“The purpose of schooling is to equip students with learning
strategies, or the skills of learning how to learn”
“It is best not to run separate sessions on learning strategies but to
embed the various strategies within the content of the subject, to be
clearer about developing both surface and deep learning, and
promoting their associated optimal strategies and to teach the skills
of transfer of learning.”
Hattie, J. and Donoghue, G. (2018). Learning
strategies: a synthesis and conceptual model.

Imagine there is a bank that credits your account each
morning with SGD$86,400.
It carries over “no balance” from day to day.
Every “evening” deletes whatever part of the balance you
failed to use during the day.
What would you do?
Draw out every cent, of course!!!!
![Page 38: PL21 Sharing 2019 - plmgss.moe.edu.sg · •Have your learning resources ready before the start of your 45 mins block. •Move away from your study area during your break. •Be flexible](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022050611/5fb2447b20804a0fe85eedb6/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
Each of us has such a “bank”. It’s name is TIME.
Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds.
Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose.
It carries over no balance.
It allows no overdraft
Each day it opens a new account for you.
Each night it burns the remains of the day.
If you fail to use the day’s deposits, the loss is yours.

Study-Linked stress a growing concern
"I just want an hour
of homework.
Otherwise, it piles
up and when I
look at the stack
of work, I feel very
stressed out."
Singapore students
were found to have
higher levels of
anxiety about their
tests and grades than
their international
peers.
For example, 86 per
cent of Singapore
students were worried
about poor grades at
school, compared
with 66 per cent of
students across all
OECD countries.

Step #1
•Paying attention to self-talk
Situation:
A test in Maths Class
Thought:
“I’ve studied and I’ll
pass”
Thought:
“I’m going to fail”
Feeling:
Calm
Feeling:
Anxious and Scared
![Page 56: PL21 Sharing 2019 - plmgss.moe.edu.sg · •Have your learning resources ready before the start of your 45 mins block. •Move away from your study area during your break. •Be flexible](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022050611/5fb2447b20804a0fe85eedb6/html5/thumbnails/56.jpg)
Step #2
•Identify thoughts that lead
to Anxiety
•‘What am I thinking right now?’
•‘What is making me feel anxious?’
•‘What am I worried will happen?’
•‘What bad thing do I expect to
happen?’
![Page 57: PL21 Sharing 2019 - plmgss.moe.edu.sg · •Have your learning resources ready before the start of your 45 mins block. •Move away from your study area during your break. •Be flexible](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022050611/5fb2447b20804a0fe85eedb6/html5/thumbnails/57.jpg)
Step #3•Am I falling into a thinking trap?
•Am I basing my judgment on the way I
‘feel’ instead of the ‘facts’?
•Am I 100% sure that I will fail? No, but
what if I do this time?
Challenge
the
anxious
thinking
