Morley Festival of Arts and Culture 2018 PLANETS 1

Welcome to Planets, Morley College London’s Festival of the Arts and Culture 2018.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Gustav Holst’s famous orchestral work, The Planets. He was, at the time, Morley’s Director of Music and the centenary has provided us with an ideas launchpad for gathering together a veritable constellation of performances, exhibitions and events.

As you will see from the Programme, our Festival is bookended with two special performances of Holst’s Orchestral Suite and his music appears on the radar at other points over the course of Planets. But whether at the Morley Mothership on Westminster Bridge Road or at one of our satellite venues, there is much else besides: dance, poetry, film, theatre, science, fashion, and art and design, as well as music of all sorts.

We are thrilled to welcome a number of guests from beyond the Morley galaxy too: Turner Prize-winning artist Elizabeth Price, celebrated playwright and performance poet Inua Ellams, acclaimed film-maker Tony Palmer, alternative music producer, DJ and Radio 3 presenter Max Reinhardt, Earth Sciences expert Javier Cuadros, and the London Schools Symphony Orchestra.

Holst’s The Planets celebrated the components of the solar system through their mythical associations, including as the bringers of peace, magic, the mystic, and jollity. We hope Morley’s Planets will be a bringer of all that and more – come and explore, experience and enjoy!

txtʃərz Turner Prize-winning artist Elizabeth Price

5 – 14 July, Gallery opening hours, FREE Drop-in, Morley Gallery

Morley Gallery presents txtʃərz, a new two-screen video installation by Turner Prize-winning artist Elizabeth Price. Set in an undisclosed future, it follows an investigation of a contagion of muteness that affects teachers and soon spreads to other related professions. This strange phenomenon is investigated, debated and disputed, leaving the viewer to consider whose voices are heard in a post-truth era analogous to our contemporary condition. Where better to present this thought-provoking work for the first time than at one of the country’s leading adult education institutions?

“I’m very excited to be showing at Morley College London for two reasons: the institution’s longstanding commitment to experimental art and music, and its enduring optimism regarding the civic benefits of an artistic education. It’s the perfect context for txtʃərz.” – Elizabeth Price

Penny Lecture: Mars – Small, Old, Frozen… Exciting by Javier Cuadros

Monday 2 July from 18:00-20:00, 1p Ticketed Event, Morley College London

Our oldest tradition dates all the way back to when we were first founded. Listen to a lecture on an interesting and unusual topic, delivered by an expert, for just a penny.

The pictures of Mars suggest a hot, dry desert. Dry it is, but very cold. The landscapes we see are very old too, the equivalent to walking into the geological landscape of our Earth just about when life began, some 2,700 million years BEFORE the dinosaurs. The small size of Mars is to be blamed for all this. And yet, there was a “wet and warm” period in early Mars that is causing no end of excitement, and that keeps attracting satellite probes and rovers.

This Penny Lecture is delivered by Dr Javier Cuadros, an Earth Scientist and Researcher from the Natural History Museum.
