Make the copy searchable – think of a job posting as you would a webpage. Not too long, not too short. Stick to what’s important and start with a brief overview of the job, then get into some of the nitty-gritty details. Add minimum and preferred qualifications. Then close with a call to action. Your CTA can be something like “Click here to join the team!” that takes the applicant to the application portal page OR even better asks them to respond with an easy question. Having the applicant answer an easy question at the end like… “What’s your favorite breed and why” or “Tell us a short story about your favorite pet experience”… this will help you weed out anyone who doesn’t include the answer to your questions. List any qualifications that are non-negotiables and make sure those are highlighted, but don’t be so stern or firm about it that you could miss great candidates. Length should be 400-800 words. Consider going visual. Include any info-graphics or photos. If the job posting platform allows you to post photos, include photos that give them an insiders look into your space, the team members, customers, events, any aspect that their would represent their role that could be seen as exciting or motivating for them to work at your company. When writing a job post think of the key personality traits an ideal candidate would have and include those in your post… like “Fearless Critical Thinker” or “Passionate believer in”. Remember it’s an ADVERTISEMENT! Advertisements are supposed to sell something. A better ad can help you recruit better people.
