They owe a ton of credit for that record to goalie Marc-AndreFleury, who has played even better through the first nine games this season than last year, when he was the team’s MVP and an NHLAll-Star.Fleury turned away 33 of 34 shots against the Capitals – the third time in four outings he’s made at least 31 saves. Fleury has startedeach of the first nine games of the season – the second-longest such streak of his career. The only time he started more consecutivegames at the outset of a season was 2006-07 when he started the first 11 games.Fleury has given up just nine goals his last six starts, going 5-1 during that stretch. He’s expected to get a well-earned breather tonightin favor of backup Jeff Zatkoff.

BEST STARTThrough three weeks the Penguins are off to the best defensive start in club history, as Pittsburgh’s current 1.88 goal-against averageis the lowest mark posted in October in franchise history. Below is a look at the lowest team goals-against averages posted by thePenguins in the month of October: Year                  GAA2015-16             1.882011-12             2.082009-10             2.211971-72             2.252008-09             2.27 During its 0-3 start to the season, the Penguins allowed eight goals against. Since then, Pittsburgh has given up a total of just ninegoals while winning five of its last six contests. The Penguins’ 1.50 goals-against average since Oct. 15 ranks third (tied) in the NHL: Team                GAALos Angeles       1.00Chicago             1.40Pittsburgh        1.50NY Rangers       1.50 KESSEL, MALKIN DO IT AGAINPhil Kessel and Evgeni Malkin have skated in two games together. Kessel has scored the game-winning goal off primary assists fromMalkin in both contests.Last night, Kessel’s game-winning marker came just 1:57 after Beau Bennett had tied the score at 1-1 early in the third period. Kesselleads the Penguins in goals (4) and shots (32) heading into tonight.Kessel and Malkin are two of the 16 NHL players that have tallied a pair of game-winning goals thus far this season.Last Saturday night against Nashville, the duio combined for the overtime, game-winning goal when Malkin helped set up Kessel, whodid the rest, skating through the Nashville defense before putting home his own rebound behind Pekka Rinne. The goal was the fourth career overtime tally for Kessel, and his first since Oct. 14, 2014 against the Colorado Avalanche when heplayed for Toronto. It was the 41st career game-winning marker – his first such tally with Pittsburgh – for Kessel. BEAU-TIFULHe’s only played in four games due to injury, but Beau Bennett has proven in a short period to be one of the Penguins’ top offensivethreats this year. His goal yesterday not only jump-started the offense, but it marked his second-straight game (not an official streak dueto games missed because of injury) he’s found the back of the net.Bennett’s tally against Washington came in a milestone contest for him – his 100th career regular-season appearance.Bennett’s offensive outburst began back in training camp, when he tied Phil Kessel for the team lead with three goals in the preseason. LETANG PLAYS 500TH NHL GAMELast night against the Capitals, Penguins blueliner Kris Letang became just the fourth defenseman in franchise history to play in 500games with the team, joining Brooks Orpik (703 games), Ron Stackhouse (621) and Dave Burrows (573).Letang sits 11 points shy of becoming just the fifth blueliner in club history to record 300 points with the team, which would place himalongside Paul Coffey (440 points), Stackhouse (343), Randy Carlyle (323) and Larry Murphy (301).Against the Capitals, Letang paced Pittsburgh with eight shot attempts (finished with 3 official shots on goal). THIS N’ AT*Captain Sidney Crosby has at least one point in 25 of 28 career meetings against the Sabres. When Buffalo held him scoreless in theseason finale last year, it ended a 19-game point streak against the Sabres (10G-26A-36PTS).*This will be Jeff Zatkoff’s first-career start against the Sabres. It’s his first NHL start since April 13, 2014 against the Ottawa Senatorsat CONSOL Energy Center.*This is the first time back coaching in Pittsburgh for Buffalo head coach Dan Bylsma. In five-plus seasons with Pittsburgh from 2009-14, Bylsma established franchise records for regular-season wins (252), playoff wins (43) and he won the Jack Adams Award as theNHL’s most outstanding coach in 2010-11. That year, Sidney Crosby (41 games missed), Evgeni Malkin (39) and Jordan Staal (39)all missed significant action. When Pittsburgh won the Cup in ’09, Bylsma directed the club to an 18-3-4 finish in 25 games behind thebench, helping the club jump from 10th place at his arrival to fourth by season’s end.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: PENGUINS vs. CAPITALS*Pittsburgh went 3-for-3 on the PK, improving to 17-for-18 (94.4%) over the last five games.*It won’t go down as an official third-period comeback since the Penguins weren’t down at the beginning of the final frame, butPittsburgh didn’t blink when it found itself down 1-0 less than two minutes into the third period, scoring twice in 1:57 seconds to take thelead for good.*Nick Bonino registered his first multiple-point game with Pittsburgh (1G-1A). He has three points (2G-1A) over his last three games.*Only Sidney Crosby (18:21 minutes) logged more ice time than Bonino’s 18:03 among Pittsburgh forwards. In addition to his points,Bonino blocked a team-high four shots, the third-highest single-game total of his career.*Bonino has gone 58-36 (61.7%) on faceoffs his last five games.*The 24:19 minutes played by Kris Letang was his lowest total of the year.*David Perron’s assist on Phil Kessel’s goal was his first point of the year. LONEY HELPS WBS WIN ITS 5TH-STRAIGHTPittsburgh native Ty Loney, playing in just his second AHL game this year for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, collected two assists as thePenguins won their fifth-straight game yesterday, 4-3, against Binghamton. Tyler Biggs, making his WBS debut, scored a goal and anassist. Loney and Biggs combined to set up J-S Dea’s game-winning goal midway through the third period. Rookie Dominik Simonscored again, giving him a team-leading (tied) eight points (3G-5A). Tristan Jarry is now 2-0, allowing only four goals in those contests. TEAM LEADERSShots:Kessel, 32Letang, 28Crosby, 27 Hits:ForwardsKunitz, 34Hornqvist, 30Perron, 28 D-MenLovejoy, 19Letang, 14Cole, 14 Blocked Shots:D-MenCole, 26 Letang, 14Lovejoy, 11Maatta, 11Scuderi, 11 ForwardsKunitz, 7Malkin, 7Bonino, 7 Faceoff Percentage:Bonino, 56.4%(84-65)Crosby, 54.9% (118-97)Cullen, 50.7% (38-37) DID YOU KNOW…Pittsburgh’s PK is quietly killing off penalties at a higher clip this year (86.2%) than even last year (84.8%) when the PK finished third inthe NHL.
