Genesis of UIAMS

Panjab University has been imparting quality education since its inception in 1882 at Lahore, which was relocated to Chandigarh in 1956. The more than 127-year old institution has been a constant source of inspiration for the student fraternity. Pt. Nehru praised Panjab University as the 'University Beautiful' in the 'City Beautiful'. The university draws its faculty and students from all over the world, by virtue of its age, experience, achievements and vision. The Panjab University is a dynamic institution and has, from time to time, added new courses to meet the industry demands. Panjab University conceptualized Faculty of Business Management & Commerce under which the Department of Commerce and Business Management was established in 1958 to provide commerce education to graduate and post graduate classes. It was a pioneering attempt by the university to start MBA in 1968 and to impart quality management education and develop dedicated, innovative and effective managers. The department was rechristened as University Business School (UBS) in 1995. The institute has been churning out well-trained management professionals for decades now. In pursuit of further excellence in the domain of management, Faculty of Business Management & Commerce, Panjab University, in its golden jubilee year 2008-09, launched another star Institute University Institute of Applied Management Sciences with its acronym UIAMS. The Institute draws on the academic strength and resources of Punjab University. The above sectoral MBA programmes are supplemented with specialization in a core functional area of management via Marketing, Finance, Human Resources and Operations & Systems in the final two trimesters. The rigorous course structure thus fine- tunes managerial specialization with competencies of domain- specific knowledge.

The proposed five storey building coming up on four acres of land with lush green environment in the south campus, Panjab University. The flings of the proposed building carry 16 teaching classrooms, management development programme room, director's room, a student centre, auditorium of 200 capacity, library with RFID, advanced computer labs and parking for 200 cars & scooters.

Physical Facilities

UIAMS is located in Chandigarh which is the Gateway to the North and is on its way to build an Information Technology park, on the lines of other Techno- Savvy cities in India. Educational activities are the hallmark of Chandigarh, its focal point the Panjab University. The infrastructure of UIAMS offers the right opportunities for self- learning, knowledge building and exploring ones potential. PU Library The A. C. Joshi Library at P.U. is recognised as one of the best libraries in India. The library houses a collection of 6, 50,000 books, 600 periodicals and 535 journals. It subscribes to 45 magazines and 23 newspapers and has a membership of over 10,000. The library reading room is available to the students 24X7. In addition to this the library has over 10,000 Management books and subscription to over a 100 reputed journals and periodicals, enabling students to supplement their textual knowledge with facts and references from around the world. UIAMS Library Keeping in mind the growing needs of students, the institute has established an elibrary in the campus. The e-library allows students to access to online journals, databases and various research articles of EBSCO database. The institute has the Business Source Complete database from EBSCO considered to be the best research tool for academic business research. The database has 17,651 full text company profiles, 1, 552 full text country economic reports, 17,761 full text industry reports, 2, 101 full text market research reports, 1, 385 full text working papers and a whole lot of other relevant research material. The department is also deploying RFID (radio frequency identification) technology in its library which will improve the overall library management. I.T. Infrastructure UIAMS is equipped with a state of the art computer lab, with all the terminals connected to broadband internet. Moreover the institute is Wi-Fi enabled. The institute has one of its own kinds of virtual library called the Cyberary. In addition to this the department has an auditorium and seminar halls to facilitate guest lecturers with full audio-visual aids and computers. Class Rooms The institute boasts of latest technology equipped class rooms with laptops and all relevant audio visual aids. The class rooms have ergonomically developed furniture, LCD & Overhead projectors, Sound system etc. Hostel The Panjab University offers seven hostels for about 2000 men students and five womens hostels accommodating about 1500 students. The residential facilities for all students are Wi-Fi enabled. Sports Panjab University has a magnificent air-conditioned gymnasium hall for in-door games with international standard facilities and equipment for badminton, tabletennis, weight lifting, judo and wrestling. A separate fitness centre for women and a well equipped physiotherapy laboratory has also been established in the gymnasium hall. Industry-Institute Interaction

Pradanya-2008, Jaipur Pradanya-2008 a conference on Governance In Healthcare-Emerging Challenges was held on 29th and 30th Nov, 2008 at Institute Of Health Management Research, Jaipur. IHMR, JAIPUR. The students of Pharmaceutical management and hospital management attended Pradanya. The topics discussed in the conference immensely extended the knowledge of the students and in future will contribute towards making recommendations for achieving best patient care program in hospitals. Along with educational trip, the students also explored the beautiful pink city and learned about the traditional culture of Rajasthan. Therefore, in whole it was a package of fun with education. Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) Agro tech 2008, India's premier biennial agro technology & business fair which was held in Chandigarh at Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) from 28th November to 1 December 2008. Coinciding with the fair, CII organized a series of International Conferences on various issues of concern to the agriculture sector involving leading luminaries as speakers, from India and abroad. The Conferences served as a one stop shop for the entire agricultural and allied communities such as processed food and supply chain etc. This comprehensive event included three concurrent conferences.

New DriversThe Agro tech 2008 included the participation of Farmers, Companies, R & D Institutes, Universities, State governments, Country International Companies. With participation of both international and domestic players Agro tech 2008 gave a deep insight to the students from Retail Management, who learnt about the actual business practices. The exposition provided a package of necessary information on trends, technology, services, besides the opportunity of interaction with experts. It was a great experience & exposure for the promising managers. Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh UIAMS motivates its students to participate not only in curricular but also in the extracurricular activities. The second national conference on recent trends in hospital administration HART-2008 was held at PGIMER, Chandigarh. Hospital management students attended the conference and gave poster presentation on the current hospital related issues. International Conference on Banking Consolidation International Conference on Banking Consolidation was conducted from the 19-20th of December, 2008 at IBS Mumbai where distinguished speakers and panelist from RBI, HSBC, SBI, CRISIL, IIBF and other public and private sector banks, and financial institutions gave their presentation. Students of MBA (Banking & Insurance), UIAMS attended plenary and paper presentation sessions on: Contemporary Issues on Banking Consolidation, Impact of Technology on Banking Consolidation, Valuation approaches and Financial Modelling for M&As, Basel II Framework and M&As, Cross-border M&As and its Efficiency Studies, Legal and Regulatory Aspects and Human Resource Management. Payal Dey, an MBA (Banking & Insurance) student of UIAMS won the Best Paper Presentation Award on the paper titled Banking Consolidation (India): Retrospect and Prospects.

Industry-Institute Interaction

International Conference of University Institute of Chemical Engineering (CHEMCON 2008) The pharmaceutical management students attended the CHEMCON 2008, the 61st annual session of IIChE (Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers) which was held in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Punjab University from 27th to 30th December 2008. The theme of the conference was Green Technology & Sustainable Development. The conference featured a host of events, which included memorial lectures, plenary lectures, seminars, symposia, panel discussion, exhibitions, etc. The second day of the CHEMCON-2008 fest was commemorated as the 75th birth anniversary of Dhirubhai Ambani. A joint US-India conference on energy was organized on 28th and 29th December. Conference on Telemedicine, at Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) A conference on Telemedicine & its scope was organized by Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Mohali in collaboration with Prof. Chetan S. Sankar. The speaker was Mr. Thomas Walter, professor from Auburn University, USA. The conference covered the need & scope of telemedicine in India. The delegates were made aware of the difficulties faced with the implementation of the concept of telemedicine in rural india & steps being initiated by C-dAC, & the govt. The Cdac director also gave a detailed report on the recent projects being undertaken at C-Dac. Indian Institute of Materials Management (IIMM) Indian Institute of Materials Management (IIMM) is the National Apex body representing a wide spectrum of professionals engaged in various facets of Material Management, responsible for planning, sourcing, Logistics & Supply Chain Management conducted a workshop on global economic meltdown. The main agenda was understanding the reason of meltdown and its impact on developing economies like India. Economist say that we are about to hit the bottom and the world economy is expected to contract for the next 1-2 years but as dignitaries delivered they focused on the new opportunities to be found out like to keep ear to the ground and keeping in touch with supply base. Corporate Exposure : Five Days Maha Bachat (5-DMB), Big Bazaar Big Bazaar is a chain of hypermarkets in India, with more than 100 stores in operation. Big Bazaar, an initiative of the Future Group, organizes certain events wherein the retail outlet offers mind boggling discounts. Such events are normally held on festivals. One such event held from 12th to 16th Aug 2009 was the 5 Days Maha Bachat (5DMB) at Big Bazaar. UIAMS students and Big Bazaar joined hands to make this gala event a huge success. The students of UIAMS got an opportunity to work at the grass-root level and be involved in the decisions making process on a daily basis to ensure the smooth running of the store. The students got a chance to learn from the staff and the customers not only by observation but also by personal interaction. It was an enriching experience that gave the students the platform to learn merchandise management, crowd management, warehousing management and productivity management.

Ac hievements & Accolades

It is a matter of pride for UIAMS that Amit Bhatia, a student of MBA II (Banking &Insurance), became the President of Panjab University Campus Students Council for 2009-10. This was the first time that a management student was elected to the highest post in the Student Council. Amit's inherent leadership skills came to light when he won the coveted post in Panjab University. Jagdeep Singh of MBA (Retail) 2008-10 won Gold Medal in Panjab University Inter-college rowing championship in November 2008. Mala Gaba of MBA (Banking & Insurance) 2008-10 won Bronze Medal in Inter-college rowing championship in October 2008. Payal Dey of MBA (Banking & Insurance) 2008-10 won the Best Paper Presentation Award on the paper titled Banking Consolidation (India): Retrospect and Prospects in the International Conference on Banking Consolidation, organised by IBS Mumbai in December 2008. Swati Sawhney of MBA (Banking & Insurance) 2008-10 sold 8 policies worth Rs. 2.8 lakhs during her summer internship with Bharti AXA Life Insurance and earned a commission of Rs. 86,000.

Debate Club The club helps organise debates at meets and seminars. Such debates act as platform for students to develop and master the ability to express their opinions. The club also organises Biz quizzes like Cerebrum. Sports Committee The sports committee helps organise inter-institute meets and activities to develop the overall personality of the young managers. Cultural Committee The cultural committee is responsible for bringing out latent talents of every individual at UIAMS. The committee organises various events and programmes. Praznik'09, a business and cultural extravaganza was organised as the 1st Management fest in the history of Panjab University. The motive behind holding the fest was to provide a congenial environment and encourage healthy competition amongst the best talent from different B-schools. The corporate leaders shared their views and experiences which added a lot of value. Placement Cell The placement cell stands out as the most important element of the Department providing the most sought after opportunities for the UIAMS students. The placement committee comprises of faculty and students with Head of the Department as the Chairman and one faculty member as the Placement Officer. The objectives of the placement cell include helping students to plan their future career, maintaining liaison with prospective employers, preparing students for interviews, and getting placements. Campus Connect This club helps the prospective students with application, know the institute and the courses better. The purpose is to make it easier for prospective students to understand what UIAMS is all about and to make their application process simple and straight forward. Campus Connect is a highly cohesive unit with a rich blend of students from varied domains of science, technology and commerce. Student counsellors, guide the students to make the right choice for their education and career options. Sectoral Clubs Each sector has its own club. Personality development activities, Group Discussions, Case studies and Management Games are conducted under the guidance of these clubs. Apart from these, industrial visits and Interactive Sessions feature regularly in the Club's Agenda. It helps them build confidence and positive thinking which is then translated into attitude, ambition and action. This club has organized visits to Agro-Tech 2008 at CII (Chandigarh), a seminar on Global Meltdown at IIMM, Malls in and around Chandigarh, case studies of several companies like wrangler, Revlon etc. Executive Cell, Academic Cell and Case Unit These clubs regularly monitor the course curriculum in order to ensure that it is at par with the ever changing, dynamic global business environment of today. They ensure that the course material and case studies are easily available to the students and they also organise guest lectures.

PRAZNIK 2009

PRAZNIK'09 the annual management cultural festival The word PRAZNIK means-'Festival of fun and frolic 'in Russian. In less than 6 months from the day of inception of the institute, the students of UIAMS were able to stage one of its kind & a very gala departmental festival. Books & classroom studies can teach one only theory & concepts but, a pragmatic exposure to the real world tests the actual organizing & management acumen of any aspiring manager as well as the mettle of nerves. PRAZNIK was a multidimensional enterprising as well as a challenging experience for everyone. In the times of global recession, getting sponsorship for the fest was an uphill task but, the students did a wonderful job by arranging all the funds through their coordinated and committed efforts. Door to door marketing, corporate presentations, negotiations across the table; they did everything and that too with grace and glory. The three day event had one complete day dedicated to business seminars, where different leaders from diverse backgrounds shared their professional experience with our students, to name a few Dr. Pawan Aggarwal, CEO, Munmabi Tiffinwala (a six sigma retail), Dr. Ashish Banerjee, Director Fortis Hospital, Dr. Anil Gupta, Director, PGI Health, M r Vivek Attari (IT), Mr. Anil Kumar, Director, EESSI infrastructure. To add further, we also had hard core business event like virtual stock market, brand auction, biz quiz & many more to test as well as to hone the business acumen of the budding managers. There were number of cultural events along with a lot of games packed with fun n frolic. The stall area had number of brands like ICICI, HDFC, Royal Enfield, Bank of Baroda, Amartex etc. displaying their products and services. Fashion Show saw a packed crowd and was acknowledged by all present in the event. The star night with star Punjabi performer AMRINDER GILL performing LIVE saw a huge turnout and there was hardly an inch of space for anybody to come in. To conclude PRAZNIK had everything on the Platter for the budding business managers and would always be cherished as a fond memory as well as a real world achievement for the students and the dept. of UIAMS

The institute imparts education through six trimesters spread over a period of two years. At the end of the first year, the students, undergo an eight week summer training. In addition to it they carry out a research project at the end of the second year. The students opt for a functional specilization in the 5th trimester. In all, the students study nine sectoral subjects, over the span of the six trimesters.

The word Retail has been derived from the French word Retaillier meaning 'to break bulk'. Retail is the final step in the distribution of merchandise - the last link in the Supply Chain connecting the bulk producers of commodities to the final consumers. Retailing covers both goods and services. It covers diverse products such as food, apparels, consumer goods, financial services and leisure. The retail market in India is increasingly becoming the most attractive and enthralling market globally. The Indian retail market is the fifth largest destination globally and this $372 billion retail industry is set to double in just five years. The Indian consumer market is also likely to grow four times by 2025. Organized retail penetration is on the rise and extends an attractive proposition for new entrants both domestic and foreign, as well as scope for expansion for existing players. In the present day scenario, retail is the need of the hour for every business to survive and grow. Its presence is not limited to malls and shops but extends itself to banking, telecom, hotels and many other sectors. Since, retail is growing towards an organized industry; the management skills needed are of utmost importance as in all other organized sectors. Our placement approach The academic rigour of the future leaders is made complete through the placement programme that introduces them to the corporate atmosphere. The graduating batch enters the real life world of management through the final placement programme, while the first year students get familiarized with the industry through the internship programme. The placement activity broadly covers Pre-placement talk, Summer Internship and Final Placement. Pre-Placement Talk Its an opportunity for the corporate world to get better acquainted with their prospective recruits, both for the summer and final placements. The aim of the pre-placement talk is to address typical student concerns like job description, remuneration package, scope for growth & cross-functional exposure. We request and expect every recruiter to hold a pre-placement session wherein all the above mentioned information could be discussed between the recruiter and students. In the event of any recruiter not being able to hold a pre-placement sessions, we request them to send all the pertinent details to the institute through the response sheet to the placement co-ordinator in advance. Summer Training Summer training constitutes an integral part of the sectoral MBA curriculum and is valued for its relevance in management education and its application. Undertaken at the end of first year of the MBA, the summer training is the perfect opportunity for students to apply the theoretical concepts learnt within the classrooms. After completing the first year course work, the students join different organisations for a period of eight to ten weeks on specific assignments as summer trainees. As a part of the internship, students are required to submit a report on the work done. The presentations made by them to the organisation forms the basis for the evaluation of the project work. It is an occasion for prospective managers to explore varied career opportunities in the areas of their interest. They get a better grasp of the important inter-linkages among different functions and develop a realistic managerial perspective on corporate working. Final Placements The final placement programme helps the students to launch their career in corporate world. It gives an opportunity to students to utilize the skills and knowledge that they have acquired in MBA Programme. The Placement cell serves to bridge the gap between a job-aspirant and a prospective employer. The companies get to choose the talent according to their requirements. The companies can choose the candidate according to the skills required and organizational fit. In the final placement programme, the students compete among themselves during the selection process, and hence showcase the best of their capabilities.
