  • INDIAN HANDICRAFTS INDUSTRYdefined simply as objects made by the skill of the hand and which carry a part of the creator as well as centuries of evolutionary tradition Crafts are an integral part in the life of an Indian artists create craft objects and they are considered as luxury items. Source of employment for a vast majority of the population, next to agriculture.

The Importance of handicrafts can be said to be twofold, cultural and economic The industry provides employment to over six million artisans (including those in carpet trade),

  • . The export earnings from Indian handicrafts industry for the period 1998-2OOO amounted to US$ 1.2 billion.Peetalnagari (City of Brass), Saharanpur for its wooden articles Ferozabad for Glass. The North Western state of Rajasthan has to offer the famous Jaipuri quilts, Bagru and Sanganer printed textiles and wooden and wrought iron furniture from Jodhpur. The coastal state of Gujarat comes with embroidered articles from Kutch. Narsapur in Andhra Pradesh is famous for its Lace and Lace goods.

  • Hand printed textiles including block and screen printing, batik, kalamkari (hand printing by pen) and bandhani (tie and die) are used in products ranging from bed-covers to sheets, dress material to upholstery.Embroidery is done too on leather, felt and velvet etc. Textile based handicrafts Clay, Metal and Jewellery:Brass, copper, bronze, bell metal are used for a variety of wares and in a variety of finishes. Scintillating ornaments are available in a wide range of patterns, styles and compositions. Made from precious metals, base metals, precious and semi-precious stones; these ornaments have traditional as well as modern styles.

    Woodwork:toys, furniture, decorative articles, etc. bearing the art and individuality of the craftsman. India is known particularly for its lacquered wood articles.

  • Stone Craft:The intricately carved stoneware made of marble, alabaster or soapstone, etc., inlaid with semiprecious stones carry on the heritage of Indian stone crafts. Glass and Ceramic:Glass and ceramic products are a fast upcoming segment in the handicrafts from India .The varied shapes of ceramic and glass in a number of colours, would appeal to Western aesthetics while retaining the Indian touch.

  • Role of export promotion council of handicrafts (EPCH) in Exports

    (EPCH) is the promotion organisation operating since 1986 within the export & import policy frame work, set up by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India for promotion of Exports of handicrafts from India. The basic objective of EPCH is to promote & develop the exports of Country. The main role of EPCH is to project India's image abroad as a reliable supplier of high quality handicrafts & gifts. More than 6000 handicraft's manufacturers & exporters are the members of EPCH.

  • Major functions of the council are :-To provide commercially useful information & assistance. To offer professional advise to exporters in areas such as: - Technology up gradation - Quality and Design improvements - Product Development and innovation. To organize visits of trade delegation to explore overseas market opportunity. To promote participation in trade fairs and exhibitions & organise buyer-seller meet. To organise Asias largest Handicrafts & Gifts Fair. To promote interaction between exporting community and Government. To provide reliable supplier of handicrafts to foreign buyers. To organise workshops, seminars, entrepreneurs development programmes and other awareness-cum-training programme. To disseminate information odds handicraft industry.

  • PROMOTION BY GOVT/ COUNCIL 1)The All India Handicrafts Board : The Board collects and disseminates information, arranges exhibitions, sponsors sales and study teams, and invites foreign buyers. The regional offices of the Board handle registration and process requests for any specific export promotion measures. 2) The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council : The council aims at providing facilities and incentives regarding the exports of pearls, precious and semiprecious stones, diamonds and synthetic stones; to assist in improving and modernizing of the jeweler craft of the country. 3)The Handloom Export Promotion Council : It superintends the export promotion of Indian Handlooms in the country. 4) The Handicrafts and Handlooms Export Corporation . It undertakes various export promotional and developmental measures such as publicity and Indian participation in foreign exhibitions, and invites reputed designers for advise and assistance. 5) The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade : Besides training courses for export executives, this Institute carries out surveys of various markets and publishes them.

  • 6) The Trade Development Authority of India : Handicrafts and garments are included in it's trade promotion activities among other items. It also has offices in New York, Frankfurt and Tokyo. Besides inviting buyers, it arranges buyer- seller meets in selected markets. 7) The Export Credit Gaurantee Corporation : It provides export credit intelligence and issues, covers against risks. 8) The Export Inspection Council : This Council has especially been set up to ensure the quality control and Pre- shipment Act. 9) The Federation of Indian Export Organisation : It is a non profit servicing institution, set up jointly by the Government, industry and trade. FIEO is an apex forum coordinating and supplimenting the insitutions. It also gives special attention to the export promotional activites of small sector including crafts. 10) The Trade Authority of India : It unifies policy direction, controls and implements programmes of India's participation in fairs and exhibitions, both in India and abroad. Handicrafts continue to recieve the special attention of the TFA.
