Music Video: Planning
What were we doing last lesson?
Today You will take the knowledge you have previously learnt about pre-production and music video production and apply it to plan a music video.
By the end of today, youMUST be able to develop a basic premise
for a music video
SHOULD create storyboards for your music video idea
COULD develop in depth pre-production planning documentation.
Remind me… What is pre-production?
Is the planning phase of any project. It is where we think about what we need to do, how we will do it, who will do it and when it needs to be done by..
Why do we need to conduct planning for a video production?
What do we need to plan for?
IDEAS
EQUIPMENT
TIME
LOCATION
CAST & CREW
FINANCE
What do we use a storyboard for?
How do we plan how much money we will need for our
production?
Why is it important to plan our finances?
What planning document do we need to do for our locations, and why?
How do we plan our time?
TodayYou will come up with a basic idea for a music video.
You will then begin to develop these ideas by creating the pre-production planning documents you need.
Music video planningYou have been asked to pitch an idea for a music video for the track “Heartlines” by Florence + The Machine
Music video planningYou will need to create pre-production planning for the track, including storyboards, production schedules, milestones, location recces, budgets, filming permissions etc…
Task 1Working alone listen to the song on Moodle and analyse the lyrics. Could you interpret the lyrics and use these to inspire your music video, or will you choose to create an idea that doesn’t relate to the lyrics at all?
Task 2Brainstorm at least 3 different ideas for a music video for the track you have been given. Think about;
how you can use narrative in your videoWhat styles you can incorporateIf you will include any performance in the videoWhere it will be filmed (the location)
Task 3Begin to create a basic idea for a music video by creating brainstorms for different ideas, identifying the styles of music video you could use as well as its setting and basic narrative.
Try to develop these brainstorms as much as possible – the more in depth they are the more developed your ideas will be!
Task 4Start your pre-production planning by beginning to create storyboards for your idea.
Plenary: ideas factoryIn groups of 4, pitch your idea to the others. Explain to them your music videos basic idea and what different styles and techniques you would use to make your video.
Share your storyboard with your peers, and use it to sell them your idea.
Next weekYou will continue to develop your ideas for your music video, applying the pre-production skills you have learnt so far to continue planning your idea.
You should continue to develop your ideas outside of the lesson.
