After a long time searching for a placement, with a few

disappointments on the way, I finally got offered to do a placement with

a photography events company based in shoreditch, east london.

They have been established in the Uk since 2005, and offer the

following; photography workshops and courses, photography treasure

hunts, corporate team building events and photography competitions.

They also represent commercial photographers and have an online photo

library.

After meeting with the company’s creator and owner, it was clear that

my role would involve numerous things and that my duties would change

day to day. What I understood was that I would be helping them

prepare for upcoming events, and that My role would involve a mixture

of creative and administrative tasks.

The aim for the project was to experience another job role within the

photography industry that wasn’t a photographer. This is because I

had never had first hand experience of a job working with a

photography company, rather than independently, so I wanted to see

how well I would work creatively with a team.

The first job that I was given was to research twitter (as no one in the company knew what it was about) and set up an account for the company. I wrote them a report, and I was in charge of all aspects of the company’s twitter, including writings tweets and ‘following’ industry contacts.

Research on Twitter

Setting up and Handling your account

Setting up an account is simple enough, and you can just enter your basic information in your profile if you wish (just name and email), but it says the more information you add, the more likely you are to come up in searches and therefore gain more followers (followers are the equivalent of friends on Facebook). Ad-ditional information that it is possible to add include location, other websites you may have, and (one line) about yourself.

You can also set up your mobile up with twitter or your blackberry (not so creatively called ‘twitterberry’) and update your profile from either of these devices, which seems to be particularly popular with celebri-ties that want to clear up rumours extra quickly!

It is also possible to monitor who’s following you or any messages received, via email or text, and can set your account to ‘nudge’ you by text when you haven’t updated for 24 hours.

How to search and be found

People can find you through searches, or by looking through the list of whom other people are following. The search option, searches through the most recent relevant updates, with a small section at the side that will match users by those words. Shoot Experience will only come up in the matching users section if writ-ten exactly as it is on the twitter profile name, which is shootexperience. So unless a person is particularly looking for the company and/or write it like this, we won’t come up in the ‘matching users’ section with the name written as it is at the moment. If it is written as two words the most recent updates with these two words will come up. It’s clear more updates equals more search results and followers!

There are a lot of users and even more updates being made every second. I updated my profile by writing ‘just joined’ and a few second later searched ‘just joined’ which was top of the results. However 20 minutes later I just about made it onto the bottom of the second results page. Okay, so ‘just joined’ must be a com-mon phrase written on twitter, but it still gives an example of how fast things move on there.

‘Find people’ is useful if you already know the first, last or profile name of whom you’re trying to find. This will probably be the least likely way that a profile is found unless it is a well-known celebrity or com-pany, e.g. Paris Hilton or The Guardian.

Interacting with others

By now it has become very clear that on twitter it’s all about updating! People that are following you get your updates on their page and vice versa. You only have 140 characters to write your update, so being straight to the point is definitely a must!

You can send a message to someone by going onto their page and going to ‘actions’ and clicking on ‘mes-sage’. This will go straight to their direct messages that only they can see. If you reply to an update that someone has posted, this will appear on your own profile as an update.,

Page 7: Placement Report

Company to company interaction doesn’t seem like it really goes on. Twitter seems to be more about com-pany to client, or celebrity to fan interaction. So most big names have thousands following them, but they are following much less (usually under a hundred). These people are usually business contacts.

How Twitter can be used for Shoot Experience

It seems that company twitter profiles work best in conjunction with other websites, so twitter functions as an additional website rather the main one. It’s good for getting out information or reminders quickly. For example if an event’s coming up, a twitter update with a line or so about the event, with a link to the main website for that event.

For people interested in the company it’s easy and straightforward to find out what’s going on, as there aren’t the thousand of distracting applications that Facebook has!

It also seems beneficial to be connected to people that have been or are currently involved with the company. It keeps them in the know with what Shoot Experience are doing without them even going out of their way! This would hopefully get or keep people interested, and generate more business.

The placement was not what I expected it to be. Altough I did help

prepare for events as I tought, the tasks that needed to be carried out

were usually fairly straight forward and quite tedious. I did not feel

that I was challeneged enough. I hoped that I would be able to use

my creative skills and photography knowelged, but I learned that these

skills were not eseesntial to have for the job role I was doing.

Another down side to the placement was that I felt expoited. Although

I understand that usualyl placements are unpaid and I did not expect to

get paid, I felt that this company used it as a way of saving money. The

company was very small, and could’ve benefited from a lote more

employees, however they constantly had people on work placement

instead.

Nonetheless I tried take as much the experience as possible and use it

as a positive. I learned the importance as being thorough with all my

work, no matter how big or small the task. I also found that liasing

with clients and contacts plays an important role and kept a proffesional

manner at all times. Most importantly I learned that this is not the

job I wish to pursure in the future. I would enjoy more and be best

suited to a job where I am require to give more creative input, so for

these reasons feel that my time at Shoot Experience was usccessful.
