As a result of issuing such a high number of permits, the City is faced with considerable challenges, with an unprecedented increase in private and utility construction activity in the streets of Toronto. While the City aims to review its processes for opportunities to make improvements, they also try to focus on impediments that are negatively affecting the transportation network creating congestion and gridlock during peak hours. One of the major impediments has been an increase in the number of illegal construction related occupations within public highways, especially during the AM and PM rush hours. As you can imagine, non-compliance with rush hour route terms and conditions specified on a permit is has a severe impact on the entire traffic network, disrupting the flow of traffic, creating congestion and ultimately having devastating effects on our economy. Vehicles and equipment occupying lanes during peak periods casts a negative image on the construction industry and the City as a whole. The City is requesting that if you have been issued a Street Occupation Permit, you be mindful of the law and adhere to permit conditions when undertaking work in the City of Toronto. The City is hopeful that by working together, issues of this nature will dramatically decline.
