Pizza (pronounced / pi ts/ (listen) or/ pi dz/ ; Italian: [ pit.tsa] ) is a world-popular dishofNeapolitan origin, made with an oven-baked, flat, generally round bread that is often
covered with tomatoes or a tomato-based sauce and cheese. Other toppings are added
according to region, culture, or personal preference.
Originating inNeapolitan cuisine, the dish has become popular in many different parts ofthe world. A shop or restaurant that primarily makes and sells pizzas is called a
"pizzeria". The phrases "pizza parlor", "pizza place" and "pizza shop" are used in theUnited States. The termpizza pie is dialectal, andpie is used for simplicity in some
contexts, such as among pizzeria staff.
Pizza in India
Pizza is a emerging fast food in Indian urban areas. With the arrival of branded pizza, it
has reached to many cities.[citation needed]
Pizza outlets serve pizzas with several Indian based toppings like Tandoori Chicken andPaneer. Indian pizzas are generally made more spicy as compared to their western
counterparts, to suit Indian taste. Along with Indian variations, more conventional pizzas
are also eaten.
Considered a peasant's meal in Italy for centuries we cannot say who
invented the very first pizza pie. Food historians agree that pizza like disheswere eaten by many peoples in the Mediterranean including the Greeks and
Egyptians.
However, modern pizza has been attributed to baker Raffaele Esposito ofNaples. In 1889, Esposito who owned a restaurant called the Pizzeria diPietro baked what he called "pizza" especially for the visit of Italian King
Umberto I and Queen Margherita.
The first pizzeria in North America was opened in 1905 by Gennaro Lombardi
at 53 1/3 Spring Street in New York City.
The first "Pizza Hut" a chain of pizza restaurants appeared in the United
States during the 1930s.
Frozen pizza was invented by Rose Totino.

Pizza Topping Trivia
Americans eat approximately 350 slices of pizza per second. And 36 percentof those pizza slices are pepperoni slices, making pepperoni the number onechoice among pizza toppings in the United States. However, in India pickledginger, minced mutton, and paneer cheese are the favorite toppings for pizza
slices. In Japan, Mayo Jaga (a combination of mayonnaise, potato andbacon), eel and squid are the favorites. Green peas rock Brazilian pizza shops
and Russians love red herring pizza.S
