The Newsletter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association-Alabama Chapter The 2012-2013 AL HFMA Leadership Team attended the HFMA National Leadership Training Conference in Ft Lauderdale, Florida in April. The event provided the forum for Chapter Leaders from across the country to share best practices and challenges with their peers in areas ranging from strategic planning, sponsorship and membership devel- opment to newsletter/communications, programs and finance. Representing the Alabama Chapter this year were Craig Tolbert (President-Elect), Richard Byerly (Secretary), Susan Cornejo (Programs), Christopher Allen (Membership) and Deb Miller (Newsletter/Communications). The team spent three days in information-packed sessions and also had the opportunity to do some planning as to how we can implement some of the great new things we discovered during the conference. We will unveil some of the great ideas during our Annual Meeting in June. One of the highlights from the meeting included honoring retiring HFMA President and CEO, Richard Clarke. Having led the HFMA since 1986, Clarke’s tenure saw membership leap 40%. During the same period, operating revenue for the organization grew from $6.2 million to more than $25 million and average hours of education grew 28%. Clarke spent his career aligning, educating, and motivating healthcare finance professionals to support health care that benefits communities, healthcare organizations, and the nation as a whole. He was recently named to Modern Healthcare magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare. Dr. Clarke will be retiring July 31, 2012. The symbol in the theme logo is called an Inuksuk, which is a stone landmark used by peoples of the Arctic region of North America to provide direction and serve as a point of reference. This issue of the Bama Chatter is dedicated to Linda Maddox. Linda is entering a new phase in her life as she announced her retirement this month. Linda has been with Firstsource as Client Services Director for over twelve years. Not only has she developed relationships with clients on a professional and personal level, but she has also mentored countless internal employees and supported operations in only such a manner as someone with over 30 years of healthcare knowledge and experience can do. Linda has championed an endless number of Process Excellence initiatives at Firstsource and has been responsible for the growth of the MAP (Medical Advantage Plan) program.

Prior to joining Firstsource, Linda was at the Baptist Health System in Birmingham Alabama for over 15 years servicing as the Director of Patient Business Services where she managed a Consolidated Business Office for 10 hospitals.

In addition, under Linda’s leadership the Chapter was awarded Bronze Award of Excellence for Membership Growth, Silver Award of Excellence for Certification and the John M Stagl Silver Award of Excellence for Education. Linda is the loving wife of Billy (Bill) Maddox. They have five children; Tracy Maddox, Melanie Maddox, Sandi and Shane Maddox. She has seven grandchildren that adore her. She loves to work in her garden and enjoys watching birds. She is an avid reader of the Word and numerous authors. Linda’s favorite place to spend time is in the mountains.

More than 55 friends, clients and co-workers gathered in Birmingham on April 12th to honor Linda. Everyone was extremely sad to be losing such a wonderful friend and asset but more than anything wished Linda all the best in her retirement from Firstsource and good luck in her future endeavors.

God Bless you Linda as you enter this next phase in your life. Thank you for your service to the Alabama Chapter.

Dear Chapter Members,

I’d like to start by thanking you for allowing me the opportunity to serve you as your Alabama HFMA Chapter President for the past year. Working with such a tremendous team has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me. I appreciate the hard work of our Leadership and Committee members. I proud of the goals we have achieved as a group and look forward to seeing the results of the plans we have put in place.

We all get wrapped up in our busy days...doing what it takes to manage the business of healthcare. Having an organization like HFMA as an invaluable resource for quality education, business networking, and a collective voice on a national level gives us an extraordinary advantage. I encourage you to really tap in to all the HFMA has to offer you as a business professional. Get engaged. Make a difference.

At the Annual Meeting in June, I will be formally introducing our new Chapter President, Craig Tolbert. Craig is a Principal with Dixon Hughes Goodman in Birmingham. He has been a long-time supporter of our Chapter and has helped me every step of the way on my journey leading this Chapter. Please reach out to Craig to offer your support and expertise. I wish you all the best as we enter the 2012-2013 year. I hope to see you at the beach in a few weeks...we’ve got some fantastic things planned!

ALABAMA HFMA CHAPTER LEADERSHIPPlanning Meeting Summary

On Friday, April 6th, the Alabama HFMA Chapter officers, board members and committee chairs for 2012-13 held their annual leadership planning meeting in Birmingham, AL. This is a time for the incoming President and the leadership team to plan for the upcoming chapter year. During this meeting I laid out the goals and objectives for the upcoming year. My #1 goal is how to bet-ter serve hospital providers with more cost effective and relevant education. I understand the fiscal constraints being placed on you and your organizations. I hope that in the coming months you will see various education offerings that will fit your schedules and budgets. Member Profile LORI CARAWAYAsst. Business Office DirectorTrinity Medical Center

I began my healthcare career in 1988 at East Alabama Medical Center. I was a full time student at Auburn University and got a part time job in the ED registering patients. After several months, I realized I would be work-ing the rest of my life, so I quit my job to enjoy my Senior year at Auburn. I received my Bachelors Degree from Auburn in 1989. While I only worked a few months at EAMC, it planted the seed for my future career in Healthcare. I started working at St Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham in 1991, after working at ITT Financial Services for a year and a half. I held a variety of positions in the Revenue Cycle over the course of 20 years with St Vincent's Health System. I am currently the Asst. Business Office Director of Patient Financial Services at Trinity Medical Center. I took this position in March 2012 and it has been a pleasure to be reunited with a few former co-workers. While healthcare is healthcare....it is both interesting and challenging to move from a non-profit to a for-profit environment. I have been happily married for 14 years, have two boys, and two Japa-nese Chin/Maltese mix puppies. I love to travel, cook, and spend time with family and friends. Most of my spare time is consumed with my kid's activities, and I treasure every minute of it. I am an active member of Bluff Park United Methodist Church.

Every day we are given is a gift from God. I am proud to work in healthcare and to use my skills to help others. "This is the day which the Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24
