We are based in an impressive former school building dating back to1850 located between Leeds and Bradford just off Junction 26 of theM62. Due to staff expansion, we have recently acquired the formerSchool Masters’ house next door. Once this property has beenrefurbished it will accommodate our administration, accounts,customer services and marketing functions along with a new

training room. The old school will then be home to our technical staff,engineers, software developers and our sales team. We have good carparking and demonstration facilities and extend a warm welcome tocustomers wishing to visit for a demonstration or just some advice.

Our customer base in the main is spread very evenly across theEducational, Corporate and Pro-Video sectors. These customers arebased across the length and breadth of the UK and in some casesinternationally, we have included many customer user stories in thisbrochure to provide you with a taste of what we are able to offer youand to give insight into the variety of projects that both ourselvesand our customers have been involved in this year.

In addition to low key open events and tailored evening sessionswith our customers, we also make a point of exhibiting each year atboth the BETT show at Olympia and at the Video Forum/BroadcastLive show at Earls Court. We find these exhibitions a perfect platformto catch up with a lot of our customers, find out what projects theyare involved in and help them to make informed decisions on newequipment that they may need. We enjoy these events as it gives ourteam the opportunity to meet customers face to face that they talkto regularly on the telephone and build more personal relationships.

With this theme in mind, we are hosting our very own exhibition andseminar programme on June 23rd 2008 where we will be joined byleading manufacturers in what promises to be an enjoyable day. Allof our staff will be present and for those of you that have not yet

registered to attend, please feel free to visit the events section of ourwebsite to do so. Openzone City Learning centre first identified the need for a studio over fouryears ago and in the initial phase of their project, piloted the idea with aReflecmedia Chromaflex pop up kit to facilitate the use of chromakeytechnology along with a simple camera, mixing desk and laptop computer setup.

They progressed to three cameras connected to an Edirol VL pro mixer and addedsome green cloth curtaining on tracking to allow more varied use of chromakeywork. They found that the cloth did not produce a good enough chromakey forthem and found their studio to be overly complicated. Mike then contacted Planeton the recommendation of other CLC’s with a remit to install and commission amore user friendly studio for them from scratch.

In August 2007, Planet PC carried out a complete overhaul of the studio atOpenzone; cabling was re-routed, stage boxes added for ease of connectivity and avideo matrix was incorporated to facilitate ease of switching between equipment.A new ReflecMedia Chromakey curtain was installed on the tracking to replace thegreen cloth and some Basemattes were supplied to cover some of the studio floor.To complete the new studio, Planet recommended a Tricaster Studio which negatedthe need for a lot of the previously complex equipment.

Since their new studio was completed, Openzone have utilised it for a whole hostof projects. To support the changes to the primary literacy framework a series ofNews themed days were hosted by the CLC for years 4 and 6 students. Some of theschools chose their own themes, such as Healthy Living for Valley View School andWorld War II for ST Josephs RC primary. The students worked on the news stories intheir own schools during their literacy unit and then used the studio at theOpenzone to record their stories, researching new ones as the day unfolded andpresenting them as breaking news. Primary schools have also used the studio forpersuasive writing tasks, again linked to their literacy units. Fifteen different schoolscreated a piece linked to a period in history to learn the art of presenting cases forand against a theme such as working in a mine in the Victorian era, this made gooduse of live backgrounds and chromakey technology available in the studio.

GCSE Media Studies students from Hebburn and Whitburn C of E comprehensiveschools had to complete a six minute chat show complete with advertisements in asix week timeframe as part of their coursework. They had to produce themes,genres, scripts, logos, props, wardrobe and research their target audience. They weresplit into teams and made excellent use of the facilities at Openzone.

A group of local students ranging from 9 – 19 years old recently produced a shortfilm called ‘Tyne Traveller’ at the CLC. The film recounted the story of a local manwho travelled back in time to the famous Jarrow March incorporating original PatheNews footage and scooped the award for best screenplay in the national First LightsMovie Awards. The students collected their award at the Odeon Leicester Squarefrom Shaun Meadows of ‘This is England’ fame. The film took six months to makeand was produced using live Chromakey technology with the Tricaster Studio.

BaseMatte has been specifically designed to be utilised as flooring. It isChromatte cloth laminated to a close cell, high density, resilient neoprenerubber base that provides a flat even surface. This backing forms easily tomost carpets and solid floors and provides a flat Chromatte panel withno creases. When used with a Chromaflex or Chromatte curtain it willenable the cameraman to frame full body shots.

The BaseMatte comes in 2m x 1.4m tiles. The aim of Lambeth City Learning Centre is to introduce the use of innovativetechnology for children and young people in Lambeth schools. The CLC acts asa test bed for new ways of learning and teaching by providing access to the verylatest ICT facilities, developing new curriculum resources and motivating andinspiring young people to learn.

The studio at Lambeth CLC has allowed many educational projects to take place,some of which have been recognised nationally. The Reflecmedia Chroma Keysolution used in the majority of these projects has proved to be flexible, portableand, with a set up time of just thirty minutes, quick and easy to use for bothteachers and students.

Whilst the facilities are primarily aimed at Key Stage 4 and 5, Lambeth CLC areencouraging the lower Key Stages to take advantage of the technology available.Rossendale School produced a film where the students, some as young as 3 yearsold, could interview each other about their holidays whilst showing their holidaydrawings as a back drop. Lark Hill Primary School took cameras and recordingequipment to Brixton Market where they filmed images and scenes and recordeddialogue, which they then used in an animated film. The film was chosen as part ofthe Co-operative Young Film Makers Festival and screened at the National MediaMuseum in Bradford.

Lambeth CLC have recently been involved in the BBC School Day, where 15 Year 8students presented their own news report using live and pre-recorded material.Using the studio equipment the students were able to divide into teams andpresent, light, film and edit their reports, which is now accessible on their websiteunder the heading ‘Charles Edmund Brooke Video’.

Stuart Hendy, Systems Manager and Joe Halloran, Technical Assistant have foundthat the experience of using the studio is a learning curve for the students, butbecause of the intuitive and user friendly nature of the equipment they soon

become adept. It is also proving a positive resource for students with behaviouralissues with several groups of NEET (not in education, employment or training)students actively engaging in a variety of accredited media courses run at the CLC.

The studio was ‘definitely the way to go’ says Stuart, ‘the specification was exactlywhat we required; the kit looks impressive and has proved easy to use’. Joe adds‘the Chroma Key technology has enabled students to become more creative andexpand from simple usage to more complicated set ups such as car chases. Thisapplies to not just Media courses, but with History, Science and other crosscurricular subjects. We already have many projects booked in for next term.’

Lambeth CLC move back to their newly renovated premises in January 2009 andintend to have a dedicated live production suite with a fixed Chroma Key Studio aswell as the portable solution they are currently using. They are also pleased toconfirm that they have been appointed to start running a pilot 14 – 19 diploma inCreative Media from September 2008, taking 450 pupils from 3 different secondaryschools in the area, as an alternative to GCSEs. The scheme will then increase to 5secondary schools from September 2009.
