Dear Friends of PJA,

We are delighted to share the Portland Jewish Academy’s new annual report with you. We have created this report to celebrate our accomplishments, present a snapshot of the school’s health and well-being, and illustrate our stewardship of contributions and parent-provided tuition. This report is one small way we thank you, our generous parents, neighbors and friends, and showcase the very real impact your time, contributions and tuition make for our students.

Pie charts and statistics don’t tell the whole PJA story, so we designed this report to reflect our school’s vibrant warmth and boundless energy, which truly set us apart. One distinctive aspect of life at PJA is how our middot (values) are woven into the daily learning experience:

Limmud – Study Kavod – Respect Akharayut – Responsibility Kehillah – Community Hoda’ah – Appreciation Zehut – Jewish identity

These values are deeply and intentionally integrated into our approach, elevating the experiences and relationships we all have here. We have used these values throughout this report as a unifying theme, to help showcase all we’ve achieved over the past year. We are honored to partner with you to educate our community’s children. Together, we create Portland’s Jewish future.

B’shalom,

Edith Dorsen Lisa D. Horowitz Merrill HendinPresident, Board of Executive Director PrincipalDirectors

Responsibility for the world is a key value at PJA. Our students don’t just learn about responsibil-ity in the abstract: they practice it in the classroom and outside the school’s walls.

At PJA, responsibility is part of everyday life - older students read to their younger buddies, middle school students compost and everyone recycles!

Respect can be summed up with our “Kavod LOOP” – respect for learning, for ourselves, for oth-ers and for property. Staff model respectful behavior for our students and for each other. When PJA students and graduates go into the world, they impress others. Field trip chaperones and museum docents often remark that ours was the best group they’ve ever had!

“Part of being an educated person is being open-minded and accepting of other people regardless of their belief systems or anything else. PJA has been a unique opportunity for our family in that it is helping to instill this important life skill in our daughters and we are extremely thankful for that!” - Mary Reisch

Appreciation is expressed openly at PJA every day. Not only do we appreciate our many donors and support-ers, who sustain our school, we also appreciate the small gestures that make our school a warm and welcoming com-munity. Todah rabbah (thank you!) is a staple of life at PJA.

Study at PJA encompasses all of the subjects taught at other schools, along with Hebrew and Jewish studies. We are proud that students graduate from PJA with exceptionally good critical think-ing, writing, science and math skills. Local high schools, private and public, love to accept our graduates because they are so well prepared for school – and for life.

“Nothing pleases me more than having my son learn the values of Judaism at PJA.” - Sandy Nemer

Page 6: PJA Annual Report

PJA students are secure in their Jewish Identity. Celebrating Shabbat and holidays at school and at home is only part of forging a strong Jewish identity. That identity is solidified through study – role playing as an Israeli pioneer, for example, and through hands-on activities such a matzah and challah-making.

Community takes many forms – our warm parent community, a dedicated faculty, the MJCC and our broader community. We gather to celebrate the cycle of the Jewish year and celebrate good times and commemorate sad times together. We enjoy the arts and spend time outdoors, and learn and give back to our community together.
