Two hundred and fifty five Alumni, former students, spouses and guests attended the PHS Alumni Reunion
on Saturday, Aug. 7 for the every five year get-together in Plains, Kansas.
The event took place at the new Plains Community Building in the Plains City Park.
Its been 45 years since the last class graduated from PHS. There has also been 98 deaths since the last Reunion in
2005, so with 255 attending, we think that was a good turnout. What will the next 5 years bring?
After the 2005 Reunion there were many who wanted to have the Reunion every 3 years, but at the business
meeting on Saturday evening, the majority voted to continue to have it every five years. We hope that was a good
decision, but we know there will be many more Alumni deaths. That’s just the facts of life. Yes, I wished it was
every 3 years, but guess we’ll see how it plays out.
Saturday, August 7 started out at 8:30 a.m. for registration, coffee, juice and donuts. Many seemed glad to
be there and be a part of the big day. There were some who registered, but couldn’t come and others who didn’t
register, came.
We were delighted with the good turnout!
Vicki Fisher crowned Irwin Atkinson, class of 1938, King of the oldest male graduate present.
Margaret (Golliher) Holt, oldest female graduate present of the 1936 class was crowned Queen.
Vicki also recognized past cheerleaders and they came before the group and led everyone in a cheer.
Joyce Knott read “The Reunion” which was well received by the group.
At noon the Alumni had sandwiches, chips, drinks, vegetable tray and cookies. They had four lines for
serving, so it went pretty smoothly. Charlie Angell gave the invocation for the evening meal.
Baked Steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, crockpot corn, lettuce salad, rolls, cherry cheesecake, tea and water was
catered by Heart & Home Catering from Meade, Kansas. Everyone thought all was delicious! We were all
served at our tables by the Southwestern Heights Honor Society and Cheerleaders, with some also helping with
the registration.
New officers for the 2015 Reunion will be: President, Wayne Powell; Vice President, Elvin Harris;
Secretary, Kathy Boyd ; Treasurer, Lana Miller, with Vicki Fisher, Lelia George and Steve Eisenhauer helping
out as needed.
For future PHS Alumni Corespondence please mail to: Plains HS Alumni, Box 511, Plains, KS 67869. We
still have Alumni Directories for sale at $5. We ordered extra for those that didn’t make it to the Reunion, but
would like one for the addresses of many Alumni and former students.
At the evening meal, President, Wayne Powell recognized Harold Rickers for being the first one to get in
his registration for the Reunion, he was awarded a PHS 2010 Reunion Shirt.
Kirk Coats was awarded a special placque for the many, many hours that he devoted to getting a Plains High
School Web Site. For those who don’t know, he did extenstive studying in the Museum, Court House, schools, etc.,
etc to have it as complete as can be for all of our enjoyment. The Web Site is: www.plainshighschool.com
The table decorations were made by Vicki Fisher with help from her sister Karen Cobb. Whoever had a
sticky on the bottom of their chairs were the winner of the table decoration.
The SWH Mustang Singers entertained the Alumni for a short time. We appreciate all who sang for us.
All the Alumni sang together our theme song “Those Were The Days, My Friend” and “The Plainsman
Song.”
It was decided to have a Trophy Case installed in the new Plains Community Building to hold all the old
trophies that are at present in the old high school. Also a couple of files to hold past records of the PHS Alumni
Reunions. Someone suggested that we pass the hat and see if we can’t get enough to pay for the case. Steve
Eisenhauer passed the hat and it netted the Alumni $2,285.00. Whatever is left over will go into the Scholarship
Fund, which Bob Kaberlein brought us up-to-date on.

Thanks to everyone of you who attended this year’s Reunion and for making it a success. Without you
coming we would have had a very dull time. Thanks to all who helped in any way and to the city for letting us use
the facilities at the Plains Community Building, the golf course and swimming pool. They all worked out great. We
are looking forward to the next Reunion, whenever, remember it’s always the first weekend in August!!
