Mrs. Chaves is an adjunct professor with the Horticulture Department at NVCC and has taught horticulture classes through the LCPS Adult Education program. She studied architecture at Cornell University and Virginia Tech and has a BS and MS in Horticulture from Virginia Tech. She recently completed a graduate Certificate in ISTEM (Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) from Virginia Tech. Having worked in the horticulture industry for over fifteen years, she is also a landscape designer and horticultural consultant. Mrs. Chaves is certified through the Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association, is a Certified Greenhouse Operator through the Virginia Flower Growers’ Association and holds a VA Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License. Student Organization The National FFA Organization was organized as the “Future Farmers of America” in 1928 in Kansas City, Mo. Today the FFA encompasses more than 300 careers in everything from agriscience to biotechnology to turf grass management. FFA operates on local, state and national levels. Student members belong to chapters organized at the local school level. Agricultural education instructors serve as chapter advisors. States conduct programs and host annual conventions.

This intensive course focuses on the science and art of studying, experimenting on, growing and maintaining ornamental plants. Students cover topics such as plant physiology and morphology; plant reproduction and production; genetic engineering; floriculture; environmentally responsible landscape design and sustainability; greenhouse systems management; urban forestry; natural resource management; and aquaponics.

Students have the opportunity to receive certification through the Virginia Flower Growers Association, The Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association, and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services after passing these industry exams.

There are labs both on and off campus for each component of the course and students are involved with many professors, government and industry professionals during the academic year.
