UNEMPLOYMENT RATES

Page 10: Pittsburgh vs. New York

Excluding unemployment rate statistics, it appears that New York will have more opportunities for recent college graduates. New York has a larger population than Pittsburgh, but of this population, only 16.7% of people aged 18-24 have a bachelor’s degree or higher. A recent college graduate (aged 21-24) would have an advantage in the job market over similarly-aged people without a bachelor’s degree. New York also has a higher median income (for all age groups) than Pittsburgh.

I was surprised by the diff erence in population between Pittsburgh and New York. I knew New York was more populated than Pittsburgh, but I had no idea how great the gap was.

I was also surprised by Pittsburgh’s lack of diversity. While at least 0.1% (about 8,700) of New Yorkers are of Native Hawaiian or other Pacifi c Islander descent, Pittsburgh’s population contains zero Native Hawaiians or other Pacifi c Islanders.
