Tēnā koutou te Whānau, o Te Kura Tuarua o Piopio,

We are in the middle of parent/student/teacher interviews and I am delighted to report

that our parent participation has increased from 28% in Term 4 2017 to 71% in Term 1

2018. An improvement of 43% on the previous year. Excellent!

As you know, we have trialled a different system of making formal bookings on the

School Interviews website, and have dedicated the entire day to these interviews.

I want to acknowledge that this way may not have suited everyone and that we are

always looking at improvement, so please give us your feedback either via email:

[email protected], or leave us a message on 07 877 8173, and we will certainly

follow up to try and accommodate everyone's needs.

Suggestions such as: how we can inform employers of this important day to assist

parents who need time off; duration and timing of the day including start and finish

times, as well as content of interviews; can we do alternative interviews for parents

who cannot make it? Such as phone conferences, later visits after hours? These are

just a few thoughts from us and your input would be very welcome.

Also a huge congratulations to Heath Barnsdall for his outstanding achievements in

the shearing field. Heath has been awarded a Principals Excellence Award for

Achievement Outside of the School in shearing.

As mentioned in last weeks newsletter, on Wednesday 2nd May, the first Wednesday

of Term 2, we will be holding a special assembly to celebrate ANZAC Day. It starts at

11.35am and will be held in the school gymnasium. I warmly invite all local primary

schools, whānau and members of our community to come and join our celebration.

I hope everyone has a safe and well deserved rest over the school holidays, and will

be ready to come back to school refreshed and prepared for a busy and important

ATHLETICS DAY SUCCESS!

Here are the results from Athletics Day held on Wednesday 21st March. Congratulations and well done to everyone

who participated. Also a big thank you to all the volunteers who helped, and to all the parents that attended the day.

Please note (as previously stated) students needed to have placed in both a track event and a field event to qualify.

If you were around the college grounds over the last weekend or at some point during the school day on Monday, you will have seen the massive truck and trailer unit with the Science Roadshow emblem parked beside the gym. It arrived Friday night, packed with over 60 hands-on exhibits, all needing to be

unloaded and set up in the gym first thing on Monday morning. A well-oiled machine, the four staff members had the whole lot set up in a little over an hour. This served as the ‘base’ for all the local primary schools who flooded into the gym, filling the first two eighty minute sessions with excited and enthusiastic students. Then came the third session for our Year Nine and Ten students. Each session started with a show highlighting aspects of temperature, including burning through a galvanised steel plate with the accompanying clouds of smoke. Then it was a free-for-all looking around any and all of the exhibits, hands on here, pushing buttons, rolling a cone shaped ball uphill, blowing paper into the air, checking out worms etc. Did you know female muscles are slightly pink and males are white fleshed?! Ever seen a skeleton ride a bike? Most of the exhibits got a pretty thorough testing out – but wait…. What do you mean, ‘did I read the instructions’???? As with any activity of this nature there are those whose help keep things on track. Twelve students volunteered as exhibit assistants, and were present at all three sessions, helping explain how their respective exhibits worked. Thanks to a great team – Hoani De Cleene, Asha Goddard, Callum Harrison, Catheryn Hood, Alicia Keightley, Rebekah Knox, Petra Mackenzie, Nikau Rickards, Samie Turu, Kelly Winikerei, Teia Blakeman and Shelby Carey. In less than an hour the whole set was demolished, repacked in the truck and gone, leaving no trace except in the stimulated (?) minds of the students and teachers who had attended. My view: value for money and the best year yet! Richard O’Dea

KI-O-RAHI REGIONALS

Ki-O-Rahi Regionals were held on Wednesday 28th March at Ngaruawahia. A total of 16 teams entered the competition and were put into sections of four. Piopio College was in Mahuta Section against Cambridge High School, Tokoroa 2 and Tai Wananga. In pool play we had two losses against Tokoroa 2 and Tai Wananga and a very good win against Cambridge High School, which was led by Lewis Taitoko who scored early points and really gee’d up the team. This meant we came third in pool play. We then played off against Matamata College and had a tight win there. This was our final game as only the winning teams in each section played a semi-final and final. A big thank you to Mandi Butler who offered to drive and supplied the team with lollies to keep energy levels up. All-in-all it was a great day out and the students represented Piopio College very well. Well done team!

THE GREAT KIWI COMPETITIONS

The University of Canterbury is offering your child the opportunity to

participate in the Great KIWI English, Mathematics and Science

competitions. These competitions take place annually and are

designed by New Zealand teachers for New Zealand students based

on the New Zealand curriculum. The competitions are administered

by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) at the University of Canterbury. The competitions are open to

all Year 5–10 students in English, Mathematics and Science. Students can enter in one or more subjects. The

competition provides teachers, parents and students with an independent, comprehensive record of a student’s

performance in key school subjects. The supervised online tests will take place in the last 3 weeks of Term 2.

Certificates will be sent to all participating students and prizes will be awarded to top students.

Payment must be received by the College by Monday 21st

May. Each subject entered costs $8.50.

The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is an independent, skills-based assessment

programme which recognises and rewards student achievement. The programme has been running for more than

30 years. Every year 1 million student entries are accepted from over 6 300 schools in Australia and New Zealand

annually. Students from over 20 countries participate in ICAS each year.

Piopio College students have the opportunity to enter these external tests and sit them at the College. They are

best attempted by students who are academically able. The following tests are available:

It should be noted that these tests are sent to Australia to be marked and in previous years there has been

considerable delay in receiving firstly the results (via an online portal) and then another delay until the certificates

and official results sheet is sent. I have a few previous years’ test papers which the students can borrow to help

them prepare. Practise papers with answers can also be purchased online. Please send the appropriate fee(s) into

the College by the closing date listed if you wish your child to enter these competitions.

If you have any queries about either the Great Kiwi or ICAS competitions then please contact me.
