CALENDAR - Term 4. Week 8

Even though there are only three weeks to go until the end of the school year we certainly are not slowing down. Last Friday we held a White Ribbon Day Assembly run by both staff and students (led by Mr Johns) which raised aware-ness about a very important cause. The week before, we celebrated the sporting achievements of students in the school at the sports assembly with a special guest speaker Matt Lucas who is a Rugby Union Footballer for NSW Waratahs. There are still excursions, the film festival, the summer biathlon and other activities for different year groups booked in which we are looking forward to. All coming events are noted on the schools website and elsewhere in this newsletter. Year 8 The students who are going to Wet n Wild had their mandatory swim test last Friday afternoon. Appropriate behaviour and participation was evident. We are sure they are all looking forward to their day out at the water park on Friday 9 December. Year 10 In preparation for 2017 each faculty has planned out specific activities that will support students with their transition into senior school.

Once Stage 5 course work is complete classes may be slightly modified to prepare students for next year. This will be facilitated by the teachers, and students are expected to make the most of their lessons. Students going to the Year 10 formal on Wednesday December 7 must be at school at 6.15pm as the buses will leave at 6.30pm. After-wards we ask that parents are to be at the school ready to transport their child/ren home at the lat-est 11.30pm. Students should not be walking home that late at night. Year 12 The sign out process for year 12 is drawing to a close. If students have not signed out and returned all textbooks, they are encouraged to do so this week in order to receive their reference. All year 12’s are invited back for the morning tea on Friday 16 December to say their final goodbyes to the staff and celebrate their achievements.

Friday 25 November was White Ribbon Day, a very important day for the whole Pittwater High School Community. As a school, we firmly believe that violence against women, gender equality and respect between males and females are among the most important

social issues facing our country today. As many people are aware, White Ribbon is a worldwide campaign to end violence, abuse and discrimination against women. We recognise that men are also the victims of violence. However, statistics show that women are the victims in the majority of cases, which is why we are very committed to promoting the values of White Ribbon on this important day. We are proud to say that we are a White Ribbon School. Last Friday, all students and staff participated in a special White Ribbon assembly in the hall, where important issues around 'respect between genders' were discussed. Several students spoke magnificently and deserve a special mention. Noah Coopey, Pippa Pryor, Tiarni Bayes, Olivia Murray, Callum Hemsworth and Tiffany Kumar led the assembly and spoke to the whole school community about the importance of White Ribbon Day.

Jessica Gudmunson, Jackson Richards, David Macintyre-Jackson , Dylan Catterall , Seb Whiffen, Tom Watson and Tyger Cox performed a fantastic 'Beatles-inspired' musical performance that had the 'experienced' members of staff tapping their feet and reminiscing. Students and staff dressed up in 'all white' for the day and approximately $900 was raised for the Manly Women's Shelter. Thank you to all students, parents and staff who donated a fantastic array of cookies and cakes for our cake stall, which contributed to the overall sum of money raised. Additionally, the school invested in 100 helium balloons and 545 metres of white ribbon, enabling all members of the school community to be actively involved in deco-rating the school's front fence to show our support and solidarity towards the White Ribbon cause. A big thank you to "Let's Party with Balloons" at 1741 Pittwater Road for their support with the

day's activities.

Pittwater High School hosted a Multicultural Exchange Day in collaboration with Mahboba’s Promise on Afghan culture and global empathy. It was an exciting networking day which involve schools coming together from across the north-ern beaches and other parts of Sydney to learn about Afghan traditions in an array of interactive cultural activities. There was traditional dance, music, calligraphy, henna, activities and Afghan food, made by our wonderful Hospitality students. There were also many speakers on the day to engage, motivate and challenge the students to think openly, and to commit to action that will have a positive impact on their local and international community. Students were en-couraged to think of issues larger than that which immediately affects them, and together as a group decide how to make positive changes to make a difference around the world. Well done Madelaine, Poppy, Kate, Natania, Raheli, Mia, Bettina, Zoe, Isabella, Jessica, Zac, Liam, Jacob, Claudia, Jordyn, Ek, Harry, Perri, Laura, Jenzy, Anton, Chanel, Jarrah, Kira, Ashley, Alice and Ewan for his filming on the day. In the late 21st Century, a small band of bumpkins

called Year 10 Drama presented a modernised

version of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer

Night’s Dream” for Year 7 audiences in the PHS

Performance Space.

After four months of rehearsal, arguments and

sluggish progress, it came together under the pres-

sure of the theatre gods. This merry mix-up of

misplaced love eventually allowed the audience to

enjoy Shakespeare’s most popular comedy in a

comfortable setting with familiar faces and plenty

of laughs.

With costume design by Jennifer White and Tia

Killick and stage and lighting design by

Jazmyn-Anne Quince, the play was visually spectac-

ular and accentuated the skills of the talented

performers. Led by the powerful performances of

King Theseus (Josh Bennett) and Queen Hippolyta

(Tiffany Kumar), the cast shone under the bright

lights.

The tangled lovers (Nick Caldwell, Olivia Kemp,

Ryan Sinclair and Elise van Mierlo) intertwined with

the faeries of the forest world (Zac Stanning, Emily

Fogarty, Natasha Elliott, Toby Jones, Micah

Lihachov, Rubi English, Tamika O’Brien and

Rebecca Sharples), and the mechanicals (Nathan

Roach, Rhiannon Trowbridge, Lovisa Ferguson,

Danielle Todd, Lucy Birrell and Penny Blunsden)

provided the comic relief.

Considering the youth of these performers, the

quality was impressive. We thought it fitting that

this play was performed by children, as it was one

of the most popular Elizabethan conventions of the

time. It was a pleasure to direct such a group of

promising and aspiring young thespians, who learnt

their parts (lest they forgot their lines) “got” their

costumes, and who may one day make their

fortune in the duke’s castle. And thus, we bid you

adieu.

CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS Drama – All students are required to have their BYOD at each lesson as content is being uploaded to Google Classroom. Scripts are being written, collaboratively edited and shared, every lesson on computer. There is an expectation that all students take notes on

their BYOD every lesson and that Log Books are submitted electronically.

Music – Students are expected to have their BYOD at every music lesson. All elective students and the year 7 performance class have been registered for an online composition program – noteflight. All students access this via the individual class’ Google Classroom site. All elective students are expected to write their practical goals and reflections on their BYOD and complete and submit their composition portfolios electronically. Musicology research is also web based.

Visual Arts – All Visual Art students are expected to bring their BYOD to each lesson. Research on various artists, Visual Art periods and art works is web based and assignments are submitted electronically. BYOD is used widely for gaining visual refer-ence material. All Visual Art classes have a Google Classroom where lesson notes and assignments can be found. Senior theory lesson notes are expected to be written on the student’s BYOD.

ENGLISH Since 2015 the English faculty has endeavoured to be paperless. Tasks and supporting resources and when possible texts are digitally loaded on each Year Group's Edmodo platform. Teach-ers also often employ email and Google Classroom to communicate with students and enable absent students to view missed work.

For some units specific websites have been created to deliver an extensive range of audiovisual resources and tasks and Click-view is actively employed in most units. In alignment with our syllabus requirements some tasks are multimodal and students require devices to work on these.

While we still focus on handwritten bookwork students are required to use devices in all lessons to either access or produce materials.

PE/HEALTH/PD

Students in PDHPE classes this term have utilised their devices to enrich their learning in a wide variety of classroom activities. Year 7 · Researching definitions relating to risk taking, consequences and decision making. · Researching the meaning of the words: ’Impatience’ and ‘impulsiveness’ and examples of how they may impact risky situations. · Accessing http://www.abc.net.au to examine road trauma accidents and their causes. · Researching what is being done by schools and Governments to address the issue of drug use in society. · Visiting http://www.quit.org.au/criticschoice/default.asp to watch the show reel of anti-smoking advertisements from around the world – and voting online for the ones they feel were the most effective. · Exploring the meaning of ‘assertiveness’ and researching a local organisation that provides support to people in a risk situation. Year 8 · Exploring definitions of ‘mental wellbeing’. · Researching different types of food advertisements. · Accessing the Dieticians Association of Australia website http://daa.asn.au to take the Smart Eating Quiz. · Researching the use of food in celebrations in a culture of your choice. · Researching different types of health care services available. · Creating a brochure/pamphlet/poster that either critiques or informs the reader of a health product or service Year 9 · Researching the meaning of the word ‘consent’. · Visiting Family Planning NSW website https://www.fpnsw.org.au to research methods of contraception. · Researching issues around mental health at https://www.beyondblue.org.au/. BYOD use in Year 9 Textiles During term 4 the Textiles Technology class is making a paper pattern so students were using their BYOD device to source pattern templates and using their drawing tools to simulate a paper pattern.

Year 9 has had a great first half of term 4 learning about electricity. They have experimented with making circuits,

understanding and calculating current, voltage and resistance, making (unsuccessful) fruit batteries and exploring

insulators and conductors. However, the most fun was had exploring static electricity. Harry Potter/Allen demon-

strated the van der Graff generator producing mini lightning bolts with his ‘wand’ whilst others used balloons to

demonstrate the attractive properties of static electricity, ‘sticking’ the balloons to the ceilings, walls, hair and small

pieces of paper.

This year the Year 11 Construction class has worked hard to design, build and manage a new outdoor learning space for Construction classes to be held at. This new purpose built area has enabled students to be removed from the Timber workshops and placed into a “worksite” like space to develop and build their construction projects. This greater space will further enable students to build large construction framing projects such as dog kennels and cubby houses in the near future.

We have been lucky enough to get a range of new 18v Makita tools as well as a Makita track saw to give the students authentic learning experiences as such in the construction workplace environment. Students who gain competency in all of their assessments will achieve a TAFE Cert II in Construction at the conclu-sion of their Higher School Certificate.

The Pittwater High P&C Social Committee organised a very successful sausage sizzle to support the Newport Primary school concerts which were held in our school hall on November 15 and 17. The weather was sunny and warm, and happy parents lined up to buy sausage sandwiches, chips and drinks. In fact, the line was so long at times that the committee had to work at double time to keep up with demand! Excited primary school students mingled in their costumes and everyone enjoyed the back-ground instrumentals by our Pittwater High musicians.

Money raised from this event will be allocated to school projects which have been tabled at the P&C meetings. If you'd like to be involved in the P&C, or the social committee, please email P&C President [email protected] for further details.

Year 8 HSIE at Dobroyd Head and North Head Year 8 History and Geography students travelled to Arabanoo Lookout at Dobroyd Head and North Head on Friday 28 October. History students attended the field trip run by NPWS ‘Aboriginal culture: expanding contacts Arabanoo lookout’ to learn about Aboriginal culture from pre-colonisation to today and the impact of European contact on the Aboriginal peoples. Activities included listening to a description of the main features of Australia’s Aboriginal culture prior to colonization; recognising the results of colonization on Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples to 1900; learning how Aboriginal children were educated in Aboriginal society through Aboriginal games and being taught about different food sources and how to make and use different weapons.

Geography students experienced a field trip to North Head Sanctuary to learn about Threatened Habitats such as the Long-nosed bandicoot, the Little Penguin, and the Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub. EcoXplore ran a number of educa-tional and ‘fun’ activities for the students which included soil sample testing to determine the pH level required for plant species to survive and building bandicoot nests to protect this endangered species. In addition, students identi-fied certain plant species from photographic charts. Highlights were exploring the Hanging Swamp and learning about how the area of North Head has been used over time by Indigenous Australians, the Australian Army during World War 2 and how the Sydney Harbour Trust is regenerating and protecting the environment today. Year 7 History classes 7E and 7P visited the Museum of Ancient Cultures at Macquarie University on Thursday 10 November. Students were presented with an overview of Ancient Egypt by museum staff and then examined artefacts from civilisations such as Egypt in a ‘hands-on’ session. One of the highlights was ‘dressing up’ students in a Spartan battle costume from Ancient Greece. Some student comments from the excursion: “We actually saw REAL artefacts from Ancient Cultures”. “I found the hands-on part quite engaging and it taught me how Ancient Egyptians lived” . “This excursion provided us with many informative slides as well as extremely inter-esting and interactive artefacts which really took the whole experience to a new level”. HSC Economics goes to the RBA! Year 12 Economics attended the Reserve Bank of Australia on Wednesday 23 November. Students were presented with information on Monetary Policy and recent global economic developments by an economist from the bank. This session provided invaluable information for the study of HSC Economics. A recent graduate spoke to the students about her role in the Reserve Bank in areas such as examining developments in the property and labour markets in the Chinese economy and its influence on the Australian economy; as well as investigating the implica-tions of digital currency such as Bitcoin and how in time, consumers will be using mobile wallets (digital currency). One of the highlights of the visit was a ‘hands-on’ presentation on bank notes. Students were given a detailed explanation of how the new $5.00 note has been produced and the security features embedded in each note.

At the conclusion of the presentation students toured the Reserve Bank muse-um to gain an understanding of how Australian currency has evolved since the introduction of decimal currency on the 14 February, 1966 (‘back in the day’) as my students reminded me. Following a lunch break in Pitt Street, the students visited the Australian Stock Exchange to examine the ‘leader board’ which showed the value of stocks the exchange rate and the trends in commodity prices. O n Tuesday 22 November, Year 9 Child Studies had their assignment due. Yes I know, it doesn’t sound very interesting

but it was the most exciting and memorable assignment I have ever done. This assignment had nothing to do with research or creative writing; it was to design and create a party aged for kids around 1-5 years. We buddied up with partners and worked on making invitations, decorations and food preparation etc during the end of term 3 and the beginning of term 4. Myself and Jess Glading (who was my partner) decided on making our party theme “Pirates and Princesses” so we could cater for both genders. Time flied, holidays had past and we only had 10 weeks left. Which meant only 7 weeks until our kid’s birthday parties were due. A few weeks had past and invitations had been sent out; Now starting to think about food and party decora-tions. Jess and I decided to make fairy fruit wands, which were skewers that were filled with grapes and strawberries and topped with a piece of pineapple that was shaped in star. We also made pink cupcakes topped with sprinkles and Star jam sandwiches. The 22 had come past like the blink of an eye and all the girls were so excited for the party.

We all went in at Lunch 1 (Recess) and started to prepare our food, set out our decorations and get ready for our guests to arrive. I turn around to see a room full of guests and all their divine kids. All the kids looked like they were having a ball play-ing games such as pass the pastel and doing colouring in’s. Everyone loved the food and was demolished in a flash. Some of the positives out of this assignment is that everyone had an amazing time. I don’t think their was anyone who didn’t like the assignment! One of the negatives would be the time management. I think everyone was rushing to get things on the table before the guests arrived. One of the things that interested me was that majority of the kids were female.

I would like to send out a big thankyou to Mrs Roulston for your continuous effort throughout this year. I’d also like to say a big thankyou to the ladies down in the kitchen for being so supportive with the assignment. I can’t wait to see what year 10 Child Studies brings me.

The Year 9 Child Studies Class Party was an excel-lent experience that I took away from, with so much more knowledge and inspiration. There was so much food for everyone to enjoy and water to keep hydrated.

My partner was Jessica, we were very organised with everything that we were bringing and doing on the day. I brought grapes, pineapple and straw-berries to make the fruit wands. Jess brought cup-cakes and a loaf of bread to make jam sandwiches. The party was very well decorated between the class. Our theme was Princess Verses Pirates; we could have portrayed this clearer with themed napkins and balloons however nobody noticed or became fazed. The colouring in was a massive hit, very successful, the kids really enjoyed them, it was suitable for majority of the guests.

There wasn’t any music or healthy snacks for the adults and the day could have been more organised leaving us with more time to prepare for the guests.

It was very interesting to see several age groups who are going through different stages of life come together and create such a great, enjoyable atmos-phere for all.

Overall, the party was brilliant, although could have been more prepared, the organisation brought people together and everyone walked away with a smile on their face and a full stomach.

T he year 7 Technology Mandatory Class use their BYOD’s and ICT’s throughout the Design component

of the subject. During the Australian Designer assignment, students design and produce a lamp that

is inspired by the designed they selected. They then use their BYOD to take a photo of their lamp and

included it in their E folio Assignment submission. Harrison Finlay created an amazing Ford lamp inspired

by his chosen Australian designer, Todd Willing. Harrison’s lamp can be seen bellow.

T he students then work on the Illuminate Design Project where they work through the design process

and produce a lamp made from an A4 polypropylene sheet. They use their BOYD to take photos of

their initial designs and prototypes to document the design process. They use the internet to conduct

research to get ideas and inspiration for their own personal designer lamp. They then use a program

called Adobe Illustrator to produce their design and then the schools laser cutter to make the lamps.

Some examples of the students prototypes can be seen bellow.

must then be taken home with a parent. Mrs Roulston will not let students walk home that late at night.

Please contact Mrs Roulston by December 1 if you want to make any changes to these arrangements.

Thanks Mrs Roulston
