We start with the BLACK keys because they are theGUIDEPOSTS that mark the identit ies of all of the keys. The 5

black keys of each octave group mark the locations of theWHITE keys. Without the black keys, you would not be able to

identify the white keys. They would all look the same.

The diagrams on the previous pages show the

pitch and sequence of each note but don't show

the rhythm. The key maps include the rhythm by

stretching the notes to match the time that it

takes to play each note. Beats are shown by thehorizontal lines crossing the staff.

In this unit , the labels below are used for the BLACK KEY VERSIONS of the songs. The labels for the TEXT VERSIONS are simply the words of the songs. The chart

below shows name and address labels for the notes AND KEYS of the green octave

group. The labels for the white keys are their names, and the labels for the black

keys are their " addresses." (Later, you will learn the " flat" and "sharp" NAMES ofthe black keys.) Labels for the other 6 octave groups are identical to this one.

Each octave group map (and diagram) includes 5 vertical lines for the black keys

and vertical spaces for the white keys between them. For the diagram below, notesfor white keys are white and for the black keys are gray. Notes for black keys are

centered on lines, and notes for white keys are in spaces. The 2 black keys at the

left of each octave group (the low key group) are labeled 1 and 2, and the 3 black

keys at the right (the high key group) are labeled 3, 4, and 5.

ALL WHITE KEYS ARE IN SPACES BETWEEN BLACK KEYS AND ARE IDENTIFIED

BY NOTICING WHICH BLACK KEYS ARE NEXT TO THEM.

Note for Your Teacher-- Young and/or beginning students may not be ready toread the rhythm codes. Many students wil l be familiar with these songs and wil l notneed to read the rhythm codes. In any case, you have the options of ignoring therhythm codes, teaching them, or teaching the rhythm by rote. Many students will not

care about the rhythms, anyway. Most will just be happy to play from the easy notes-- and its fun to have the notes in attractive colors.

Until now, the notes that you have

learned to play from have been on

diagrams of the keyboard. The diagramshave made it as easy as possible to beginplaying the keyboard. Now you are readyto begin reading from key maps.

The maps look a lot like the diagrams but

take up a lot less space. You may find ituseful to compare the key map at theright wi th the diagrams that you arefamiliar with.

    Maps: Changes from the Diagrams

Size--The map is more compact. Thespaces between the vertical l inesstanding for the black keys are muchsmaller. The notes are smaller.

Colored Fill in the G and A Space

Omitted --The color is omitted from thesespaces on key maps. On this map forbeginners, the colored fill shows how

long to hold each sound. The color of thefill matches the color of the octave group

that the note is to be played in.

Vertical L ines--Used Exclusively for theBlack Keys. The only vertical lines in themap are the 5 lines standing for the 5

black keys of each octave group. (Linesfor the cracks between keys B/C and E/F

    are never shown on maps.)

Note Names Are the Notes for WhiteKeys. In this beginner's version, thenames of the notes are used as the actual

notes. Notes for the black keys remainround or oval.

    Song Text--The words and syllables

for the songs appear at the right ofthe corresponding notes.

Please Note: From now on, your music will show rhythm as well as

pitch. This way, you will be able to play music correctly even if youhave never heard it before. Learning to read musical time, which weusually call RHYTHM, is a major step in your education as a piano

player. The next group of lessons in this course have been designedto help you learn how to read and play the rhythm of the pieces thatyou will be playing.

Notes on key maps show you visually just how long to p lay a note. How long you hold a note is proportional to how long it is (vertically)on the printed page. A note that is twice as long as another note is tobe held twice as long (in time). in this beginner's version of the map,

the colored backgrounds of the notes show how long to ho ld thenotes.

Measures--On key maps, measures are separated by horizontalspaces (measure markers). Beats within the measures are marked

off by horizontal lines (beat markers). Each line (and the spacedirectly below it) stands for 1 beat of t ime. However, the space withina measure marker takes no time at all.

Note Length (Rhythm) --Note lengths are proportional to the time thatthey take. A note that stretches between two beat lines (the first

" lamb" in the song) is one beat long .

When two equal size notes take up one beat of space (" lit-tle" in thesong), each note is one-half beat long . The 2 notes for " Ma-ry"together also take up one beat of time.

A note that stretches across two beat spaces ("snow" at the end of thesong) is two beats long .

Basic Unit of Time--The basic unit of time on key maps is the beat. The

beats can be seen clearly on the maps merely by paying attention to thebeat lines that run across the entire musical staff.

When discussing musical time on maps, note length is expressed in beats.

Therefore, the answer to the question, "How long is the note?" will beexpressed as so many beats or as such and such a fraction of a beat.
