  • The nave usually has pews, woodcn benches with

backs, for people to sit on, though some have wooden

Somewhere in thc church, often in rhe chancel,

there is usually în organ to provide music for services.

On the *'alls of thc church there may he hanners, pictures or monuments to memhcrs of the churchwho have rl ied.

Towards the front of rhe nave is the usual place for

the pulpit. This word i)riginally meant 'pl.ìtfonrì'. lt is

a rarsed place where th€ priest or minister stands tt)preach the sermon. PLrlpirs usually have a flighr ,rf

steFs so that the perr)n preaching is r.rised abovc thenave ànd everyone can see and hear them.

Ofren placerl opposite the pulpit is a lcctern, .ì

special stan.l on which the Bihle ìs place.l and from

whcre it is read. For many hundre.ls of yeàrs, it has beeo traditional

for rhe altar to he place,l at the far easr end of the

church. When the priest stood at the altar he thcn had

ahout to begin, and also at times ofcelebrati()n, such

as festrvals and marriages, and at times of moÌrrntng, such as funerìls.

As well as the main features of a church bui[1ing,

there are many other fumishings inside which can

Flay an imlortant part in worship. Many churches, particularly older ones, have

stained glass windows. Although these maysometimes just be decorative, they were origrnallydesigned to tell stories from the Bible and from thelives of Chrìsrian saints. ln the Middle Ages mostpeople could nor read and so these provided a way ofreminding rhem of stories and teachings. At thistime, rhe inside walls ofchurches were also used forpaintings. ln parricular, rhe arch over rhe rood screenoften contained very vivid paintings of the Day of

Look at some of the different styles of churchbuildings and try to find out what they are called andwhen thev were built. The puipt at Canterbury Calhedra.

  • his back to the people, 'facing Ood'. More recentlysome churches ha'e moved rhe altar away from theeast wall so that the priest is facing rhe people. Thearea around the altar is called the sanctuary

The altar may he of stone or wood and is usuallycovered with a colrured cLrrh which shows theseàson in the church\ year (see page l7) and rhen al inen clrth on top.

The altar may have large candlesticks on it, usuallyrwo Lrr six, which are lit during seNices. In the pastthese always served a pracrical puryiose of providing

light but are also a reminder that Jesus was the 'Light

of the World'.When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said:

I an the Lght of the world. Whoev4 follows me will nevelwolk in do*ness, but will hove the light of life.

    ( lohn 8:12)

In the wall hehln.l the altar or to the side is oftena box called a tahernacle. Here the consecrated hrcadis placed after thc Eucharisr. It can then be taken bythe priest to Anyone $ho is tnr sick to attend church.Sometimes rhis tabernacle hangs over the altar and isthen called a pyx. Near rhe tahernacle there willbe alieht buming tl) show rhat the consecrated bread isinside.

A church may have several altars and there areoften others placeJ in the transeprs. When thishappens the main altar in the east is called the HighAltar.

Every church is dcdicated to a particular biblicalperson or saint anJ the side altars may then be namedfor other saints or sometimes events in the life of

Jesus. Somcrimcs these altars may have statues orpictures of these saints ahove them.

Some churches, particularly Roman Carholic ones, have statues of the Saints around the church antlpeople light vorive candles and place them in front ofrhe starues, askrng rhe particular sàint to pray forthem. There will also be crosses and ctucifixes. Acrucifrx r. / cr,^. with rhr rmage ufJe"u" on rt.

Around rhc walls of the church may be pictures ofthe 14 Stations 0f the Cross.

When the Franciscans were given custody of theholy places in Jerusalem in the l ì00s they developed

these 14 Srations of the Cross so that pilgrims couldpray along the Via Dolorosa (see page 63) ftrllowingin the steps ofJesus.

Each station represents an event in the last day of

Jesus' life. Seven of the events come from the gospels

ànd the others are traditi()n:rl.These are the 14 srations, followed by the

rradirional Franciscan prayers said at each one:
