern Forest Nature Center, local schools and more.

The membership fee of $20 covers the entire family and includes the SFAAA’s monthly electronic newsletter, as well as access to the “members only” area on the website. Members can participate in activities that include learning to use a telescope, video and slide shows, star parties, Astronomy Day, CCD imaging, observatory operations and special projects. In addition, SFAAA maintains a Yahoo Group where members can communicate with each other to coordinate last minute trips to local dark sky locations, exchange news, ask questions, and share experiences in astronomy.

The club’s website also provides a forum for students, teachers and the general public to “ask an amateur astronomer” a question - no matter how big or small. If SFAAA members do not know the answer, they will help find it.

The Fox Observatory is located in Markham Park, 16001 W State Rd 84, in Sunrise. Once inside the park, turn left at the 4-way stop, take the first right, and go to the end of the circle. The observatory is the flat roof building with the red lights. For information, visit www.sfaaa.com or call (954) 384-0442.

Sydney Corbin, President of Plantation Historical Society, Shirley Schuler, retired curator of the

Plantation Historical Museum, and John Feeney, current curator of the Plantation Historical Museum.

Carol Cotton and John Feeney

The City of Plantation, with the vision and leadership of the Plantation Historical Society, dedicated the Everglades Diorama and Exhibit in February 2014. Housed at the Plantation Historical Museum, this exhibit showcases an impressive diorama featuring the many faces of the Everglades.

The permanent exhibit was the vision of former Museum Curator, Shirley Schuler who passed away suddenly just weeks after the exhibit dedication. Shirley, along with other Historical Society Members, spent a year planning

the exhibition and submitting plans to the city. It took another four years of fundraising to come up with the money necessary to create this masterpiece. Fundraising included a silent auction, and donations by both private donors and civic organizations. A professional creative fi rm constructed this attractive feature that now dominates the north wall of the museum.

The diorama consists of the many ecosystems found in the Everglades including plants, animals, water, fi sh, and birds. The three-dimensional exhibit includes the magical sounds of birds such as the Belted King Fisher and the Green Heron, as well as other wild animals including the grunting sounds of the American Alligator and the distinct sound of the Green Tree Frog. Strategically placed lights illuminate life-like animals hidden behind reeds of grass or swimming beneath sawgrass marshes. With a push of a button one immediately feels as if they have been physically transported to the Everglades. The diorama takes its visitors through the various times of the day from sunrise to sunset. Detailed descriptions beneath the diorama are the perfect educational piece for visitors of all generations.

Other smaller displays throughout the museum enhance the diorama with items such as books, maps, and artifacts from the Everglades. A small display boasts of several movies that were fi lmed in the Everglades, including Miami Vice and the Gator Boys. A life-size replica of Hugh deLaussett Willoughby, one of the fi rst men to lead an expedition through the Everglades, stands in a corner of the

museum complete with camping gear and a makeshift tent.Established in 1974, The Plantation Historical Museum started as a small

museum in the back room of City Hall. In 1985, the Plantation Historical Society and the City of Plantation opened the museum in its current location behind the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library where it welcomes visitors with its character-rich brick exterior and pristine interior-perfectly maintained. Outside is the ideal place for visitors to relax amidst the shade of various species of trees. Well-kept gardens include a Butterfl y Garden, Botanical Garden and an Arboretum.

The mission of the museum is to preserve the history of the City of Plantation. In order to achieve this goal and in hopes of educating locals and visitors by “Studying the past and documenting the present for future generations,” the museum features both temporary and permanent exhibits.

Museum Curator, John Feeney is a wealth of knowledge and shared the following, “I just took over as the curator in November. I like working with the Plantation Historical Society because they work with the museum. I was happy to see their goal accomplished of creating the Everglades diorama.”

Carol Cotton, whose warm handshake welcomes guests to the museum, said of the Everglades Exhibit, “I serve on the board of the Historical Society. After all of our hard work and fundraising, it is nice that we got it done and that Shirley was able to see the diorama on dedication day. That was the last time most of us ever saw her.”

With dedicated staff and volunteers that are passionate about their jobs, the Plantation Historical Museum, with its newly dedicated Everglades Diorama and Exhibit, is a must see. If you are interested in joining the thousands of local and out of state visitors that fl ock to the museum for the Everglades Diorama and Exhibit, or to learn more about the history of Plantation, please visit 511 North Fig Tree Lane, Plantation, FL 33317 or contact John Feeney or Carol Cotton at (954) 797-2722. You will fi nd yourself experiencing an educational opportunity that will increase your knowledge and your fondness for the city of Plantation, “Your Place Under the Sun,” and its natural wonders; including the many faces of the Everglades.

The West Regional Library offers a variety of ways for kids to stay busy during the summer. They can participate in a summer reading program, join a chess club, create ceramics pieces, and much more.

When school ends, Stephanie House and her three young children typically visit the West Regional Library several days a week. “Before I discovered the library, I used to spend so much money on activities during the summer,” said House. “There is always something interesting happening at the library and most things are free. All of my kids love attending the story hours and special events. It has become like a second home for them.”

Anyone who lives, works, or attends school in Broward County is eligible to sign up for a free library card online or in the library. Cardholders have access to more than three million books, videos, cassettes, CDs, DVDs, CD ROMs, and audiobooks. They can also download books from the virtual library, which has nearly 16,000 e-book titles and 8,600 audio books that are compatible with most e-readers, laptops, desktops, and “smart” devices.

Through August 2, children of all ages can participate in the library’s summerreadingprograms - "Fizz, Boom, Read" for children and tweens and "Spark a Reaction" for teens. Participants get a special game board, which helps them track the amount of time they spend reading and offers them the chance to win incentives and prizes. The emphasis this year is on science and literacy.

The library has several weekly programs, which allow children to enjoy a story and craft. They include: BedtimeStories(all ages: Tuesdays); Fizz!Bang!Read! (ages 6-10: Wednesdays); StorytimeFun (ages 3-5: Thursdays); and Kids’Corner (ages 3-6: Thursdays).

The library offers a variety of children’s programs on Saturdays. Kids can attend WeirdScienceMovieDay, which includes popcorn and drinks (ages 6-11: July 5); create their own piece during CeramicsonWheels(ages 6-11: July 12); participate in a SingalongwithMiss

Stacey(ages 2-8: July 19); or play games and earn prizes during WackyWeatherGameDay(ages 3-10: July 26). On August 2, all ages are invited to SummerFinale:Superheroes, which features a visit from Spiderman and Batman, as well as prizes and book giveaways.

There are also several programs and activities for tweens and teens. They can participate in book discussions with kids their own ages, such as: tweenBookClub(ages 8-12: July 14);MiddleSchoolBookClub(ages 11-14: July 15), or the BookChatBookClub(ages 14-18: July 21). They can join the ChessClub(ages 5-18: July 5, 19); create dye art during tieDyeoriginals(ages 12-18: July 8) or make plaster creations during Pizza&Plaster (ages 12-18: July 12). They can also trade out the summer books they have finished during the Cinema&BookSwap(ages 12-18: July 14).

The West Regional Library is located at 8601 W. Broward Blvd. It is open Monday and Tuesday, from noon to 8pm, and Wednesday to Sunday, from 10am to 6pm. Many programs require pre-registration. For more information, call 954-765-1560.

For more than 30 years, C.B. Smith Park has been known for its waterslides, tube ride and swim lagoon. Portions of Broward County Parks and Recreation Division’s largest aquatics facility were recently closed in order to complete repairs and add four new slides. The water park is now open, and once again one of the best places in the area to cool off during the summer.

“The water park offers something for everyone,” said Brian McLaughlin, C.B. Smith Park Manager. “It is a lot of fun and one of the best deals in town. A family of four can enjoy an entire day at the park and lunch for less than the cost of a movie.”

In December 2012, the County began construction on “Paradise Pipeline” to replace the two 30+ year old slides that were installed on a 45’ high mound of dirt. Since then, the water park has been operating without any slides, limiting the water-based opportunities for older children and adults. “The old slides were beyond repair, necessitating the new construction,” said McLaughlin.

Numerous other repairs/renovations were also made at the water park, including the re-gel coating and painting of the slides at both Parrot’s Point and Sharky’s Lagoon, as well as the re-surfacing of the diamond brite in both water playgrounds and the Crazy Creek. Additionally, each of the water playgrounds received new protective netting to keep patrons from walking underneath the water slides.

Now, visitors can enjoy the following water-based activities:• ParadisePipelinefeatures four five-story-tall waterslides that vary

in length from 395 to 430 feet. More than 400 gallons of water per minute move riders through the corkscrew, until they exit into a four-foot-deep plunge pool. Riders must be 42 inches tall, weigh less than 250 pounds, and be able to swim.

• Sharky’slagoon is a water playground for all ages. It features an 18-inch-deep pool with three waterslides (83, 98, and 125 feet long) and other interactive play elements.

• Parrot’sPoint is a water playground for ages 5 and under. It features a 12-inch-deep pool with two small waterslides and many other interactive play elements.

• CrazyCreek is a 410-foot-long, meandering tube ride with interactive play elements along the route.

The water park also has fifteen – 20’ diameter “Funbrellas” (capacity 30), picnic tables, and lockers for rent. All of this makes it a great place for small events, such as birthday parties, family gatherings, summer camp groups, and more. When the crowd gets hungry, they can visit “Paradise Grill” or “Sand Dollar” for pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, soft drinks, water, sno-cones, nachos and various forms of candy.

Carolyn Sanders visited the park as a child and now brings her own kids there. “We were there the day that the new slides opened,” said Sanders. “They are a blast. I am so excited to have them so close to home.”

Paradise Cove is located inside CB Smith Park, 900 N Flamingo Road, in Pembroke Pines. During aquatics season, the water parks are open from 9:30am - 5:20pm. Admission fees are $9.50/person for all-day admission and $6.50/person after 3 p.m. Children under 1 year of age are admitted free. A season pass (Find It All card) is available for $76 per person. The park’s regular gate entrance fee of $1.50/person (children 5 and under free) is also in effect on weekends and holidays. For information, call (954) 357-5170, visit www.broward.org/parks/cbsmithpark or send an email to [email protected].

Canal FishingIf you enjoy fi shing, South Florida is the place to be. Sailfi sh, dolphin (mahi

mahi), and wahoo lure anglers offshore into the open blue. Grouper, snapper, and king mackerel prowl the wrecks and reefs scattered along the coast. Beaches, bridges, and jetties are great places to fi nd snook, tarpon, and jacks. But for consistent, kid-friendly action, nothing beats fi shing in the innumerable canals and lakes spread throughout the interior of the southern portion of the state.

Stop at any body of freshwater and you may fi nd a menagerie of fi sh species to target. Alongside the usual suspects of bluegills, spotted sunfi sh, largemouth bass, and catfi sh, you can catch exotic (non-native) spotted tilapia, Mayan cichlids, oscars, and a variety of other colorful cichlids, including one of the coolest of all freshwater fi sh, the peacock bass. In addition to these, some waters hold toothy bowfi n, gar, and snakeheads. As if that isn’t enough, saltwater species such as snook and tarpon commonly make forays into freshwater and will test your tackle with hard fi ghting and spectacular, gill-rattling jumps.

So how do you go about catching these fi sh? For panfi sh like bluegill, spotted and redear sunfi sh, tilapia, and many of the cichlids, a light spincast (push-button) or spinning rod with 4-10 lb. test fi shing line provides great fun for kids of all ages. Two go-to baits are doughballs (pinched pieces of bread) and live worms. Bait a small, light-wire hook with either bait, suspend it below a bobber, and let it sit along the bank of any canal or lake for good action on these smaller fi sh.

For the large game fi sh, like largemouth and peacock bass, snakeheads, snook, and tarpon, you can fi sh with live shiners from the tackle shop or with small panfi sh

that you catch yourself. Use a circle hook for best results and free line these baits or suspend them under a bobber; be patient and let the bait do all the work attracting the fi sh. For a more active style of fi shing, you can choose to fi sh with artifi cial lures, of which there are a variety of styles. The endless choices include soft plastic worms, frogs, lizards, or shad; surface or diving crank baits; jigs; spinner baits; and fl ies. The important thing is to learn about the fi sh you want to catch, what they like to eat, and use an appropriate lure. Carefully cast along the bank, around structures like logs, vegetation, rocks, bridges, and docks, or into deeper water and keep moving until you fi nd the fi sh. Spinning tackle from 6-12 lb. test is ideal for most any game fi sh that you might encounter in our freshwater lakes and canals. Largemouth and peacock bass will give you a great fi ght but also be prepared to occasionally tangle with the larger and much more powerful tackle busters, the snook and tarpon, which can weigh more than 25 and 100 lb. respectively! The great thing about fi shing is that you never know what you’ll catch, so grab a rod, get outside, and catch a memory!

To learn more about fi shing or to get your kids involved in the sport, look no further than the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum in Dania Beach, where family fi shing clinics, day and summer camps, and adult angling education classes are held throughout the year.

Dog parks have become a great place to socialize – for both pets and their owners. While the dogs run around, free from their leashes and safe from traffic hazards, their owners can meet other humans who live in the area.

Allison Cantor brings her Weimaraner to Barkham at Markham on most weekends. “I have been to many of the dog parks, but the one at Markham is my favorite,” said Cantor. “Blackie loves to play with the other dogs and I have met so many dog lovers there. I wish I had time to visit the park more often.”

There are a variety of dog parks located throughout Broward County. Some of them include:

Barkham at Markham16001 W. State Rd. 84, Sunrise • (954) 357-8868The 3.5-acre fenced-in dog park offers separate areas for small and large dogs to run leash-free and play on a variety of pet apparatus in the park. It has Bermuda sod, which provides a smooth and even grassy playing surface. There are also many amenities for owners, including 8-foot-wide asphalt paths for walking or jogging with pets, as well as three pavilions with plenty of benches. Two shelters feature fountains that dispense chilled water for humans, while dogs have their own fountains in designated areas. There is also an area for washing dogs of all sizes. The entire dog park is fully accessible.

Happy Tails Dog Park at Seminole Park6500 SW 16th Street, Plantation • (954) 452-2510The 5.0-acre site is home to the Plantation Canine Unit and has three distinct activity areas. There is a leash-free run and fun area for large dogs, an exercise area ideal for agility training, and an area for smaller dogs (25 pounds or less). The park features plenty of parking, restroom facilities and pavilions. It is home to a variety of canine events and activities that are held throughout the year. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted without an adult over the age of 18.

Pembroke Pines Dog Park at John S. Fahey Park 9751 Johnson St, Pembroke Pines • (954) 435-6525 The park features two separate play areas for different sized dogs. It also has agility equipment, automatic watering fountains and a wash area. There are benches, along with shade structures and trees, so that dog owners can sit and watch their pets play. It is home to the City’s Annual Bow-Wow Ween Costume Contest.

Dr. Steven G. Paul Dog Park2575 Sportsplex Drive, Coral Springs • (954) 346-4428The park features large and small dog fenced areas, agility training equipment, a watering area, a paved running path, and “pooper scooper” bag dispensers. It is part of the 182-acre Coral Springs Sportsplex. It is free and open to all well-mannered dogs and responsible owners.

Bark Park at Snyder Park3299 SW 4th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale • (954) 828-4341The park has two fenced acres with agility courses for dogs. It is open 363 days a year (closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day), from 7am to 7pm. It is closed every Thursday morning, from 8am to 11am for cleaning. Dogs can swim at Snyder Park’s East Lake every day during park hours. Dog Swim is closed on the first Tuesday and Wednesday of each month for water treatment, and on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

The Dog BeachLocated between Pershing and Custer Streets, Hollywood • (954) 921-3404On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays only, year-round, you can enjoy the afternoon at the beach with your entire family, including your dog. Purchase a six-month pass (2 dogs per permit) at the dog beach during operating hours or at the Hollywood Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Office.

DON’T SETTLE FOR ANYTHING LESS THAN 100% WITH YOUR HEALTH!

If you find yourself with unresolved health issues that cause pain, it is probably a warning signal from your body to take action. Whatareyouwaitingfor?

If your check engine light went on in your car and you chose to ignore it, it would lead to more expensive and more time-consuming repairs. Your body is no different.

At ChiropracticUSA of Plantation, Dr. Jeffrey Getbehead and Dr. Renny Edelson specialize in the diagnosis of the underlyingcause of problems. Thus, treatment options are aimed at eliminating the problem, not just providing a temporary “quick-fix”.

Unlike at many other health care offices, the doctors at ChiropracticUSA spend significant time educating every patient up-front so they not only understand their problem and the solution, but they have home therapy and exercises to continue with.

For over two decades, ChiropracticUSA has been helping people who want an alternative to medications and surgery. Dr. Jeffrey Getbehead is trained in traditional chiropractic adjusting as well as techniques that involve instrument adjusting only. The office also utilizes state-of-the-art physical therapy to help patients maintain the results they achieve.

Many people are surprised to see the diversity of patients being treated at ChiropracticUSA. Specialized treatment plans are available for children, people

involved in car accidents, athletes, and work related injuries. “Whatmakesusuniqueisoureducationsystem,

which empowers every person walking through the door to be healthier than they ever thought possible,” says Dr. Jeffrey Getbehead.

ChiropracticUSA provides customer service that you don’t expect from a physician’s office. The wellness care provider has five employees on staff that will make you feel at home when you visit. The licensed massage therapist, Antonio, also specializes in therapeutic deep-tissue massage.

Dr. Jeffrey Getbehead studied at Tulane University before attending Life University for his Doctorate in Chiropractic. He has practiced in Sweden and completed mission trips to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and El Salvador. In addition to several staff members, Dr. Getbehead speaks Spanish.

The National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP) believes every youth and caregiver deserves a chance at living successfully together in their home and community. NYAP’s KINnet program aims to provide youth and family support services to relative and non-relative caregivers in their communities. We service caregiver families with youth from birth to 18 years old and youth with special needs up to age 22. Individuals, community lead and provider agencies or anyone who may be or know a family who would benefit from support services can make referrals.

Below are just a few of the services available through the KINnet program:• Individual and family assessments

and supportive counseling• Respite services• Caregiver skill building and support

groups• Family building events• Legal assistance and referrals• Emergency/Crisis Support• Much more!

There are many different reasons why one might choose to become a Foster Parent. Perhaps you’re a recent empty nester looking to fill the void of a quiet house that used to feel more like a home. Or maybe you are aware of the 510,000 kids in foster care in the United States and feel it is time to do something rewarding while giving back to society and your community. For Aaron Lee-Dean, former foster parent turned adoptive parent, it was the love he witnessed his own parents give to their foster children when he was growing up. “I have always wanted children and was finally in a position to do it. Also, my parents were foster parents when I was growing up so I got to see first-hand how this impacts the children. My foster brothers are still in our lives today,” Aaron says.

Whatever your reason for becoming a foster parent may be, The National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP) has been providing community based, cost effective services and support to families since 1978. They offer compassionate and creative solutions to meet the specific needs of each youth and family involved in their multitude of programs. Unfortunately, many people are under the impression that there are strict guidelines for becoming a foster parent. NYAP works hard to educate the community on what the requirements to become a caregiver are and put an end to certain myths that may be associated with the program.

Here are just a few common misconceptions that could potentially cause you or someone you know to be less eager about perusing becoming a foster parent.

Myth#1: You cannot become a foster parent if you work full time. Many foster parents work full time and others are stay at home parents. It is for this reason that NYAP offers training classes at various times. They want to ensure that they are able to accommodate your busy schedule.

Myth#2: You cannot become a foster parent unless you are married. It doesn’t matter whether you have a spouse or partner. Some NYAP foster parents are married and some are single. All they ask is that you have a love for children.

Myth#3:You cannot become a foster parent if you are in a domestic partnership relationship. NYAP does not discriminate based on a person’s sexual orientation, age, color, sex, gender identity/expression, religion, national origin, marital status or disability. They believe that every parent deserves the same opportunity to open their heart and their home to a child.

Myth#4:You cannot become a foster parent unless you are a homeowner. NYAP foster parents are both home renters and homeowners.

Myth#5:You cannot become a foster parent if you do not have experience raising children. NYAP foster parents have a team of professionals available to offer guidance and support at all times. The team includes therapeutic and treatment support, clinical support, administrative support and more.

If you are considering fostering a child or children, remember that there are plenty of resources and individuals happy to share their knowledge with you. When asked what advice he would give someone considering becoming a foster parent, Aaron’s response was, “Do it!! If you have the love in your heart to share with a child, you will receive the love back tenfold. Also, do your research on the licensing agencies in your area, find the one that you feel will be able to best meet your family’s needs.” In Aaron’s case, he chose NYAP. Now he and his husband Matt are in the process of adopting a 4-year old and a 6-year old. Aaron offers the following, “I have fostered 14 children over the last 4 years and I loved each and every one as if they were my own. The love that you get from these children and the love you get to give them is the most rewarding feeling in the world. ”

For more information on how you can become a foster parent, call the National Youth Advocate Program at (954) 596-5284 or receive visit their website at www.nyap.org.

By Dr. Scott Christian, Psy.D., Licensed Psychologist

Why Am I Feeling

This Way?After a number of years of treating individuals, you can

imagine that I have been asked many different questions

about emotions. How these questions are asked can be

disguised by individual differences in thought and action,

but two basic questions consistently resurface: (1) why am

I feeling this way? and (2) How can I feel better? In this

article, Question 1 will be addressed, with Question 2 to be

addressed within the next publication.

Question 1: Why am I feeling this way?The answer to this question lies within the relationship

between emotional education, emotional management, and

psychological self-trust. More specifi cally, a misunderstanding

of our couples emotions can lead to ineffi cient, inadvertent

emotional patterns I term “emotional loitering” (holding on to

an emotion past the point of health and productivity). Follow

me through this explanative description, if you will. We tend to

get annoyed with anyone or anything that wears out its welcome,

be it a fl y, a guy, or a thumb in your eye. These tedious situations

grate on our nerves (i.e. emotions) because our mind has learned

they do not lead to promoting healthy, physical or psychological

comfort. Our response? We likely put our foot down and change

the situation to remove the “pain” and return to a healthier

state of mind and being. Emotional loitering produces similar

discomfort, the solution often seems confusing.

By design, our emotions are not meant to be “held” for too

long at any one time. Sure we can experience them for a while,

sometimes quite a while, but too long and the consequences

of enduring emotional pain and eventually mental fatigue and

exhaustion set in. At this point we likely feel helpless and

ineffective. Usually not intentional, we learn to misuse our

emotions until they betray us, which hinders adapting and

functioning purposefully, let alone happily. Consider a very

similar example dealing with sustained muscular contraction:

without adequate rest, ever-increasing physical pain leads to

physical fatigue, eventually rendering the muscle fatigued,

sometimes injured, and usually ineffective for a period of time.

As a survival strategy, avoiding physical pain (e.g. spraining

an ankle) tends to work well because we react immediately by

retracting and avoiding the activity and allowing time to rest

and recover. Almost automatically, we TRUST our pain, listen

to it, and take personal responsibility by acting appropriately

to protect our being. As such we are learning to avoid what

previously caused us harm and consequently set a boundary to

effectively avoid it.

But boy oh boy, this seems quite a bit trickier when it comes

to our emotions, doesn’t it? Unless instructed differently, and

from a very early age, we often learn about emotions passively

and somewhat “instinctually” through our environment and our

caretakers. Unfortunately many people learn to avoid emotions,

associating them with pain and avoidance, and fail to relearn

effective ways to respond and resolve them. Still, these patterns

can work for quite a while unless, just like a muscle, they

become rigid and infl exible and lose their utility, thus becoming

problematic. Before they become overwhelming, we may

unknowingly “run on an emotional sprain,” blaming someone

else for the pain while we continue to run with them draped

on our back, and then wonder why the hurt steadily worsens

until we eventually collapse in exhaustion. This metaphor is

in no way intended to trivialize emotional pain, but instead to

elucidate the need for productive change. Even if you struggle

with recognizing the ineffective pattern, it does not mean that

you can’t feel better. It simply means you haven’t quite found the

right solution yet and maybe a little help is needed. Lingering

emotional distress is remarkably avoidable with a relatively small

amount of re-education and consistent practice. In the next

issue, I will continue this article and address the second topic

by answering the question, “How can I feel better?”

For some students, math skills come easily, as do the aptitudes needed to be a successful math student: analyzing patterns, thinking logically and critically,

and solving problems. However, for others, math concepts are difficult to grasp and the

more complex they become, the more students want to give up altogether.

If your child isn’t one of the fortunate students for which math “clicks” effortlessly, it may not be possible for you to convince him or her to like math. However, you can encourage your child to appreciate math for the practical and useful life skill that it is. Here are a few tips on how to help your student appreciate math and its importance.

Pointoutmathineverydaylife. You don’t have to look too hard to find math in day-to-day life—from weather forecasting to telling time to using cell phones and computers. From the time your child is old enough to understand the basic concepts of math, highlight math being used everywhere you go.

Callattentiontomathinvariouscareers. Certainly, it’s easier to see why professionals in accounting, engineering and science need math. However, the reality is that math is a skill required by many jobs. For business owners and entrepreneurs, math is an essential part of the company’s purchasing, budgeting, finance and other functions. Those working in real estate or sales likely have monthly sales targets to meet in order to earn carefully calculated bonuses. Landscapers or architects use math skills to create scaled

drawings and to calculate and order the right amount of supplies. Usemoney. Your child might not enjoy worksheets of math problems,

but there’s a good chance he or she is interested in money—or at least interested in earning money. Help your child open his or her first bank account and teach him or her how to maintain the savings register. Together, calculate how much interest he or she could earn each month based on the account’s interest rate. Put together a spreadsheet that gives your child a weekly savings goal to save up for that iPad.

Discussyourownrelationshipwithmath. Does your child see you using math? Be sure to explain how and where you use math in your daily life. If you maintain the family budget, have your child help you with this task so he or she gets a sense of how your family keeps track of your income, expenses, savings and more. Show your child how you use math in cooking and when comparison shopping.

Your child might never feel enthusiastic about math, but with some effort on your part, you can impart in him or her an appreciation for the importance of the subject. Look around and you will find a multitude of opportunities to show your child math in use—from complex math to everyday math.

Keep in mind that math is a subject that requires students to continually build skills. If your child struggles with basic concepts, more complex math will only prove frustrating. If your child is struggling, call Huntington. We can design a customized program to help your child overcome any problems with math and get back on the road to school success.

Helping Your Child Learn Math by Eileen and Raymond Huntington offers tips, strategies and activities to help your child learn math at home and on the go.

EVERY CHILD REACHING THEIR HIGHEST POTENTIAL

That is the mission which every Broward County Public School is focused on achieving! As

the parent of three children in elementary and middle school, with different strengths and interests, I understand how important it is that we provide our students with diverse opportunities which help them to be motivated to apply themselves and reach their individual, highest potential.

This year Broward County Public Schools is offering opportunities that we haven’t seen before. For the very fi rst time, over 90% of our elementary schools will be offering the First Move Chess program to our 2nd and 3rd grade classes. Each student will receive lessons in how to play chess, receive a free chess set and be given the opportunity to participate in chess competitions.

Additionally, schools will be continuing to implement the Digital 5 program in which approximately 3,200 fi fth grade students from 27 elementary schools across the District receive personalized learning utilizing laptops, digital resources, and online instructional materials. Code.org, which selected Broward as the only school district in Florida to participate in their unique program, was fi rst instituted in our elementary through high schools in the 2013-2014 school year. Continuing our partnership with Code.org provides expanded computer science programming instruction throughout students’ educational experience allowing them to garner a competitive edge among their peers for high-demand and high-salary computing professions. This is critical as, in the year 2020, it is estimated that there will be one million more computer

science jobs than computer science students. On the heels of Broward County Public Schools being awarded the national

District Sustainability Award and 48 of our schools being honored with Green Ribbons from the U.S. Department of Education, students are being awarded an ever-expanding opportunity to increase Eco-Awareness through expanded recycling programs, community gardens and energy conversation initiatives. The School Board is making a considerable investment in the Arts throughout the 2014-2015 school year. The District is currently purchasing new and repairing existing musical instruments while also supporting its drama programs through the purchase of staging equipment, lighting and sound equipment and other capital improvements which will allow our students to flourish in their personal development through exposure to the Arts. Expanded sporting programs, at the middle school level, further allows us to reach each child by tapping into the activities which they are passionate about and motivate them which will result in their further engagement in success in-and-out of the classroom.

I hope you will join us for the upcoming Broward County Public School’s 3rd Annual Ed Talk discussions that are focused on shaping the District’s priorities, which allow us to continue to strive for the highest-quality school system for our Broward County children. Visit www.browardschools.com to fi nd the location and time for the Ed Talk event that will occur this Fall. Our entire community must be engaged to ensure that we attain our goal of allowing every child to reach their highest potential!

CULPEPPER FOUNDATION AWARDS TWO FELLOWSHIPSBy Dr. Alyce Culpepper, Executive Director

For the 17th year, the executive board of the Culpepper Journalism Foundation rewards high school students with fellowships for summer journalism study.

Jack Levy and Marissa Steinberg, both on the newspaper staff at South Plantation High School, will attend the 2014 Summer Journalism Institute at the University of Florida in June. They are required to return to their high school staffs and be mentors to their classmates for 2014-2015. Each will receive $695 to cover their SJI tuition. “Attending the summer program at UF will allow me to disseminate information to our staff so we can strengthen our culture and become the best school paper in the state,” Levy said. As a junior, Levy is Entertainment Editor of the Sword and Shield. He explained that he wants to expand the readership of the paper, to create layouts that entice students to read, and to have the paper known for its outstanding quality. At the 2014 Florida Scholastic Press Association’s Spring Digital Contest, he won an Excellent rating for his Entertainment Page Design and an Honorable Mention for his review.

In addition to he journalism work, he is a member of the cross country, track and lacross teams. “Being an athlete has helped me in my sportswriting,” he said. “I understand how the players feel after a nail-biting loss or after a blowout win, which helps me capture the emotion of the game, the anger of the athlete or the elation of the coach.”

News Editor Marissa Steinberg is a sophomore. She said

she wants “to improve my writing, especially of news stories, and return to teach my peers what I have learned to improve our paper.” She received an Honorable Mention for her Profi le Feature story in the FSPA Digital Contest and she continues to enter writing contests and even submitted a proposal for a TV show to Cosmopolitan.

Over the years, the CJF has assisted 75 students from 20 different Broward County public schools who wanted to continue their journalism work during the summer. For more information contact the CJF at [email protected] or visit the CJF website at www.CulpepperJournalismFoundation.Weebly.com. The Broward Education Foundation, an arm of the School Board of Broward County, Florida, manages the CJF funds.

SENIORS APPLYING TO COLLEGE: You Need a Plan!

If you are a high school senior or the parent of a high school senior, you probably are already being inundated by the ongoing barrage of questions from well-meaning peers, family members, and teachers about applying to college and what you have and have not done. No one ever said applying to college is effortless and stress-free, but it can be manageable with a plan of action. The best response to the ongoing questions is to be organized. Below I have outlined ten things to help you and your child stay on track.

1. In early August, register for an additional ACT and SAT. 2. Have your child ask themselves this key question: What does my social media

information say about me? Any material that not does show oneself in a positive light should be erased immediately.

3. Start the personal essay early. This is the place where a student can showcase their voice and let the college admission representatives understand their passion, growth, and real self. Do not forget to proofread before submitting.

4. Stay on top of deadlines for the application, as well as for scholarships. There are times when a college application has to be submitted earlier than the regular deadline to qualify for certain scholarships.

5. Know the requirements for each college. A great way to keep track of this is with a spreadsheet detailing deadlines and information required, such as; transcript, letters of recommendation, supplemental essays, resume, etc.

6. The high school senior is responsible for sending their official test scores from the testing agency to colleges, not the college counselor. Do not forget this piece of the process.

7. Senior year is still important academically. When a senior is accepted to a college or receives a scholarship, it is conditional. Colleges and

universities have the right to rescind a decision if the accepted student does not have the same academic standing as when they were accepted. Seniors, bottom line...do not lose focus as the year progresses. The road may seem long at times, but hang in there, you have made it this far.

8. Once you have applied to the colleges of choice, do not forget to check your e-mail and online portals for updates. No system is perfect and documents can go missing, which means it is important to always check and follow-up in a timely manner.

9. Keep an open mind. Apply to a variety of schools where you would be happy for the next four years, as scholarship and financial aid will vary. Find the right fit school for you by truly researching the opportunities present for you to succeed in and out of the classroom.

10. Start EARLY. Summer break before the senior year is the ideal time to work on essays, prep a bit more for the standardized exams, and finalize your plan of action.

Seniors, never be afraid to show your passion and be confident. Start early and plan ahead and you will surely decrease the stress level and be ready to answer the many questions that come your way about the future.

Each year, the principal at Plantation Park Elementary School challenges her students during the “Principal’s Reading Challenge.” Administrators do all kinds of crazy things to get students to read,” Ms. Gittleman, school principal, says. In the past, she has been wrapped up like a mummy in cheesecloth, dressed in an owl costume (their school mascot), been transformed into a live ice-cream sundae, raced her AP with the corvette club, rocked out with a rock band and got attacked with mass amounts of silly string. This year, students had the pleasure of watching their principal be bold enough to kiss an alligator, as the theme was “Wild About Reading!”

At the assembly, the South Plantation High School Horticulture class and the Sign Language club assisted with the assemblies. The Horticulture class brought a snake, a pygmy goat, two exotic birds and the star of the show, the alligator. The students told interesting facts about

each animal. The Sign Language club taught the students two songs about reading in sign language. The lyrics were slightly different but both songs were modern pop singles that the kids were familiar with.

Over 90% of the student body in Pre-K through 5th grade participated. The top reader was 4th grader, Jacob Escobar. He joined the other top readers in each grade for a special lunch with the school’s administration and reading coach. Classes with 100% participation also got to see their teachers participate as official greeters at Family Night at McDonald’s back in May.

“As educators, we all hope that students find the books that will pull them into reading and keep them interested in literacy. The more they read, the greater the chance they will fall in love with reading. The challenge itself encourages children to turn off the television and read,” says Ms. Gittelman.

F lorida Agriculture in the Classroom selected Pamela Krauss from South Plantation as the high school winner of the 2013 Excellence in Teaching about Agriculture Award (EITAA). She is the Magnet Coordinator of the Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration magnet.

As the only teacher in Broward County currently teaching a botany class, she focuses on an Agrocology point of view and her classroom door opens into a garden. “Students, most of whom have never touched soil or set foot on a farm, learn how to prepare soil, germinate seeds, fertilize, irrigate and grow crops on a small, garden scale,” she said. “We use Florida Ag in the Classroom modules and materials (Life from the Land, Growing a Nation, Project Food, Land, and People).”

Krauss supplements her classroom work by bringing in agriculture guest speakers: beekeepers, local farmers and an executive from U.S. Sugar. She takes students on an agriculture fi eld trip to U.S. Sugar, annually as all magnet students study agriculture from an economic view in the freshman Everglades research class. She receives grants to fund her projects and trips.

“They are learning STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) through hands-on gardening,” she said. Her students have designed and run a solar powered, rain barrel irrigation system, created garden plots refl ecting the interests and cultural diversity of our students (medicinal, Caribbean, etc.) They have a heritage garden representing economically and historically important

plants in the area.In her 10-year teaching career at South Plantation,

Krauss has won numerous honors: State of Florida Governor’s Serve to Preserve Award, Teacher Winner (2010), Classroom Finalist (2009); Fairchild Exemplary Educator (2010), Environmental Teacher Role Model (2008), City of Plantation, PLANT Award (2009); and Broward County Environmental Educator of Year. Her students have won the Fairchild Challenge, a regional multi-disciplinary environmental competition for fi ve consecutive years.

In March, the Broward County Environmental and Growth Management Department honored her with an Emerald Award for her students’ creation and maintenance of the Hardwood Hammock at Jack Carter Harmony Park in Plantation that serves as a living, learning laboratory for everyone.

In the community, Krauss models what she teaches her students. She has been appointed to the City of Plantation Landscape Review Board by three different city council members, and is an active member of Plantation’s Shade Brigade (local city group that promotes green awareness/horticulture). As a member of the Florida Bar, she is a member of the Florida Bar Environmental and Land Use Section, and Florida Native Plant Society.

For her award, Florida Agriculture in the Classroom provides an all-expense paid trip in June to the National Ag in the Classroom Convention held in Minneapolis, and a $250 honorarium.

The Sagemont School embraces the arts and has built a home to nurture the talents of its students and community! The Sagemont School is proud to announce the completion and grand opening of their 10,000 square foot Visual & Performing Arts Center this August. The state-of-the art facility has been in the planning since January 2013 and will consist of two music rooms, two art rooms, and a Blackbox Theater that will accommodate an audience of up to 150 people with flexible seating.

When most public schools are not able to find funding for the arts, The Sagemont School is finding ways to boost education in the arts. “Over 80 percent for our student population participates in the arts. We find that the students grow in numerous ways by branching out into “Right Brain” thinking processes,” said Gayle Iacono, Principal at the Upper School Campus. “There is so much to be gained by participating in the arts. The arts require many important life skills including dedication, multiple motor skills, discipline, courage, self-esteem and team work,” she continued.

The student body at Sagemont has been no stranger education in the arts, to the arts education, and this new facility will cultivate even more opportunities to advance their talents and likely draw in even more talented students from the surrounding community. Recently, Sagemont students were honored with several South Florida Cappies nominations. Angel Martinez received South Florida Cappies nominations for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for her performance as Jo March in “Little Women.” The role was a milestone for Angel, who has participated in The Sagemont School theatre program since the 4th grade! Maria Moncaliano won the Cappie for Senior Critic for her outstanding journalism as a student theatre critic. Bailey Jones and her crew, which included Tyler Jones, Rebecca Jordan, Daniel Entenberg, and Marcella Vargas, received a nomination for Best Props for the production of “Little Women.” Sagemont’s Junior Thespians Troupe competed at the State competition and brought home a total 3 Superiors and 6

Excellents! 6th grade student Zachary Dishinger received the Best of Show award for his Solo Musical Performance.

In addition to the many awards in theater, Sagemont students also participate in their own arts showcase where all of the arts programs are featured and recognized. Sagemont is planning a family Gala Grand Opening Event on November 15th that will take the form of an Upper School Campus Visual & Performing Arts Festival. The event will include dramatic vignettes presented in the black box theater, musical pieces performed in several venues, a Rock Band performance & Art Walk. The community will be enlisted for support to include food tastings & more.

With the new facility will come new and more advanced programs in music, theater and art. “It is our goal to provide students with a well-rounded learning environment that is enriched through exposure to visual and performing arts. Sagemont’s visual and performing arts programs offer learning opportunities for the novice, advanced, and competitive student,” said Principal Iacono. The Drama Instructor, Elizabeth Garrard, will incorporate much more behind the scenes production instruction now that they will have our own theater to work with during classroom hours. In addition to the facility being of use to the students, they are planning to rent space to community theater groups on weekend and the summer when not in use.

The Sagemont School’s Visual Arts & Performing Arts Center will be located on the Upper School Campus at 2585 Glades Circle in Weston. For more information about The Sagemont School’s Visual & Performing A r t s Cen t e r, a r t s programs and theater rental, please vis i t www.sagemont.com or call (954) 389-2454.

Several talented musicians have graduated from Temple Dor Dorim: Jake Miller, Katie Cohen (Katie Steele), and Samantha Varrone, are just a few of the students that have benefited from TDD’s emphasis on the Arts. The early exposure to music at TDD helped create in them the knowledge and passion for music that has allowed them to have a positive impact on the music world.

Temple Dor Dorim just celebrated its 15th year. Eight of its staff members are original staff from TDD’s inaugural year and were honored at a recent celebration. Several of those staff members have children who attend, or have attended, Temple Dor Dorim. TDD’s first graduates are now finishing their freshman year of college.

Temple Dor Dorim is dedicated to the continuity of the Jewish people and to the intellectual, emotional, social, creative, physical, and spiritual growth of each child. The Visiting Musicians Program is just one of tools that the school uses to enhance the educational experience. For more information about Temple Dor Dorim, visit 2360 Glades Circle, Weston, Florida, view their website at www.dordorim.org, or call (954) 389-1232. To find out more about the Visiting Musicians Program offered by Weston Philharmonics, please visit their website at www.westonphilharmonic.org or call (954) 816-8598.

Temple Dor Dorim values the Arts. Temple Dor Dorim’s Early Childhood Center welcomed the Visiting Musicians Program, hosted by the Weston Philharmonic Society, on April 3rd. This program has been a part of the TDD Early Childhood Education for six years and will continue to be a valued and important component of the Center for generations to come.

William Stuart from the Weston Philharmonic’s was the visiting musician on April 3rd. He taught the children about the origin of many different drums and their sounds. This was just one in a series of visiting musicians. Along with listening to various instruments, the children have the opportunity to touch and to play the instruments.

Jodi Cohen, MS. Ed, Director of the Jewish school, shares her thoughts on the arts, “Our school slogan states that TDD is on a mission to Nurture and Nourish Young Minds. We know that the most rapid form of brain growth occurs between the ages from birth to three years old. As a school, we make sure to take advantage of this opportunity to expose the children to all types of experiences that stimulate their five senses. One of these ways is through musical expression. While many schools are cutting the arts, we are adding them. We feel it is a tremendous missed opportunity if we don’t take advantage of how much a child can absorb at this stage of development. Music stimulates both the mind and creativity-important components socially, emotionally, and academically. We believe in a well-rounded program that emphasizes the fine arts as much as the academic.”

Students from ages 12 months through five years old are exposed to the Visiting Musicians Program. Beginning in 2015, infants as young as three months will be added to the program. Exposing infants to music not only soothes them but also helps with overall literacy.

I walked into my son’s room the other day and stepping over the piles that in my teenager’s room seemed to multiply like gremlins that had been

watered, I couldn’t help but notice tucked into the far corner of the room Jeff’s backpack from the last

day of school. It had sat there, frozen in time, untouched and unpacked like a permanent fixture since the very first day of summer break.

It was only the end of June and in my mind summer was just beginning, but in reality I knew it was already flying by...camp was well underway, we had already taken one of our weeks of summer vacation and the movies that were soon to be released “this coming summer” were already a few weeks old in the theater. I looked down at my arms and realized my base tan was well underway.

I had a flashback to last summer and felt a bout of deja vu. Hadn’t I been here before? The slouched over backpack thrown to the side without a second thought seemed oddly familiar. Back to school anxiety suddenly swirled around me like a flash mob in my mind. The thoughts of long lines at Office Depot, the search for the acceptable backpack or lunchbox and the multiple trips to Target came rushing in like the crowd at Sawgrass Mall at Midnight on Thanksgiving. Between my three children there would be 15-20

bits of different colored papers listing requested items from teachers of which my odds for winning the lottery were greater than my chances of finding.

If we thought about it as parents each one of the things we do to get our children ready for school isn’t overwhelming. It’s the 72-hour mad dash before school opens that’s overwhelming. It was then and there that I made a conscious decision. Last summer I had looked away for the backpack that stared at me from the corner, but this year I was going to stare right back. Oh yeah. That’s right. A full head-on, who would blink first staring contest. I was determined to win. Time to dust off the backpack and show ‘em who’s boss.

Only it wasn’t that easy. How could I be thinking No. 2 pencils and neon dry erase markers when I was still thinking bathing suits and towels? My mind was still on frozen drinks and summer bar-b-ques, not on searching for calculators that exceeded NASA scientist requirements. My toes were still in sand, eyes on ocean, not on the prettiest patterned tissue box my daughter would want me to send in on the first day of school...but I was determined.

This year I vowed to be back to school ready. I encourage you to do the same. I know, I’d rather live in that pretty little world called summer, too....non rushed days, and poolside with the kids late afternoons, but revel in the feeling of the 72...the 3 days before school when they’ll all be rushing and you’ll be savoring the last few delicious days of summer.

VPK, which is short for Voluntary Prekindergarten program, was approved by the Florida Legislation in January 2005. The legislation recognized that investing in early education is the fi rst step toward developing successful students. VPK is free to all four year olds born on or before September 1 each year who reside in Florida.

Last school year, the program served over 16,000 four year olds in Florida. From a provider point of view, the program has been successful with their mission to provide manageable classroom sizes, approve age appropriate curricula with a strong emphasis on early literacy and to monitor qualifi ed instructors. Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) is another step toward improving the education system in Florida. Speaking as a parent who took advantage of VPK, the program has met its goals.

Parents like myself who had their children partake in the program to instill positive future school routine, the outcome was positive. However as an owner/director of a preschool in Plantation, operating since 2000 and providing VPK to over 300 preschoolers, I do come across families that have had negative outcomes. When a family doesn’t use VPK the way it was intended and designed, it can actually create poor learning habits. Instead of developing ‘early learners’, the reverse may occur, meaning families may be at risk of creating poor school habits and routines.

VPK will provide 540 hours of instructional time the year prior to a child entering kindergarten. These instruction hours will help children prepare for kindergarten. Your child will be receiving pre-math, pre-science and pre-reading lessons. They will also develop language and social skills. Another equally important benefit to the program is turning an experience that most children view as a negative one, leaving their parent, into a positive experience. I am referring to being dropped off by their parent/guardian at an unfamiliar place with a complete stranger (AKA the teacher). At fi rst, a young child can see this experience as a form of abandonment. Some of their early thoughts are “why does Mommy not want to be with me?” The early education teacher’s job is to reassure them that “Mommy” will be back. The teacher must change their focus from being apart from their

caregiver to being excited to learn new things, playing with new toys, making new friends and to make great early childhood memories. It always brings me great joy when I visit the local elementary, middle and high schools and I see friendships that were developed in my early learning center.

VPK is not a program designed to be a daycare service with no regard to attendance, punctuality and involvement with a child’s early education. Attending the program daily with enthusiasm sends a positive message to your child as a future student. During early childhood, children are learning and developing character traits through modeling their fi rst educator; you, the parent. Parents need to set a schedule at home that involves a bedtime routine, which gives their young bodies and minds plenty of rest. The children need to know that attending school is not optional and being punctual is just as important as attending and coming prepared to learn.

We know as parents know that our commitment to our children’s education does not end after you enroll in VPK by visiting www.vpkfl orida.org and picking the right school. The journey begins with VPK and setting good school habits that will be used for the rest of their educational years. Year after year as a provider I see the direct correlation between high assessments and outstanding test scores with good attendance. Take advantage of the program in every way, by having your child complete the entire program daily with enthusiasm. The benefi ts for your child will be noticed as they grow in their educational years.

Tucked away in the heart of Weston is a gem that needs discovering. Weston Christian Academy was established in 1995 and is located on the beautiful tree-lined campus of the First Baptist Church of Weston. This impressive academy offers a diverse educational experience that rivals larger private schools.

Weston Christian Academy partners with the home and church to foster excellence in each student while developing spiritual leaders who are fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges (SACS) and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), WCA is the perfect choice for your children’s education. The school accepts 3-year-old preschool students through the 8th grade and offers a diverse and comprehensive educational program including a heavy emphasis on the arts.

Core classes include: Arithmetic, Reading and Writing with a strong emphasis in grammar and the reading of classical novels. Other classes offered are: Science, History, Logic, Speech & Debate, Etiquette, Music, Computer Technology, Musical Theatre, Drama, Physical Education and Art. Unlike most American schools, WCA offers both Spanish and Latin at young ages. Spanish is introduced in preschool and is continued through the eighth grade. An emphasis on Spanish helps prepare WCA’s eighth graders for their annual mission trip to the Dominican Republic with SCORE International, a non-profit ministry organization. Latin is strategically introduced in the 3rd grade as a part of a Classical Curriculum that has been shown to increase reading comprehension and test scores.

WCA offers the highly successful Singapore Math Program providing a strong focus on mental math. Singapore is one of the leading international curriculums in arithmetic and WCA recognizes the benefit of adopting this form of teaching. Three math tracks are offered in Middle School including: Regular, Advanced, and GEM Honors Math. Ambitious students can enter high school with several high school credits including Physical Science, Algebra 1 Honors, Geometry Honors, Spanish 1 and Web Design.

WCA competes in several competitions annually including: Science Fair, History Fair, Art Festivals, Spelling Bee, Creative Writing, Speech Meet, Math Olympics and Drama. During the 2013-2014 school year WCA had several students receive first place medals for their outstanding academic and artistic abilities. For the many International students that grace the campus of WCA, the school offers ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) training. This training is monumental in helping these students gain the proficiency necessary to succeed in an English Speaking Culture.

For the athletically inclined, a wide variety of sports are available including: flag football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and tennis for the boys; and volleyball, softball, basketball, cheerleading, and tennis for the girls. The church Worship Center is converted

to a full-sized basketball and volleyball court where the Weston Christian Academy Eagles compete in many athletic events.

For the musically inclined, there are many opportunities to discover hidden talents through both school music classes and private lessons. Students as young as preschool study music theory while exploring various musical instruments. Students in the 6th through 8th grade can choose from Praise Band, Chorus, Concert Band or Orchestra.

Patricia Del Pozo, Director of Admissions and Marketing, says the following about Weston Christian Academy, “We have an advanced curriculum and leading edge technology, yet we are able to offer a special, smaller-school feel. We care about our parents and are able to give them the one-on-one attention that they require. We offer everything a larger school offers in a smaller class setting.”

If you would like a tour of WCA or are interested in finding out more information about this dynamic Christian School, please visit their website at www.westonchristianacademy.org, visit them at 1420 Indian Trace, or contact the office at (954) 349-9224. You will be very impressed by what this hidden treasure in the heart of Weston has to offer!

It was Spring Break and nothing extraordinary had been planned. Admittedly I wasn’t pleased with myself and still feel sort of embarrassed to be sharing that tidbit. There I was staring at a week ahead, three sets of wondering eyes staring back at me...for the next 7 days and 84 hours to be exact. I calculated that based on needing something for the kids to do 12 of the 24 hours they were awake each day. Trying to salvage my worthiness and nomination for parent of the year award, I rationalized that at least 12 hours of each day had a plan. After all, don’t children need a certain amount of sleep each night? And so that’s how Spring Break started with sleep as the only plan.

That week we did nothing out of the ordinary. We went to the beach one day. We stopped at a farmer’s market. We buried a turtle. We went to the park a lot and we discovered things about the lake outside our patio door. The week fl ew by with activities that were nothing extraordinary and everything ordinary about them. What ended up happening though, was no ordinary week.

The day we went to the beach, we weren’t rushed to get home to backpacks or dinner to make. We ended up staying there longer than we ever did with no birthday party to get to or chores to be done. My kids, all different ages, kept busy with each other walking along the sand at a snail’s pace looking at treasures they discovered. Treasures they had passed by and never noticed dozens of times along the shoreline before. I watched as my little one squealed with excitement when her brothers would discover another odd shaped shell, a piece of coral or a spiny jellyfi sh.

We had been to the farmer’s market before, but that Spring Break week we went because we had time to kill, so I meandered. While I was oohing and aahing and feeling the produce for freshness and ripeness, the owner of the the market Josh was shouting out about his local favorites, and as he described the fruits as luscious, juicy, unbelievable and succulent, it lured my kids under his spell. For the fi rst time ever, they were mesmerized by the draw of the featured fruit he held in his hand and the samples he gave out. Blood orange, pomegranate, dates...fruits they had passed by many times before but never tried, they now were truly enjoying as was evident in their juice-soaked faces.

Later that week my daughter’s pet turtle died. Where fi sh had been fl ushed before and replaced without missing a beat, this time we held a pet funeral

complete with eulogies, moments of silence and actual tears shed. I’m not sure if the tears were shed for the turtle or for understanding maybe for the fi rst time what the pain of loss feels like.

And so the week went like that. My children found wonder in the ordinary. They marveled at ordinary life, everyday things that had surrounded them but hadn’t really been appreciated before. Little did I know when Spring Break had started out that week that I was going to be teaching my children a way of looking at their world that I now hoped would stay with them for a lifetime. As a parent and as an adult, I learned a valuable lesson to pass on...when we make the ordinary come alive for our children, the extraordinary will take care of itself.

MARVEL AT ThE ORDINARY

By Jodi Cohen, MS.Ed; Early Childhood Center Director; Temple Dorim

The South Plantation High School Softball team, led by head coach, Robyn Handler, experienced their best season in over fi fteen years. With 15 wins and 8 losses, 2014 was a record-breaking year.

When asked what contributed to their success, coach Handler said, “It was defi nitely one of the best teams in ten years with increased talent in one of the toughest districts. We didn’t beat the big dogs but we beat a couple of others along the way. Our strong pitching, good defense, and power hitters contributed to our success.”

Handler emphasized that a lot of her players have the talent and ability to play at the collegiate level. With just two players graduating this year, the SPHS Softball Team will remain much the same. With 2010 being the last time the team made it to Regionals, Coach Handler has her eyes set on winning the big games and making it to Regionals in 2015 with the help of senior leadership. One of those incoming seniors will be Jessica Trana who completed her junior year with a single season record of seven home runs and a career record of ten home runs. Jessica, who has been playing for ten years, spent a lot of time working on her outside pitch this season, which clearly paid off.

When describing how it feels to hit a home run, Jessica shared the following, “When you hit the ball it feels effortless. When you see it go over the fence it’s a beautiful feeling.” As far as what motivates Jessica, “I

want to play in college and the better I play now, the more prepared I will be to play at the university level. I hope to get a scholarship.”

Another stand-out player is sophomore, Emma Maitland, who had 154 strike outs when an average would be 72-100. Emma broke the single season strike-out record in far less games than prior SPHS players. “She learned to focus and deal with adversity,” said Handler.

Emma, who has only played softball for four years, made a distinction between noise that bothers her and noise that motivates her. “My ability to concentrate depends on the noise. If it’s the other team trying to distract me, I block it out. If it’s my coaches or parents motivating me then I try to take it in. When others are counting on me I use it to motivate myself.” When asked about her success, Emma said, “I could not have done it without my team. It’s not possible without all of the players.”

Coach Handler, who has been coaching softball for over 20 years, with the past 10 years spent coaching at SPHS, shared that every year the team has a new slogan. Next year’s slogan is “We need to learn how to adjust so we can get the big wins.” The South Plantation High School Paladins are gearing up for another successful season and with the combined talents and efforts of both the players and their coaches, the Paladins might just have another record-breaking year!

During the Ultimate Software Green City Challenge, approximately 150 elementary, middle and high school students had an opportunity to search for solutions to real world problems. They recently met at Cypress Bay High School to showcase the Lego Mindstorms® robots they built and programmed to solve challenges related to renewable energy. They also presented ways to address some of Weston’s environmental issues.

“By the year 2020, it is estimated that there will be one million more computer science jobs than students entering the field,” said Lisa V. Milenkovic, STEM Supervisor, STEM and Instructional Resources for Broward County Public Schools. “We need to expose students to computer programming and computer science at a younger age. These children can change the world if they have the proper skills.”

At the beginning of the 2013/14 school year, Ultimate Software donated funds to Broward County Public Schools STEM & Instructional Resources Department to purchase Lego Mindstorms® robots for all of the schools in the Cypress Bay Zone, including Country Isles Elementary, Manatee Bay Elementary, Gator Run Elementary, Eagle Point Elementary, Indian Trace Elementary, Everglades Elementary, Tequesta Trace Middle, Falcon Cove Middle and Cypress Bay High.

“South Florida produces a lot of highly qualified students, but many feel they have to go to Silicon Valley to find jobs,” said Greg Miller, Director of Engineering Talent for Ultimate Software, which is located in Weston. “We want them to know that there are top tier technology companies throughout South Florida, including right here in Weston.”

The challenge involved two parts. After researching and discussing environmental issues in Weston, they developed presentations with solutions. They also attempted to build and program robots to solve seven missions, including: activating a wind turbine, placing a solar panel, avoiding the flower lady, sorting the trash, closing the dam, deploying a new smokestack, and energizing the Green City. Cypress Bay’s computer science and robotics students volunteered at the elementary schools to help mentor them with their projects.

Students in the Robotics Club at Indian Trace Elementary were able to program the robot to perform several tasks. “The students enjoy building with Legos, but this took it to the next level,” said Amy Winder, principal. For the environmental challenge, a group of fourth grade students created a prototype of a bus that runs on water to address traffic pollution in the city. “The students had to think about problems in our city that they could be involved in solving. It gave them a greater awareness of the environment and the role that we play in keeping it healthy.” Winder says that the project was challenging for both the student and adult participants and an incredible learning experience for all of them.

At Manatee Bay Elementary, two teams of students worked together on the robotics challenges and completed most of them. “In the work force, one needs to learn how to work together to solve a common problem,” said Lisa Weingartner, 5th grade teacher. “This challenge gave them the opportunity to learn how this is done in a positive way.” Two teams also participated in the Green City Challenge. They came up with alternatives for current fertilizers, as well as a way to prevent arsenic in wood roofs from running off into the ground after it rains. “The students did get frustrated at times, but they persevered and celebrated their successes as they completed the challenges.”

Twenty-three students from Gator Run Elementary participated in the project. “Students need to learn how to think critically and working with robotics gives them a chance to do just that in a fun and challenging atmosphere,” said Susan Beren, Science Resource Teacher. “Each mission required many hours of trial and error, measuring distances and calculations. We assigned job duties and everyone knew what was expected. We had builders, researchers, and programmers. It was wonderful to see how well they worked as a team.”

“It was inspiring to see how the students applied their newly learned skills to the Green initiatives,” said Miller. “We hope to repeat the Challenge next year.”

It feels like just yesterday I was speaking at graduation ceremonies wishing the class of 2014 all the best. It won’t be long before my own little girls

walk across the graduation stage with big smiles and even bigger dreams. As a parent, we all want to give our children the

best. Great public schools give our students the opportunity to dream. It’s why I began my career as a special education teacher. It’s why I ran for office and it’s why I serve the students of Broward County.

I am so proud of Broward County Public Schools and I think you should be, too. Last year 13 of our high schools ranked among the best in the nation and state by US News & World Report. 92% of our high schools received an “A” or “B” rating from the state. We were #1 in the state for the number of high school students earning Advanced Placement Awards, Honors and Distinctions.

Our mission at Broward County Public Schools is to educate today’s students to succeed in tomorrow’s world. A world where computer science is a top paying college degree and computer programming jobs are growing at two-times the national average. Last year, we announced a District partnership with Code.org. For the upcoming school year, 22 of our middle schools will be integrating

computer science into math and science classes and 15 of our high schools will offer a new computer science course. We have expanded our robotics curriculum and extracurricular programs. Our students have participated in local, regional and world robotics competitions. We are expanding our Digital 5, personalized 1 to 1 learning program to 25 more elementary schools. We have six new STEM Museum Magnet Elementary Schools and are continuing to expand our SECME STEM Olympiad. These are great achievements that will prepare our students to succeed in tomorrow’s world.

I am proud to be a Broward County Public School parent and to send my girls to one of the best school districts in America. Districts across our state have tightened their budgets. Last year we were recognized for having the lowest administrative cost in the state, meaning Broward Schools spends a larger percentage of our budget in the classroom compared to our counterparts.

I believe in public education and I believe that each child should be given every opportunity possible to achieve their dreams. Education is a great equalizer and great schools build great communities. I believe in the potential of our students.
