Pitman’s Reading Strategy
For articles, sections of a textbook, or other reading material
Presented by Robin ManningHays High School, Buda, Texas
Main Idea
• Students work in groups to process a reading selection
Procedure
• Teacher selects readings– One page articles work well– Longer selections can be divided into several
pieces, with each group reading a different piece of the article• For example, a long reading on Buddhism could be
divided into sections such as Origin, Spread, Beliefs, Current Practices
• Divide class into groups of 3 students
Process
• Give each group their reading, a large piece of paper for the poster, and colored markers
• Students read the article and prepare the poster
The Poster
• Suggestions for information to collect includes– Summary or main idea– Who is the article about – What is the article about– Where does it take place– Important facts– Information specific to the reading• For example, if the article is about the past, a section
on When would be appropriate to include
Students highlight the information in the article then summarize it on the poster
Glue or tape the article to the center of the poster
Sharing What They’ve Learned
• After the groups complete their posters, they can take turns presenting
OR• Posters can be hung on the wall and students do
a “gallery walk”– Students walk around the room reading the
information on the posters, and taking notes– Note-taking can be done on their own paper, or the
teacher can create a worksheet so students collect specific information
