Product Bulletin PIPE-LAX T PIPE-LAX additive is used in diesel oil or in oil-base muds to form a highly effective stuck-pipe spotting fluid. PIPE-LAX enables spotting fluids to penetrate and “crack” the water-base-mud filter cake with an extremely high-fluid-loss and solids-free filtrate. These features allow the PIPE-LAX and oil solution to pass through the water- base-mud filter cake between the stuck pipe and wellbore wall to facilitate freeing differentially stuck pipe. Physical appearance ............ Dark brown liquid Specific gravity ................ 0.90 pH (1% solution) .............. 5.6 – 6.6 Flash point ................... 140°F (60°C) (PMCC) Pour point ................... <15°F (<-9°C) TYPICAL PHYSICAL PROPERTIES APPLICATIONS The unique properties of PIPE-LAX (mixed with mineral oil, diesel oil, crude oil or oil-base drilling fluid) make it a superior product for preparing a spotting fluid or soak solution for freeing pipe that is dif- ferentially stuck. It forms a spotting fluid with a high-fluid-loss, solids- free filtrate that penetrates and “cracks” the water-base filter cake, allowing the lubricating solution to equalize differential pressure rapidly and reduce the forces required to free differentially stuck pipe. PIPE-LAX is a convenient and easy- to-use liquid product that is effective in very small concentrations and has an excellent success record. The recommended concentration is 1 gal (3.8 l) PIPE-LAX for each bbl (0.16 m 3 ) of spotting fluid to be prepared. Laboratory data indicates that PIPE-LAX does not become more effective at concentrations higher than this 1-to-1 ratio. This easy-to-use product, with its convenient 1-gallon-to-1-barrel ratio, is pre- ferred over sacked spotting fluid products which require more time to mix, with more detailed formula- tions and mixing instructions.

TYPICAL PHYSICALPROPERTIES

APPLICATIONSThe unique properties of PIPE-LAX

(mixed with mineral oil, diesel oil, crude oil or oil-base drilling fluid)make it a superior product forpreparing a spotting fluid or soaksolution for freeing pipe that is dif-ferentially stuck. It forms a spottingfluid with a high-fluid-loss, solids-free filtrate that penetrates and“cracks” the water-base filter cake, allowing the lubricating solution toequalize differential pressure rapidlyand reduce the forces required tofree differentially stuck pipe.

• Although unweighted spottingfluids are more effective, thereduction in hydrostatic pressurewith an unweighted spotting fluidmay be intolerable due to wellcontrol or regulatory require-ments. For these instances, aweighted spotting fluid of PIPE-LAX

in oil-base mud should be used.

• Environmental restrictions con-cerning the use of oils and oil-basefluids should be considered, sincePIPE-LAX is used in conjunctionwith oil

TOXICITY AND HANDLING

Bioassay information is availableupon request.

Handle as an industrial chemical, wearing protective equipment andobserving the precautions as describedon the Transportation and MaterialSafety Data Sheet (MSDS).

Because PIPE-LAX contains refinedoil and is used in oil and oil-base

fluids, this product and the spottingfluids formulated with this productshould be used in accordance withapplicable environmental regulationsand considerations.

WARNING! Combustible liquid andvapor. Contains diesel fuel oil, inhala-tion of which may cause cancer.Material is an irritant.

PACKAGING AND STORAGE

PIPE-LAX is available in 5-gal (18.9-l)cans or 55-gal (208.2-l) drums.
