Di Jakarta, setiap pagi ribuan wanita berlari-lari berebut naik bis, kereta api, ataukendaraan umum lain untuk pergi bekerja. Tidak apa-apa kalau mereka harusberdiri atau berdesak-desakan asal bisa naik dan tidak terlambat tiba di tempatkerja. Di beberapa daerah di Jawa Tengah dan Jawa Timur, ratusan wanita naiksepeda atau berjalan menuju pabrik. Dan di kebanyakan desa di Indonesia, sudahbiasa wanita bersama laki-laki bekerja di sawah atau di ladang. Pekerjaan sepertimenanam, menyiangi dan memanen sudah menjadi tradisi ratusan tahun yang lalu.

Keterlibatan wanita dalam dunia kerja sebenarnya bukan hal baru untukmayoritas wanita Indonesia. Walaupun begitu, tidak semua wanita menikmatiimbalan seperti apa yang diterima laki-laki. Pada tahun 1991 pekerja laki-laki diIndonesia memperoleh gaji bersih per bulan rata-rata Rp 134 ribu sedangkanwanita hanya memperoleh Rp 79 ribu atau sekitar separuh (58 persen) daripendapatan laki-laki.
