Introduction to BIM
BIM is a short of Building Information Modelling. It is “a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. As such it serves as a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle…” defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition. (www.nationalbimstandard.org).
One of the most popular software using BIM is Autodesk Revit. It is used by architects, structural engineers, MEP engineers, designers and contractors. Users are allowed to design a building and structure in 3D, annotate the model with 2D drafting elements, and access building’s information from the model’s database.
This instruction of Kingspan Insulated Panels Library is dedicated for the Autodesk Revit software only. The library is compatible with Revit 2013 or newer.

Uploading the Kingspan Family into Autodesk Revit Architecture
1 Download the family from the Kingspan website. Then open it and click “Load into Project”.
2 Return to the project and you will be able to see the panel family under Curtain Panels.

The energy analyses in the Autodesk MEP Revit
Before starting any Energy Analysis on a model containing Kingspan panels it is needed to update the Constructions.xml file to set up new material types. It is located at:
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit MEP 2013\Program\ for Revit 2013
or
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit 2014\en-US for Revit 2014 or newer.
This file cannot be located on a central server, so it needs to be replaced for each workstation after every update of Revit version. If you have never changed the file, you can just replace the existing one. If you have customized the file before, you should copy the content from attached Constructions.txt file into appropriate places. In this case please follow the instruction below:
1 Find Constructions.XML file in a location based on your Revit version.
2 Open it to edit in Notepad++1.
1 Notepad++ is free for private and commercial use and can be downloaded from https://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/
![Page 8: PL1210141 48 SP 0001 B User Guide - ks-kentico-prod-cdn ...](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020623/61f1603f2c6bb6224e1197e2/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)

3 From the attached Constructions.txt file, copy the first part including Wall, Ceiling and Roof types and paste this fragment as the third line of code at the beginning of the .XML file.
4 Copy the second part of the file including material types into corresponding place at the beginning of all materials in the file.
5 Save the file. You will be able to choose Kingspan panels as Exterior Walls, Ceiling or Roofs category.

Creating Walls
1 Start drawing Curtain Wall. Duplicate existing Curtain Wall and name it as the panel name to avoid potential confusion. Each panel needs to have separate Curtain Wall Type, however it is possible to use two different panels in one Curtain Wall. It will be described in one of the next parts of this document.
![Page 11: PL1210141 48 SP 0001 B User Guide - ks-kentico-prod-cdn ...](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020623/61f1603f2c6bb6224e1197e2/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)

To have two different panels in one wall, you need to select one panel (using tab button), unpin it and choose new panel from the properties tab.
Selecting the colour of the inner and outer panel
It is possible to select the colour of the skin steel – inner or outer. Each family has its basic colours.

Each panel has different types. The types can be changed by selecting a number from the properties bar.
The vertical panel has 5 different finish sides (0-4) and the horizontal panel has 6 (from 0 to 5).

Creating doors and windows
Doors and windows can be created in two ways, depending on the types:
• As a part of the Curtain Wall. The same way as in glass facades;
• Using an empty panel to create opening, drawing a wall and hosting selected doors or windows in it. The wall cannot be bigger than the selected doors or windows.

Creating gates
There is only one way to put gates into a Curtain Wall.
Select an empty panel in the place of the gate, and then create a wall that you will host the gate in.

1 From the properties choose option choose ‘Sloped Glazing’.
The Roof works now like Curtain Wall. You will be able to define the panels and alter their dimensions.
Grid 1 Pattern corresponds to the vertical value in the Curtain Wall and Grid 2 Pattern corresponds to the horizontal value.

Roof panels have an option of Right and Left finish in each panel (as shown below).
Additionally, there are 2 more panels: LEFT ENDING and RIGHT ENDING. Those panels are used when the panel is cut to fit the roof layout.

Creating skylights / smoke vent
You can create skylight or smoke vent by adding segments in the grid and replacing panels with empty ones.

Revit does not offer a perfect solution for the skylights in the roofs built-in as ‘sloped glazing’. It is needed to add several segments into the grid and fill them in with empty panels. Load skylight family (THE FAMILY CAN NOT BE BUILT AS A WINDOW OR DOOR) and place where the empty panels are. Afterwards, you are able to place a skylight in the roof as a component.

2 From the list, choose the parameters that you need:
Please remember that parameters like Coating – Internal and External; Panel Colour – Internal and External, and Field of application are instance parameters and need to be filled in by the user according to the manufacturer’s specification.

Using MEP Revit
1 Update the file Constructions.xml first, then open Revit.
2 Under the Analyze tool, click Heating and Cooling Loads.
NOTE: Space must be placed.
3 Then choose the right Kingspan panel under Exterior and Interior Walls / Roofs or Ceilings and click OK.
