The ChairmanI am delighted with how well the transfer ofmy former Chief Executive’s responsibilitiesto Robert has gone. The first year has beenbusy for Robert and his team and I takegreat pride in my continuing active role asChairman, being involved in many of thenew initiatives which will take our Companyforward into the next phase of ourdevelopment, whilst providing support toRobert when he needs it.

Thank you all for helping us to come out of2012 on a high. It was an incredible yearboth for me personally and for theCompany in which, in spite of the gloomyworld outlook, we have achieved a numberof firsts covering all sectors of our businessand many of the people within it.

Aerospace has successfully completed thevery challenging Dutch C-130 cockpitupgrade and enhanced capabilityprogramme on the fourth and final aircraft inthe fleet, ahead of time and ahead ofbudget. It has built on its exceptionalrelationship with Lockheed Martin and itsgrowing relationship with Boeing. We arenow doing brilliantly on our P-8 Tanks andthe icing on the cake has been the winningof Project Dolphin, which will once againsee Global Express aircraft in work in ourhangars.

Marshall Business Aviation has relocated toNo. 2 Hangar where it is giving exceptional

service to its customers and the Airportitself continues to grow with promisingcommercial airline expectations.

Marshall Land Systems is in the process ofbeing re-integrated with MarshallAerospace as part of our recently formedMarshall Aerospace and Defence Group.

Motor Group has streamlined its activitieswith world-leading franchises and, aided byour really excellent Marshall Leasingbusiness, has maintained its growth anddevelopment in a very challenging marketplace. Our new Jaguar Dealership inLincoln is a welcome addition to the Group.

Marshall Airport Properties is creatingexciting plans to redevelop part of ourNorth Works site including our farmland. The new development will be called Wing,as was recently reported in the CambridgePress, and will fund the redevelopment ofour facilities and contribute to the housingneeds of the growing City of Cambridgeand of some of our employees.

On the local and national fronts therecognition of our achievements over ourfirst Century in business has beenincreased by the naming of the MarshallGallery in the Cambridge UniversityManufacturing Centre, the naming ofMarshall Court in Jesus College at our oldJesus Lane Garage from which ourbusiness grew during its first 50 years or so,and the naming of the Main Council Roomof the Royal Aeronautical Society in London

as the Marshall of Cambridge Room whichis now decorated with Marshall portraitsand photographs.

From a personal point of view, last year wasextraordinary for a number of reasons. Itstarted with many wonderful celebrationsfor my 80th birthday, organised by so manyfriends from different parts of my life. InJune, I was honoured to be part of thefabulous River Pageant on a wet and windyday to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubileeand then a month later to be able to attendthe amazing Opening Ceremony of theOlympic Games. Closer to home, Sibyl andI have been proud to be involved in anumber of special events organised byChristopher and his wife Penelope, duringher year as High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire.Penny was also our Reviewing Officer at theannual awards presentations evening for104 Squadron of the Air Cadets.

2012 was a truly exceptional year on manyfronts, including the excellent Long ServiceAwards presentations which included twofor 50 years and one for 60 years of service.I am delighted with the way in which, underRobert’s leadership, the Group is goingforwards and building on its core valuesfrom which its success has been achievedfor more than 100 years.

Thank you all very much for all that youhave done for the Group during a verytesting 2012. I hope that you and yourfamilies have had a very Happy Christmasand I wish you every happiness andsuccess in this New Year

The last 12 months has been a busy time for all of us in Marshall. For methe year began with new responsibilities as I took on the role of Group ChiefExecutive from my father, a carefully planned transition which has been aseamless process, and an exciting time for me.

The biggest action we took in 2012 was to bring together MarshallAerospace and Marshall Land Systems to form the Marshall Aerospace andDefence Group, which formally came into being on 1st January this year. This new business will greatly strengthen our proposition to our customers, many of whom were already dealing separately with MA and MLS. It willalso help us win new business around the world as we grow the combinedbusiness.

We had the Gala Awards Dinner a few days ago at which we announced thewinners of the MAVTA Awards for 2012. I hope by now you will have seenthe special Teamwork supplement we have issued listing all of the finalistsand winners. I was delighted to present most of the awards in person andto see Sir Michael get such a great welcome when he went to the stage topresent the Services in the Community Award. I am really thrilled at howthese MAVTAs have already become part of our Group’s calendar and alsowith the huge number of nominations we received this year – 200nominations was a great result and I hope we can beat that again this year!

Very fittingly, The MAVTA award for Team was won by a team of individuals, from many diverse departments across MA, which pulled together a bid for oneof the biggest contracts we have signed for years. Working punishing hoursand rescheduling other commitments, including at weekends, this team firstgot us into the running and then closed this classified contract, and work isnow underway in our hangars and across the business to convert the aircraftinto a new role for our customer. Our reputation for responding to ourcustomers’ requirements and delivering a high quality product on time andwithin budget, is the cornerstone of how we will grow all of our businesses inthe coming years.

Our Motor Group continues to grow and we are looking at a number ofopportunities which may see a further boost to our business this year, but inthe meantime, our existing dealerships have also seen like-for-like growth innew and used cars sales during 2012, and that will also be good news forour important aftersales departments.

In this edition you will see further news of our progress on the plans toredevelop the North Works and the rest of our land to the North ofNewmarket Road, under the name of Wing. The large numbers ofemployees who took the time out to engage with the initial consultationphase has been hugely encouraging, with lots of really constructivecomments and suggestions coming forward.

We have started 2013 in good shape, with lots of strong plans in each ofour main operating companies to “change the gear” and move theperformance of our Group onto another level, one which will give us moremoney to invest in the growth of the businesses. I am sure we will also seethe first of the new daily flights beginning from our Airport to a majorEuropean hub and I hope we will soon be announcing the details of thatexciting news.

Marshall is host to the country’s much valued East Anglian AirAmbulance (EAAA) charity at its Airport, and is also a strong supporter of

the EAAA. The air ambulance plays an important role in saving livesthroughout East Anglia by providing a doctor and critical careparamedic to treat the patient at the scene of their accident and bybeing able to fly them to the most suitable hospital for their condition.

Arthur (Bob) Bye, Maintenance Fitter at Marshall Land Systems, verygenerously decided that when he and his wife Janet recently wed, rather than accepting wedding gifts, they would ask all of theirfriends and family to make a donation to the Air Ambulancecharity.

Bob said, “We were putting two households together and we justdidn’t need a multitude of toasters so instead we asked fordonations to EAAA for two main reasons. The first being that mybrother had an accident collecting firewood in a remote area anddue to the snow the road ambulance could not reach him, howeverthe air ambulance soon had him on his way to Addenbrooke’shospital. The second being that we travel the roads a fair bit andare part of the Goldwing motorcycle club. We have found itreassuring to know that the air ambulance service is there eventhough you hope you will never need it. We wanted to celebrate ourvery special day by helping this great charity to continue itsimportant work and our friends thought it was an excellent idea too!”

Well done to Bob and Janet for their continued encouragement. It is such support that ultimately makes the life-saving missionspossible. In total they donated £600 to the charity and in returnwere rewarded with a visit to the Air Ambulance and a framedphotograph of this visit.

For further information on EAAA please visitwww.eaaa.org.uk or to donate £5 text heli to 70500.

of investment in the growth of ourbusinesses.”

Following an internal companycompetition, with nearly 400 suggestionsfrom employees, it has been announcedthat the new development will have adistinct aviation flavour by being called‘Wing’. The winning suggestion was fromSohail Chughtai, Lead Engineer on theTristar Repair Assessment Programmewho won the prize of a flight for fourpeople for an hour on our simulator at theairport.

Over three days in January MarshallAirport Properties hosted an ‘Enquiry byDesign' for the new urban settlement of

Inauguration of The Marshallof Cambridge Room at theRoyal Aeronautical Society

As an incredibly diverse business that hasgrown tremendously during the past 100years, the Marshall Group continuallyassesses its business operations – internallyand externally – adjusting to meet everchanging needs. This includes regularlylistening to how employees feel aboutMarshall, through our independentemployee survey, conducted by the GreatPlace to Work (GPTW) Institute.

The annual GPTW survey, first introduced byMarshall Motor Holdings four years ago, provides a pulse on what colleagues fromaround the business think and feel aboutMarshall. A lot of progress has been madesince the survey was introduced, but we stillhave challenges to overcome and need towork as one team to become a Great Placeto Work.

Our 2012 survey results were largelyconsistent across the Group, with someoperating companies showing significantimprovements. In fact, our results are

encouraging as Marshall bucked thedownward trend in engagement scoresbeing experienced across most participatingUK organisations, which GPTW report as tenper cent.

Improved communicationA direct result of the results from last year’ssurvey was the introduction of ourLeadership Development Programme forSenior Leaders. And this investment inpeople is being rewarded by this year’sGroup results, which show managers arebecoming better communicators by keepingcolleagues better informed about importantissues and changes and making theirexpectations clearer.

Areas for improvementThis year’s survey results highlighted theneed to streamline certain processes tomake it easier for everyone in the businessto achieve more. This is absolutelyconsistent with our desire to be a values-ledrather than a rules-based company.

We want Marshall to be a place wherecolleagues enjoy their work and arecommitted to breaking down barriers. We’ve already begun building a culture ofrecognition through programmes such asthe MAVTAs, which were created as a resultof employee feedback, but we also need tocelebrate special occasions and have morefun in our daily work.

Thank you for your feedbackThis annual survey is vitally important as itgives us a pulse on how we’re doing as acompany. Across the Group we saw a slightdecline in the response rate, but we werestill above average with 73% of employeesparticipating in the survey.

Thank you to everyone who took the time tocomplete the survey and we hope that, withthe changes we will put in place, as a resultof our locally-owned action plans, we will beeven closer to being a really Great Place to Work.

Cambridge is a seat of learning not only in educationbut also in aviation and has been since the 1930s whenTiger Moths first operated at Cambridge and trainedfuture Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster pilots. TheCambridge Flying Group (CFG) is still going strong, training pilots from all walks of life interested in flyingthis icon of aviation.

Cambridge Flying Group is now the only place in theworld where pilots who do not own their own TigerMoth can learn to fly on them from ab initio – the flyingterm for absolute beginner, to Pilots Licence level, justas Sir Michael Marshall did in 1949!

It is a rare thing nowadays to train entirely on TigerMoths up to Pilots Licence level. Many pilots coming tothe group train on other aeroplanes and “convert” toopen cockpit flying. However Cambridge residents Ed Weatherup and Andrew Wood have just completedthe rare achievement having trained from start to finish on Tiger Moths and, in September, achieved theirPilots licences.

Ed always wanted to fly but “wanted to learn properly in aTiger Moth”. Andrew had wanted to fly since the age of 7and went for a look round flying schools in the local area -and then saw the immaculate yellow Tiger Moth biplanesof the Cambridge Flying Group and “that was it”.

If you are interested in learning to fly with the CambridgeFlying Group Tiger Moths please contact: Howard byemail on [email protected] or call in to see us atweekends when we are flying at Cambridge Airport inNewmarket Road.

Cambridge Airport recently welcomed a historic American bi-plane to its airfieldas part of its four year ‘round the world’ trip to raise money for the Wings ofHope, a charitable foundation set up to provide education for children fromdeveloping nations. The aircraft arrived in the UK in June 1944, served atBoscomb Down and RNAS Abbotsburgh (today’s Glasgow Airport) andreturned to the USA in 1946.
