HVAC&R’s premier accoladesNominations open for the 2019 AIRAH Awards.

Industry leaders are invited to apply for the premier accolades of the Australian HVAC&R world – the AIRAH Awards.

Each year AIRAH selects the leading people, projects and products of our industry and holds a black-tie gala dinner to celebrate their achievements. e nalists and winners receive much-deserved recognition on the night, as well as a stamp of excellence that they can display with pride in the months and years that follow.

Nominations are now open for the 2019 AIRAH Awards. ere are 13 dierent categories covering the gamut of HVAC&R projects and industry endeavour.

ese include Excellence in Sustainability, Best HVAC Retrot or Upgrade, Excellence in Refrigeration, Best Product, Excellence in Innovation, Student of the Year, and Future Leader.

STAND UP, QUIET ACHIEVERSAIRAH CEO Tony Gleeson, M.AIRAH, encourages individuals and companies to “dare to dream” about winning an award.

“It’s the nature of the HVAC&R industry that we tend to be quiet achievers,” Gleeson says. “AIRAH regularly meets people who are doing world-class work, but they perhaps haven’t thought about the benets of nominating for an award – or they are just too busy!

“To those people we say, ‘Get in touch’. We will be happy to talk to you about whether a project or colleague would be eligible, and which award category

would be most appropriate. Our team can also guide you through the formal nomination process.”

is year the AIRAH Awards gala dinner will be held in Sydney’s Doltone House on ursday, November 14. Over the past decade the awards ceremony has established itself as a must-attend event of the HVAC&R calendar. Last year, 260 of the industry’s leaders came together to applaud the very best of the sector.

SHINING A LIGHT“One of the goals of the AIRAH Awards is to encourage our industry to value its achievements and put them forward so they can be celebrated,” says Gleeson.

“For the nalists and winners it’s a huge accolade, but it’s also valuable for our sector as a whole because it shines a light on the amazing and oen-overlooked work that we do.” ❚

Up close

Bryce Anderson, M.AIRAH, is an independent building automation consultant, at Lifecycle Controls in Melbourne.

ResponsibilitiesI provide BMS-specific consulting services to building owners and facility managers.

SpecialtyBMS-specific upgrade specifications and BMS maintenance specifications. I also provide BMS technical training, and am currently running a full-day Advanced Control Strategy Optimisation course.

PassionsI am bilingual and can speak both BMS contractor language and building owner language, providing solutions that suit both parties and create true value.

ChallengesPriorities during the construction phase are not aligned with the requirements for a modern, high-tech, energy-efficient building. As a consultant, I am often best placed to influence this, which is extremely challenging.

Professional development Over the past 20 years I have done much of the traditional types of training. However, things move so quickly nowadays that you need to be actually doing it to keep ahead of everyone else. For example, I am currently collaborating with a data scientist who can model a building and then predict in advance the day and time that it will exceed its peak demand. I want to interface this with my “peak demand management” control strategy. This is how I Iearn.

Future plansMy five-year plan is for BMS training to become my primary service. This is the only way that I can make a scalable difference in the BMS industry. ❚
