For many years he taught plant anatomy and is a firm believer that students learn best if given the opportunity to prepare microscope slides themselves. He is an internationally recognized expert on plant anatomy and in 2014 published Preparing Plant Tissues for Light Microscopic Studies: A Compendium of Simple Techniques (Missouri Botanical Garden Press). Robbin Moran ([email protected]) is the Nathaniel Lord Britton Curator of Botany at The New York Botanical Garden. He has published four books and over 120 scientific papers on ferns. With Alice Tryon, he has written the Ferns and Allied Plants of New England (1997) and with Barbara Joe Hoshizaki, the Fern Grower’s Manual (2001). He also wrote A Natural History of Ferns (2004), which covers many aspects of fern biology. Robbin has traveled widely in Latin America and taught fern courses in Costa Rica, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Bolivia. During summers he co-teaches Tropical Plant Systematics, a five-week long course for in Costa Rica sponsored by the Organization for Tropical Studies. He also teaches Biology of Ferns and Lycophytes at Eagle Hill. T his course teaches simple methods for preparing plant tissues for study with the light microscope. Preparations will be made with nothing more elaborate than a razor blade and some miscellaneous supplies. Each student will be made available a dissecting and a high-powered microscope for classroom use. Lecture topics will include methods for preparing microscope slides (hand sectioning, various kinds of stains and mounting media) and basic plant anatomy (various types of plant organelles, cells, and tissues types). Use, care, and optical aspects of light microscopes will also be discussed. Field trips will be taken on the grounds of the biological station and to nearby lakes to collect specimens for analysis with the light microscope.
