Dr. Brad Hough encourages moderation in lifestyle, and is firmly against cutting out any particular food group, including the

much vilified carbohydrates.“Go with a balanced diet,” he said. “People

in general don’t do well by cutting out carbs. If you’re not diabetic, eat from the five food groups, eat frequent meals and practice por-tion control.”

When it comes to including carbs in your diet, Dr. Hough said complex carbohydrates contained in foods such as potatoes and zuc-chini are best.

Dr. Hough advises his patients to avoid so-das, but even these, both diet and regular, can be enjoyed in moderation.

Coffee, too, can be part of a healthy diet – once again, in moderation. To Dr. Hough “moderation” means one to two cups a day.

Dr. Hough is cautious about the notion of superfoods. However, he says that certain foods such as green tea and blueberries have been found to contain antioxidants, which can both help with inflammation and decrease the incidence of diseases such as cancer.

A recent addition to the Regence Health Net-work team in Plainview, Dr. Hough is a Texas native who received his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, and completed his residency in Conroe, Texas. He is also certified in wound care and hyperbaric medicine. Before joining RHN, Dr. Hough worked in Spring, Texas, as a family medical physician.

When it comes to prevention, Dr. Hough advises that parents and caregivers make sure

kids stay current with inoculations such as tetanus and MMR.

As for adults, and especially geriatric pa-tients, flu, pneumonia and shingles vaccines can help them avoid serious diseases and complications.

It’s important for everyone to remember good health basics such as getting good sleep at night, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, controlling diabetes and blood pressure, and managing stress.

“Increased anxiety really knocks the im-mune system down,” Dr. Hough said.

Especially for older patients, Dr. Hough ad-vises routine screening, including colonoscopy, mammograms, PAP smears and cytology. And, of course, they should avoid alcohol, illegal drugs and tobacco.

When it comes to living to a healthy old age, “Some of it’s genetic,” Dr. Hough admits.

As a federally qualified health center, RHN offers discounts to qualifying patients.

Regence Health Network RHN also accepts Medicare and Medicaid patients as well as most insurance plans. An on-site laboratory service allows blood work and other tests to be run quickly, and an on-site pharmacy helps to make RHN a one-stop healthcare shop.

RHN offers mental health services through LPCs Dr. Perry Collins and Dr. Cassie Collins as well as dental services at RHN Dental located at 2801 W. 8th St.

Dr. Hough and his wife, Joy, have three sons, ages 8, 5 and 2. He said he enjoys being in Plainview with its friendly atmosphere and dry climate. “We are accepting new patients and will be happy to see them,” Dr. Hough said. RHN is located at 2601 Dimmitt Road, Suite 104, in Plainview. To learn more, visit rhnmd.com or call 806-291-0297.

It is difficult to underestimate the importance of WJ Mangold Memorial Hospital to Lockney and other

communities in the area.“In addition to agriculture, two things are vital to

Lockney – the school system and the hospital. The people of Lockney are very supportive,” said Jim Heit-zenrater, CEO, FACHE.

WJ Mangold Memorial Hospital & Cogdell Clin-

ics cover a broad geographical range that includes Floyd and eastern Hale counties, part of Matador, and Silverton, where Cogdell Clinic is located. The medical system has 120 full- and part-time employees on its payroll.

Patients can expect a high quality of care from medical professionals including four physicians, a nurse practitioner and a physician’s assistant. They are: Gary Mangold, M.D.; Kevin Stennett, M.D.; Sharie Moore, M.D.; Cynthia Schlueter, D.O.; Misty Holt, FNP; and Jenna Everett, P.A.-C.

“The physicians are some of the best physicians I have worked with in my 40+ year healthcare career,” Heitzenrater said. “And Lockney is very fortunate to have such quality physicians on staff.”

WJ Mangold Memorial Hospital is located at 320 N Main St., Lockney, TX 79241. Contact them at 806-652-3373 or visit www.mangoldmemorial.org.

Mangold is a Critical Access Hospital, a designation given to rural hospitals by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Critical Access Hospitals have 25 beds or less and are at least 25 miles from the nearest provider. Included in those 25 beds is a swing bed program. This program allows a patient extended nursing and therapy services beyond their acute care stay.

The hospital has a Level 4 Trauma Designation program which allows hospital staff to initiate care on emergencies such as broken bones or injuries requir-ing minor surgery. The highest trauma designation a facility can receive is Level 1.

“We provide care to our patients, from cardiac treat-ment to diabetic emergencies and beyond. Patients in need of hospital care are admitted to inpatient services or are transferred to a higher level of care at another facility. Our emergency department is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is a service to the county and counties surrounding Floyd.”

If the patient is transferred to a higher level of care, our staff maintains communication with the staff at the receiving hospital. Once the patient is discharged from the other hospital, staff has options to either discharge home with our Home Health, admit to our swing bed services or be treated by our outpatient services.

The nursing staff is managed by Billie Hendrix, WJ Mangold’s Director of Nursing.

“Billie is one of the best DON’s I’ve seen in my 40 years in the profession,” Heitzenrater said. “I must add that the level of the management teams here in Lockney is also of the finest quality.”

In addition to other ancillary services, WJ Mangold also offers Physical Therapy services. The Physical Therapy department provides outpatient PT services as well as inpatient services and swing bed services. The department is staffed by quality Physical Therapists

Mangold is equipped with up-to-date equipment including a 16-slice CT scanner and a mobile MRI that comes once a week. They offer a wide range of services including X-ray, ultrasound, a lab and a respiratory therapist

WJ Mangold Memorial Hospital, formerly known as Lockney General Hospital, was originally established in 1948 by pioneers in the community, who envisioned a community hospital providing local care for its residents. In 1973, Lockney General Hospital District was established through the Texas Legislature and took over the ownership and management of Lockney

General Hospital. The hospital district is governed by a five-member Board of Directors, which oversees the operations of the hospital and its related subsidiaries.

Throughout its existence, WJ Mangold Memorial Hospital has continued to upgrade its facilities in order to provide the most up-to-date care for patients. Various additions and improvements have been made throughout the years to enhance the hospital and clinic. The Martha Ann Cogdell Trust has been instrumental in provid-ing funds to the hospital during times of need, and has offered much support for many of the renovations that have occurred. The hospital’s clinic was renamed Cogdell Clinic, in appreciation to the Cogdell’s for the support they have granted this facility.

“We are proud of what we represent in this community and the health care profession,” Heitzenrater said. “It is our goal that we will continue to provide a long history of health care in an atmosphere of love and understanding far into the future.”

Dr. Brian Henning, a Friona native and Texas Tech alumni, opened West Texas Dental Associates in Plainview in 2016.

“One of the reasons we started an office in Plainview was to help some of our elderly patients that were having a harder time coming to Lubbock.” Dr. Herring said. “We wanted to have a place that they could access. So, we have a great deal of elderly patients that allow us to take care of them during the Golden Years.”

Along with three experienced associates, Dr. Herring offers the following services:

• Preventive treatment, cleanings• Restorative and reconstructive dentistry. • Implant. Surgical and restorative treatment• Dentures• Cosmetic dentistry• Family dentistrySenior care features specialized visits, treatment

and education tailored to seniors including clean-ing bridges and dentures, and minimizing sensitiv-ity caused by receding gums. Implant placement and restoration is also offered and includes sup-

ports for your false teeth, placed or repaired with maximum comfort and durability in mind.

West Texas Dental Associates can restore or replace partial or full teeth for you for a variety of reasons to minimize stress on your surrounding teeth, and to restore your natural appearance.

Dr. Herring sees all ages, striving to make dentistry easy and available for families to come to one location and not have to go to several offices in order for all family members to be seen.

Regular visits include an exam of your teeth, gums, fillings and mouth, as well as education of best practices for oral care and products.

West Texas Dental specializes in cosmetic den-tistry treatments to straighten, lighten, reshape and repair your teeth, such as whitening, tooth-colored fillings, veneers, crowns, bridges and implants. They also make treatment of an infected, dying or dead tooth through root canal as painless as possible while completely removing any infec-tion, cleaning the root and filling the tooth.

“We hold the doctor/patient relationship in the highest regard and will strive to work together to find solutions that fit your wants, needs and life in order to achieve your optimum oral health,” Dr.

Herring said.Dr. Herring received a Bachelor of Arts degree in

history with a minor in biology and chemistry from Texas Tech in 1997, meriting places on the Dean’s List, on the President’s List, in the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and in the Order of Omega Honor Society. He earned his dental degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in 2005 in Dallas, using his elective courses to study dental implants, advanced endodontics and forensic dentistry. He was a member of Xi Phi Psi Fra-ternity, the American Student Dental Association and the International Association of Dental Research.

Dr. Herring is married to the former Lindley Douglass, a Plainview native and Texas Tech alum-nae. They have two children, Cameron and Tess and are active members of First United Methodist Church of Lubbock. In their free time, they enjoy family get-togethers, spending time with friends and cheering on the Red Raiders.

By Carole A. Bell, LPC

Throughout history, people have sought counsel from friends and family when faced

with difficult situations. Friends may listen over coffee or along a walking trail. Good counsel may come during the cool down after a fast game of racquetball. Sometimes, informal help is all we need.

When we need more formal help, we can meet with a professional trained in behavioral health. Licensed Professional Counselors’ (LPCs) exten-sive training equips them to guide clients as they manage problem situations and become skilled at helping themselves in challenging circumstances.

Do I need professional help?Telling a friend or family member about your

problems comes with complications. The friend you talk with may have an opinion or agenda re-garding whatever is going on with you. A counselor not only brings to the counseling session an exten-sive amount of training and experience but is an objective outsider. A counselor also keeps what you say confidential when a friend might not.

What kinds of behaviors or feelings tell me that I have a problem beyond what can be resolved over a cup of coffee?

• Depression or anxiety that interferes with your ability to function in your responsibilities such as a job or school

• Suicidal thoughts or plans• Behaviors that limit your ability to

function in the world• Something traumatic has happened, such

as death, divorce, abuse, war experience, or natural disasters

• Inability to stop thinking about a traumatic event

• Physical symptoms associated with emotional upset

• Dependence on substances to cope with life

• Friends and family express concern about you

How does counseling work? The first appointment is generally an intake

session when the counselor hears your story, explains what is expected of both the client and the counselor, and determines the diagnosis. Together the client and counselor set goals for the therapy.

Some counselors are in network with insur-ance companies. Most health insurances cover behavioral health if the counseling meets the “medical necessity” requirement. When you call to schedule an appointment, ask about cost and whether the counselor accepts insurance. Each counselor sets his or her own fee. In Texas, Licensed Professional Counselors cannot bill Medicare. For that reason, persons eligible for Medicare will pay for counseling without using insurance.

On average, clients see the counselor 2 to 4 times a month for one-hour sessions.

How will I know when I no longer need counseling?

The short answer is that you will feel better about life and yourself. But, it is a little more extensive than that. Together, you and the counselor will evaluate your progress in meeting your goals and decide when you are ready to discontinue counseling or to wait longer periods between sessions.

If you think you might need counseling, call one of the many trained professionals in our community. We are ready to serve you.

HOW DO I KNOWIF I NEED TO SEE A COUNSELOR?

A counselor not only brings to the counseling session an extensive amount of training and experience but is an objective outsider.

“I knew I wanted to move to Texas and I wanted a smaller community,” says Dr. Oliver Rusher. “Even Lubbock and

Amarillo were bigger than I wanted. I had visited before and decided Plainview was the best place for my practice.”

Dr. Oliver Rusher moved to Plainview and opened Country Dental about eight years ago. The practice offers a full range of dental procedures including emergency treatment, crowns, teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, dentures, root canal therapy, Botox, TMJ treatment, periodontal treatment as well as routine cleaning and x-rays.

Dr. Rusher notes that one of the biggest changes in dentistry has been technology. This technology allows us to diagnosis prob-lems earlier, treat problems earlier and make things easier on the patient.

“Even with technology, I like being a den-tist because of my patients,” says Dr. Rusher. “I like hearing their stories, being a part of their life. Sometimes I even tell them mine!”

Dr. Rusher and staff have not only embrace technology for dental services but have made it easier for their patients or anyone looking for dental information with their website and Facebook page. By visiting their website – www.rusherdds.com – patients and prospec-tive patients can learn more about the ser-vices they offer, their staff and roles, dental procedures performed in the office including

more information about each procedure as well as booking appointments and complet-ing paperwork. Patients can also keep up with the latest happenings by following them on Facebook at Facebook/OliverLRusherD.D.S.

“We encourage you to check out our web-site,” says Andi Rusher, Registered Dental Hygienists and Office Administrator. “There is tons of information on the site.”

Besides Dr. Rusher, Country Dental staff in-cludes Registered Dental Hygienists Andi and Kaci and Registered Dental Assistants Lisa and Loren. Country Dental is located at 700 Joliet and are open Monday – Thursday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. They can be reached at 806.576.0276 and at www.rusherdds.com or Facebook/OliverLRusherD.D.S.

Don’t let pain slow down your life. And at Covenant Health Plainview, our talented team of orthopedic surgeons can help you regain your movement as they offer

advanced procedures right here in Plainview. Led by experienced and trusted surgeons, Dr. Benja-

min Farr and Dr. Joshua Rollins, Covenant Plainview’s Orthopedic Center offers a wide-spectrum of services that includes total and partial knee, hip and shoul-der replacement.

Plainview Orthopedics has also helped hundreds of West Texans with ACL repair, ligament and tendon repair and reconstruction and rotator cuff repair.

No job is too big or too small for Rollins and Farr as the team can also treat trigger finger, carpal tunnel, hand arthritis as well as complex bone fractures and perform knee and shoulder arthroscopy.

For pain management, the Plainview Orthopedic Center offers injections including Synvisc, steroid, Monovisc and joint aspiration.

On top of that, the Center boasts a spectacular track record with a zero surgical infection rate.

“What I really enjoy about orthopedics is being able to help someone improve their quality of life,” said Farr who has practiced in Plainview for more than six years.

“With a knee replacement or a hip replacement, a patient can walk again and do things with their family they haven’t been able to do.”

Farr attended Medical School at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at Michigan State University’s College of Osteo-pathic Medicine.

Rollins joined Covenant Plainview more than four years ago and has been happily serving the community ever since.

Rollins said he appreciate the almost instant ben-

efits orthopedic surgery can have in the lives of his patients; either that being from performing a total knee to easing the pain of severe arthritis.

“I want to fix it and get them back on their feet,” said Rollins.

“In orthopedics, we are making an actual long-term difference in somebody’s life for the better.”

Rollins received his doctrine in Osteopathic Medi-cine from Oklahoma State University and completed his residency at Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Both physicians say the love raising their families in the caring and friendly atmosphere distinctive to the South Plains.

“In a small community, people are more down to earth and more honest than in bigger cities. That’s something I enjoy,” Rollins said.

The pair’s investment in Plainview will see new heights in the future, as the surgeons have some big announcements on the way; one including the intro-duction of a new physician assistant.

Area Home Care, located at 201 W. 4th Street, has been serving Plainview and the surrounding areas for 16 years.

The agency serves six counties: Hale, Castro, Briscoe, Floyd, Swisher and Lamb. Area Home Care provides skilled nursing services, physi-cal, occupational and speech therapy services and home care aides.

The agency’s most recent star rating from Medicare is 4.5 out of 5 stars, which is above average in the industry. Area Home Care has been nationally recognized multiple times by HomeCare Elite.

Becky Steffens, RN, co-owner, added that the agency staff specializes in disease and medica-tion management and education as well as wound and ostomy care.

Area Home care offers services such as drug administration, IV therapy, lab services and tele-health services.

Area Home care is licensed and certified by Medicare and the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. Plus, they are the only local, family-owned and operated home care agency in Plainview, meaning they are not part of a chain or franchise and do not have a CEO or Administrator who does not live in Plainview.

Steffens owns the agency with her mother Peggy Norris, LVN, and together they have more than 40 years of experience in home care. They both live in Plainview, attend church in Plainview and are part of the Plain-view community.

Becky has served the community in a variety of ways. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Plainview Chamber of Com-merce and is a Leadership Plainview Alum. She has served as a member and Board Mem-ber of Soroptimist International of Plainview. Becky attends church at St. Alice Catholic Church and has previously served as a mem-ber and President of the Parish Council.

“We have vested interest in the people of our community,” said Steffens. “Our patients are also our friends, neighbors and people we go to church with.”

“Our goal is to keep people out of the hospi-tal or nursing home and independent in their own home as long as safely possible,” Steffens added. “Home is my favorite place to be, what a blessing to be able to help others stay at home,” says Steffens.

Area Home Care’s staff seems like family. “We have a wonderful staff. Each and every one of them go above and beyond what they are required to do every day,” she said. “Our

staff is absolutely dedicated to their profes-sion and it shows. We do home care because home is where the heart is!”

To be eligible for services with Area Home Care, Steffens said the person must be con-sidered home-bound. However that does not mean a patient can never leave their home. It means they require the assistance of a device or another person and it takes a consider-able and taxing effort to leave the home. The agency accepts Medicare and other insur-ance plans. The home care agency you use to provide service to you and/or your family member is YOUR choice. If you require home care services, discuss this with your physician sand let your physician know the agency you would like to use. We appreciate those who support our local businesses.

For additional information please call Area Home Care at 806-296-2323.

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and while the dangers of childhood obesity are well chronicled, many families need support changing their families’ habits

with the goal of overweight and obese children obtaining and maintaining a healthy weight. That’s why the Plainview YMCA — a leading community-based organization dedicated to improving health—wants families to understand the dangers of childhood obesity and ways to reverse course through improved eating habits and increased physical activity.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the prevalence of obesity has remained stable at about 17 percent and affects about 12.7 million children and adolescents. Today, obesity affects one in six children and one in three are overweight, which poses greater risks for many health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and some cancers. Here in Texas 15% of all 2-4 year old children and 33% of all 10-17 year old children are considered overweight or obese, according to the State of Obesity/ Robert Wood Johnson Society.

“For years parents have heard the dangers of childhood obesity but making the necessary lifestyle changes—as a family—remains the biggest barrier to real progress,” said Ashley Mayberry, Associate Execu-tive Director of the Plainview YMCA. “Together we can learn healthy behaviors, and community-based organizations like the Y can provide a helping hand.”

The Plainview YMCA is helping families improve their health and potentially reduce the impact of childhood obesity through programs for kids and youth. We organize all of the pre Jr. High youth sports in town, competitive and non-competitive. We want

kids to have fun and learn that being active can be fun. If they learn early on that our bodies need to move and be active it is easier to carry that on into adulthood. It is a bonus for the kids to learn a new skill, run off some energy and make new friends. We also offer a HYPE (Healthy Youth for Physical Exercise) class for 12-16 year olds at the YMCA. Once the youth have participated in the HYPE class with one of our Certified Personal Trainers then they are able to use our cardio and weight rooms at the YMCA. Youth under the age of 16 will not be allowed in the cardio and weight rooms without their HYPE certification. Our basketball gym and racquetball rooms are also available for kids use to practice their skills.

While outside support is key, developing healthy habits begins at home. The following tips are some great ways to incorporate healthier eating habits and more physical activity and into your daily family routine:

• Eat & Drink Healthy: Make water the drink of choice and encourage everyone to fill half their plates with fruits and vegetables by offering two or three colorful options at every meal. As a family choose a new fruit and veggie every week to taste together. Place a full pitcher of water on the table during meals and allow children to pour their own water. Keep full water bottles available in the car and back packs.

• Play Every Day/Go Outside: Children should have at least an hour a day of unstructured play outside (when possible) and break a sweat at least three times a week by getting 20 minutes or more of vigorous

physical activity. Join your children in games that get your hearts pumping and bodies moving.

• Get Together: Eat as a family as frequently as possible. Involve kids in meal planning, preparation and clean up. In addition, adults should take a break from electronics and spend one-to-one time each day with their kids, enjoying one another’s company.

• Reduce Recreational Screen Time: Time spent in front of a television, computer, tablet, cell phone or video games should be limited to two hours or less per day. Make a family plan to reduce screen time at home (i.e. turn off screens during meals, charge electronics/screens in the kitchen overnight, go for a walk after a meal, set a timer to remind you to power down the screen).

• Sleep Well: Kids and adults need to keep a regular sleep schedule; unwind together in the evenings by reading a book or listening to soft music to ensure the body is preparing for sleep. Kids are growing and need 10-12 hours of healthy sleep per night and seven to eight hours for adults.

To learn more about the Plainview YMCA’s upcom-ing sports registration or HYPE class, please contact one of our front desk staff at 293-8319, check out our website www.PlainviewYmca.org, our Facebook page: Plainview YMCA or email Ashley at [email protected].
