Competencies for Graduates of the DMD Program

Introduction

The UNLV School of Dental Medicine Competency statements describe the level of skills and knowledge in each critical area of the curriculum required for graduation from the DMD program. These competencies define the skills required to make the transition from provision of patient care under the supervision of faculty to the independent practice of general dentistry. The faculty of SDM recognizes that there is a higher level of skill described as proficiency that is attained over time and with experience and indicates mastery in each area. The faculty also recognizes that each of these competencies requires a foundational, integrated knowledge base in biomedical sciences, professional studies, and clinical sciences.

It is important to note that these Competencies describe entry-level skills with the understanding and expectation that competency will improve to proficiency over time.

The UNLV SDM Competencies are standards that apply to all age groups of patients including the child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient, and to the medically compromised patient.

In some cases the student will be the primary provider of the procedure and terms such as “perform”, “provide”, “restore”, or “treat” are used. In other, sometimes more advanced procedures the student may perform some of the treatment and will also oversee and coordinate treatment provided by others, or refer the patient to another health care provider. In those cases, the term “manage” is used.

Competency assessment criteria:1.01. Students will be required to pass written examinations on the ADA Code of Ethics as well

as the Dental Practice Act of Nevada.1.01 Students will be continually evaluated for the quality and consistency of their professional

judgment and ethical conduct in the UNLV classrooms, laboratories and clinics, and anytime they represent UNLV at an external site.

1.02 With the UNLV reliance on the electronic curriculum, students will be continually required to utilize information technology to retrieve and manage professional information.

3.01 Through participation in community activities, students will be able to assess the oral health needs of these communities. Competency will be assessed through written examinations and the individual evaluations of supervising faculty.

3.02 While providing oral health and prevention instructions to local community groups, competency will be assessed by supervising faculty through evaluation of their lesson plans and observing their presentations.

3.02 Through written examinations and individual group projects, students will be assessed regarding their knowledge of health promotion and prevention.

3.03 Competency will be assessed by evaluating students’ ability to obtain a medical history in Spanish from a Spanish-speaking patient.

Clinical competency assessment criteria:

Clinical competency evaluation will be performed in the 1st, 3d and 4th years. Students will be required to pass these competency assessments to progress.

DSIStudents will be assigned to setup, maintain and takedown an operatory following all the principles of infection control and OSHA guidelines.

DS IIIStudents will be assigned one new simple or uncomplicated patient and required to examine and gather all appropriate diagnostic data for the patient and develop an acceptable provisional diagnosis and treatment plan.

DS IVStudents will be assigned one new more complex patient and required to examine and gather all appropriate diagnostic data for the patient and develop an acceptable provisional diagnosis and treatment plan.All students will also be required to pass the overall and complete diagnosis and treatment plan section of the mock board exam.

Students will be assigned one new pediatric patient and required to examine and gather all appropriate diagnostic data for the patient and develop an acceptable provisional diagnosis and treatment plan.

1. As part of the DS III and DS IV diagnosis competency examinations, all students will be required to competently perform occlusal examination and analysis including mounted dental casts.

2. All DS III and DS IV students will be required to design, deliver and recall a maxillary stabilization bite plane splint for control of bruxism and/or management of functional disturbances of the masticatory system.

3. All DS III and DS IV students will be required to perform selective occlusal adjustment of the restored and natural dentition as indicated during routine patient treatment.

4. All DS III students as a competency evaluation, will be required to evaluate and trace a cephalogram and identify anatomic landmarks on a cephalogram radiograph.

5 All students during their DSS III or DS IV year and as a competency evaluation, will be required to evaluate and identify Angles Classification as well as anterior teeth evaluation on an assigned patient, decide on need for orthodontic treatment, and write a letter of referral to an orthodontist regarding that patient.
