The next regularly scheduled meeting of the PAC is set for Friday, May 7, 2010 at Peter’s Place in Bridgeville. This is not our usual haunt to meet, but Franco’s was not available and we had to locate another venue. Our Social Chairman, Bro. Joe Alessandro went on a search for a location that would provide us with a private room as well as one that would accept our price of $25 (all inclusive other than liquor). I am told that Peter’s Place is quite nice and the food is good. For all of you who have never ventured to Bridgeville, here are the directions: Peter’s Place is located at 1199 Washington Pike (Rt. PA 50), Bridgeville, PA. Take the Parkway West to the I-79 South (Washington) Exit, take the Kirwan Heights exit. At the light at the end of the exit, make a right onto Rt. 50. Travel about ¼ mile and look for Peter’s Place on the right hand side of the road. If you live in the South Hills, you can take any of those roads (Boyce, Bower Hill, Cochran, Painter’s Run) which go annual gathering that generally draws brothers from 8 different decades to Rt. 50 and make your way to Bridgeville. This is a one time deal as the PAC will return to Franco’s in June. The evening begins at 7:00 pm with a cash bar and general conversation amongst the brothers. This portion of the evening is pep- pered with many tales and tall tales from the either the acute or ob- tuse (at times both) minds and mouths of a number of brothers who have developed reputations over a number of years as being worthy of the O’ Henry Award. For those of you who failed your American Lit- erature course, he is the great American short story writer. A buffet style dinner will be served at 7:30 pm beginning with a salad, there will be chicken, fish and beef, vegetable, side of pasta, rolls and non alcoholic beverage. Sounds like a feast, doesn’t it? The business meeting will follow at about 8:30 pm. There is no speaker scheduled for the meeting. Following the meeting, the broth- ers are encouraged to remain for more socializing and story-telling.

So, what do you say brother? We would love to see you. There is no need to make a reservation. All you have to do is show up and share the brotherhood while you enjoy a fine meal. See you there! WE THANK YOU VERY MUCH: The numbers keep elevating. Over the past month (as of April 15, 2010), the PAC has gone from 142 to 163 paid members for 2010. Guide your eyes to left hand column and you will find the complete list. Last year we had 192 paid members. We reached our all time high of 214 paid members in 2006. The PAC extends a large thank you to the following brothers who were added to the list this past month: Robert Calabro (from Eastern PA), Ned Cash, Joe Clement (from NY), Gary DiCroce, Nick DiMaggio, Nick Franki (from NY), Ron gala, Al Panza, Doug Spoto (from NY), Dan Thomas (from Youngs-town), Ross Alessandro, Fred Bovoso (from Del.), Dr. Phil Buzzelli, Mike Cucchiara, Charles Fiore (from NY), Jay McDonough, Ron W. Repak (from Johnstown), Ron N. Repak (from Johnstown), Pete Sam-martino, Ken Selvaggi (from Alabama), and Joe Thomas. If you paid after April 15, 2010, your name will appear next month. As you can see, brothers in the PAC come from many different areas of the USA. Wow, that is one impressive list of brothers. The PAC is continuing to solicit dues for 2010. If you do not find your name in the left hand column, included with this letter is a payment form which we hope you will use to pay your 2010 dues. Just write out that check in the amount of $25 ($35 if making a voluntary $10 contribution to the PAC Kleos Fund) and mail it to Bro. Calvin Shipley, 3985 Re-maley Road, Murrysville, PA 15668. AWARDS BANQUET RECAP: On April 9, 2010, there were 38 alumni brothers, 16 under-graduate brothers and 4 guests who ventured to Rockefeller’s Grille in Kennedy Township to pay homage to the recipients of our Out-standing Alumnus, Outstanding Undergraduate and Adam DiVincenzo Award winners for this year. The PAC honored Bro. Chris Shipley, PSI’99, with its Out-standing Alumnus Award and it was richly deserved. Bro. Chris has been active with the PAC since his graduation from DU in 2001. He has served as a driving force on our Alumni Advisory Board to PSI Chapter which has gone from one of the worst Fraternities to the best Fraternity on the DU campus over the past 5 years. Chris also is our current Recording Secretary and he produces the most complete min-utes ever seen in the history of the PAC. Chris was honored to have his father, our own Bro. Cal Shipley, his brother, Matt Shipley, his ma-ternal grandfather, William Normile, a maternal uncle, William Normile, and his father-in-law (sorry, I did not get the name) present for the proceedings. Bro. Cal did a lukewarm roast of his son. He refrained from burning him to a Chris(p). This year’s Outstanding Undergraduate Award was bestowed upon Bro. Nick Bell, PSI’08, the son of our own Bro. Joe Bell. Bro.

Nick is an extremely active man on the DU campus both with APD and the University. He is a very talented singer and organizer. At PSI, he has been the lead in their Carnival Show as well as a Valentine Ball Chair-man. We do not normally roast the winner of this award, thus only good things were said about Nick by Bro. Chris Shipley and Bro. Joe Bell. The recipient of this year’s Adm DiVincenzo Award was Bro. Tony Sallo, PSI’63. Sadly Bro Sallo could not be present for the Banquet as he had made prior arrangements to do Spring Skiing in Colorado. Bro. Rex Gatto, PSI’67, spoke of Tony’s love of the Fraternity as well as his active involvement in the Edgewood Community. We hope to present the plaque to Tony at our June, 2010 meeting. This was a very fine evening and the PAC extends a huge thank you to Chairman, Bro. Ross Alessandro, PSI’95, for his hard work and excellent efforts in making this a night to remember for our honorees. The brotherhood was effusive, the brothers were resplendent and loqua-cious, the food was sumptuous, and the speeches were laconic. There were brothers from eight (8) decades represented at the Dinner with Bro. Tony Scotti, NU’42, as the elder statesman and a cou-ple of recently inducted undergraduates (sorry, I do not have the names) as the neophytes. As The Four Seasons would put it, “Oh What A Night.” SOCIALLY SPEAKING: The PAC will return to Franco’s in Dormont for the June 4, 2010 monthly meeting. Our Social Chairman, Bro. Joe Alessandro, has selected Saturday, July 17, 2010 as the day that the PAC will be attending a baseball game this summer at beautiful PNC Park. It just happens to be Italian Day as well as Fireworks Night at the Park. Tickets are available for $20 each and are located in the Pirates Cove on the second level down the right field line. There are 30 tickets available and they will be sold on a first come first served basis. Contact Joe at [email protected] or call him at 412-498-1184 to reserve a ticket. Play Ball! The Annual PAC Golf Tourney, which we hope will be the 2nd An-nual Paul J. Sciullo, Jr. Memorial Classic, will be held in the summer. The PAC is currently trying to get a chairman and a committee together to coordinate the event. If you can help, please call Bro. Tony Williams at 412-429-0908 or email to [email protected] The 5th Annual PAC Bocce Tourney will be on August 14, 2010 at the home of Bro. Rod and Kathy Belsky. Bro. Pete Iole and Bro. Paul Fabrizio (known as The Saints) will be defending their title. This fun event has seen an increase in attendance each year and Bro. Rod hopes the trend continues. There were 14 brothers and 9 wives present last year. The more the merrier Bro. Rod says. There is a new event that has been placed on the PAC calendar this year. The PAC will be sponsoring an Alumni reception at Duquesne University on Oct. 2, 2010 as part of the University’s Homecoming Week-end. We will meet in Bayer Hall around 6:00 pm after a Mass in the Uni-versity Chapel. Circle this date on your calendar as it plans to be a great time.

The Annual Dinner Dance will be held on Oct. 16, 2010 at the Club at Nevillewood. The PAC has booked Bro. Vito DiSalvo and We Three for the evening’s entertainment. The Annual Christmas Dinner Celebration will be on December 20, 2010 at Minutello’s Restaurant. Come and spread some holiday cheer with your fraternity family. As you can see, the PAC has a varied social calendar to fit all tastes. We hope you will make the PAC a part of your social life. Details of social events will be up-dated in the monthly newsletter. GIVE THE FRATERNITY HANDCLAP TO PSI CHAPTER: Brothers, it is no secret that most of our members are graduates of DU and we were initi-ated into Alpha Phi Delta at PSI Chapter. Well, here is some information in which you can take great pride. About 5 years ago, PSI chapter was in dire straights. There was very little leader-ship in the chapter, the brothers did not know how to run a meeting, and they were virtually ab-sent from campus activities. The PAC became aware of the problems and instituted an Advi-sory Board of Alumni brothers to help oversee the chapter and to get them pointed in the right direction. After a few bumps in the road, like a University suspension from social activities and a ban on pledging a couple of years ago, PSI Chapter at Duquesne University has come full circle. Bro. Leon Panella and lovely wife, Karen, Bro. Jim Miller and lovely wife, Joy, Bro. Ross Alessandro and Bro. Rex Gatto along with a large contingent of undergraduate brothers were in attendance at the recent Greek Awards Banquet held on April 18, 2010, where PSI took away the most honors of any group on campus. They took the following awards: Most Im-proved Fraternity Scholarship Award for their overall raise in QPA; Outstanding Chapter Com-munity Service; the James O’Day Carnival Show of the Year; 3rd place in Greek Week overall competition; 1st place in Greek Sing; Bro. Nick Bell was honored as Fraternity Man of the Year; the Chapter Advisor, Bridgett Szivos was honored as the Advisor of the Year; and, to top it off, the President’s Cup as the Top Fraternity on Campus. Words can not express the pride we feel for this current group of undergraduates at PSI Chapter. The PAC extends a huge thank you to: our Alumni Advisory Board of Bro. Leon Panella, Bro. Chris Shipley, Bro. Chris Marrone, Bro. Ned Cash and Bro. Ross Alessandro for their leadership and guidance to the Chapter; Bridgett Szivos for her unselfish efforts in guiding the Chapter towards the right direction; the University Administration, particularly Fr. Sean Hogan, for the patience and fortitude in seeing the Chapter through some hard times; and, most importantly of all, the undergraduate brothers at PSI for their gargantuan efforts in bringing PSI back to prominence at DU. Fantastic Job! OTHER DISTRICT NEWS: Our new District Governor, Bro. Jim Miller, has been very busy since his appointment only 2 months ago. He has participated in three (3) initiations: 10 new undergraduate members and 1 graduate member on Mar. 14, 2010 at PSI at DU; 5 new undergraduate members at Beta Theta at Steubenville on April 23, 2010 where they only had 3 remaining brothers; 8 new undergraduate members at Beta Rho at Gannon on April 25, 2010; and a scheduled initiation at Beta Omicron at Youngstown on May 9, 2010. Bro. Miller also chaired a District Leadership Conference on the campus of DU on March 20,2010 and a District Meeting which followed. The PAC extends a large thank you to Bro. Miller for his activity. He has jumped into his new position head first. For those of you who have not seen Jim in awhile, he is down to 168 pounds and looking fabulous. The Western PA District of Alpha Phi Delta is in the best shape it has seen for a number of years. PSI is back on top, Gannon is growing and is one of the top fraternities on campus, Steubenville is fighting back after a number of years of lethargy, and, Youngstown, with the as-sistance of the YAC, is a prominent fraternity on their campus. Most of the undergraduates will

Pittsburgh Alumni Club

Page 5

be leaving their respective Universities in a week or two for their summer break and the PAC wishes them a safe and prosperous summer. Hopefully, they will return in the Fall with the same enthusiasm which they demonstrated this past year. NATIONAL NEWS: There is some great news coming out of the National Office as the fraternity initiated over 300 new brothers this past year. This is the largest number of initiates in a long time and all of the chapters are to be congratulated for their untiring efforts in growing their numbers. For a number of years, at least one Chapter, if not more, was deactivated by the National Council due to lack of members. At this year’s meeting there were no chapters deactivated. It may be too soon to declare that happy days are here again, but we are headed in the right direction. It may seem a long way off, but it is not too early to put it on your calendars. The Annual Summer Convention is scheduled for Aug. 5-8, 2010 at the Split Rock Resort in Lake Har-mony, PA. This is in the Pocono region and the resort has all the amenities necessary for the Fraternity to have a great time. The Chairman, Brother John Russo, has completed all the de-tails and with the help of many committee members, he is looking for a very successful event. Please refer to the enclosed flyer for the details on this fine event. FOUNDATION NEWS – KLEOS, SCHOLARSHIP, CREDIT CARD: This year, at the Summer Convention, the Scholarship Division of Alpha Phi Delta Foun-dation will be awarding about 33 scholarships to deserving students. The awards will total about $26,500, which is the interest accrued from the monies invested (generally in safe bond funds). A triple scholarship amounting to about $1,500 value will be given in the PAC’s name at the Summer Convention to a worthy candidate. Eligible students must either be a brother in the Fraternity or be a relative of a Fraternity Brother and they must have completed 2 grading peri-ods in college. Scholarship applications are now available at www.apdscholarship.org If you have a child or a relative attending college, why not log onto the site and get the application. Filling it out is fairly easy. The deadline for applications is May 31, 2010 and a student must have completed one year of schooling to apply. The General Division of the Alpha Phi Delta Foundation currently funds the total cost of the printing and mailing of the three editions of the Kleos on a yearly basis and it funds various Leadership Conferences that are held by the Fraternity to educate the members in risk man-agement, financial affairs, academic excellence and brotherhood. The PAC has contributed over $19,000 to the Kleos Fund. We will continue to collect funds for this venture until we reach our goal of $30,000 so that at least one page of every edition of the Kleos that is published will have been donated by the PAC. The Kleos archives are now available on the web and they go back to 1929. They make for great reading. Go to www.apdfoundation.org and enjoy.

So, where do you fit into this picture? You can have a Scholarship given in your name on a yearly basis with a $10,000 donation to the Scholarship Fund. You can have a one page in one Kleos on a yearly basis designated in your name for a $10,000 donation to the Kleos Fund. If you would like to start a fund in your name or as a memorial to your family, you can do so by sending a check to Bro. Tony Carfang, 9248 Ridgeway Avenue, Evanston, IL 60203. Another way of supporting the Foundation is through the use of the Alpha Phi Delta Credit Card from Bank of America. You may find this hard to believe, but out of over 11,000 good addresses for brothers, we only have about 230 Credit Cards in the hands of brothers. How can it be? These are World Points cards and you get a point for each dollar spent. The Foundation gets 20 basis points for each dollar spent. Also, if you go online to get the card, the Foundation gets $40 for each card as long as you make at least one purchase and pay your

Pittsburgh Alumni Club

Page 6

bill. How can you go wrong? Go to www.apdscholarship.org for an application. Don’t leave home without it! THE BROTHERHOOD ETERNAL: One of our elder statesmen, Bro. Ed Nicholas, NU’32, passed away on April 12, 2010 at his home in Tarpon Springs, FL. Bro. Ed had a career as a high school civics teacher and then an elementary special education teacher in the Pittsburgh School District. Ed was 96 years young and he served his country during WWII as a 2nd Lt. at Ft. Hood, TX. He was a founder of the South Hills High School alumni Association where he served as its 1st President. Ed is sur-vived by his sons, Edward and Ronald, 2 sisters (Lucille Adams and Mary Louise Heigl), a brother (Crispen), and former wife, Sandy Pizzuto. May his soul and the souls of all our dearly departed brothers rest in peace and may the Perpetual Light shine upon him. GOOD AND WELFARE: Bro. John “Hat” Orlando, PSI’54, has returned from his winter stay in Florida. He reports that Bro. Roland “Rocky” Pantano, PSI’54, is experiencing some health issues and he might like an encouraging word from some of the “old farts” group. You can email him at [email protected] or mail to 450 Ralph St., Orange Park, FL 32073. Brother, our hope is for your quick recovery. Say a little prayer for Rocky.

Bro. Richard “Dickie Duke” Mellick sends word that there was an unexpected treat for some of the old-timers at the recent Awards Banquet. Bro. Dan DeFelice, PSI’57, showed a film of the 1958 and 1959 Christmas parties which the brothers put on for the children at St. Paul’s Orphanage. Brothers seen in the G rated flick were: Fran Prezioso, Dick Mellick, Andy DeLuise, Jerry Sorge, Frank Rubolino, Charley Augustine, Frank Bonadio, Rocky Pantano, Carl Kolodgie, Dick Letrent, Lefty Armenti, Bernie Nickel, Larry Castelnuevo, Mario Lombardo, Tom Balestriere, Ron Talenti, Bob Gullo, Vince Manella, Dom Bucci, Bob Palermo, DanDeFe-lice, Ron Spinelli, Jim Trangle, Ron Marchione, Herb Sperling, Jim Mancino, John Buzzi, Ron Scharbo, Nick Fortuna, Nick DiMaggio, Matt Ingemi, Larry Mull, Jim LoBianco, Walt Sodie, Dave Mattei, Jack Doherty, Frank Yocano, Reynold Bartolacci, Paul Cozza and George Dursi. Bro. Mellick notes that at least 6 of these brothers have joined the brotherhood eternal. He plans to reproduce the DVD and intends to send a copy to each brother who has paid their dues. Dick extends thanks to Bro. DeFelice, who was the long suffering faculty advisor, mentor to many and dear friend and brother. Bro. Ray Westbrook, PSI’63, advises that he will be going to Haiti from June 1st through June 30th as part of the Global Volunteer Network. There will be about 15 volunteers going and Bro. Ray will be helping out with the medical end of things. Ray will be taking various medica-tions with him. If you would like to help Bro. Ray buy as many medications as possible to help the earthquake victims, send him a donation at 1151 Ceder Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15228 or call him at 412-720-5169 with any inquiries. Ray, may God be with you during your travel to Haiti and in your great humanitarian efforts to help the people of Haiti. Bro. Mike Cucchiara, PSI’51, sends a note that he expects to be incarcerated for failure to pay Florida taxes. Mike indicates that his recent stay in the alleged “Sunshine State” was full of cold, windy and rainy weather. The only way he has to show his disappointment is to not support their tax structure. I’m hoping that Mike’s tongue was firmly planted in his cheek when he wrote this note. If not, please send me the name of the jail in which you will be incarcerated so that I can send your letter to the proper address. Bro. Joe Maffei, PSI’51, sends word that he and lovely wife, Gussie, will be celebrating their 53rd Anniversary on June 22, 2010. They are the proud parents of 4 children and 6 grand-

Pittsburgh Alumni Club

Page 7

children. Joe met Gussie at DU while they both were in the School of Education. Congratula-tions to the Maffei’s on this great accomplishment and may you have many more. Bro. Jay McDonough, PSI’62, poses the following question: Bro. Jerry DeRiso, where are you??? I hop Jerry does not punch me out, Jay is the one who is asking. Well, that is all I have this month, brothers. If you have any news you would like to share with the brothers, please send me the information at the address on the envelope or e-mail me at [email protected]
