Pioneering
Prepared by:P/CI (NPCC) Sim Guo Chen
For use in St. Joseph's Institution NPCC only
Objectives
• Make use of and develop creativity • Design structures, using materials such as
ropes, wooden poles and any other available and appropriate equipment
• Fun• Practical Application of Campcraft Knowledge
and Skills

Essential Factors in Pioneering• Fun and adventure• Discipline teamwork under good leadership• Planning and decision-making skills• The practical application of technical skills (learning by
doing)• Scope for on-the-spot improvisation (exercise the
mind)• The sense of achievement in completing the structure• The ability to put the structure to use in some
interesting or fun-making way• Good attitude

Successful Pioneering:
• Depends on team spirit manifested• Helps to build up a good working relationship
with team-mates

Planning
• Factors to take note of:– Functionality– Safety features– Stability– Simplicity– Tidiness of work– Element of fun and creativity

Pre-requisite Skills
• Planning and decision-making skills for construction of pioneering structure
• Skills in knots and lashing• Creativity in designing and building structures• Assessment of practicality, functionality and
associated risks of the structure

Structure Framework
• Basic unit of structure for any form of pioneering structures
• Enable improvisation upon them by adding on the reinforcement and features to complete the final structure

Shear Legs
• Constructed by tying 2 poles at an angle using either shear or diagonal lashing.

Tripod
• Constructed by tying 3 poles to form a self-standing structure using gyn lashing.

Trestle
• Constructed by tying 4 poles together using diagonal lashing or square lashing.

A-frame
• Constructed by tying 3 poles in an A-shape using diagonal lashings.

Anchorage
• The use of stationary objects and guy lines to stabilize a structure.
• Natural Anchorages– Tress– Rocks
• Man Made Anchorages– Pegs– Pickets

Reinforcement
• Factors to consider:– Directions– Strategic position– Angle of reinforcement– Type of reinforcement

Types of Reinforcement

Safety
• No protruding part/pole• No loose lines• Position/direction of guy lines should not be in
the passage way• Stability of structure as a whole• No sharp edges• No nails on the poles

Types of Pioneering - Project
• Gadgets such as shoe-racks, notice boards, tables and chairs and tools which provide regular usage for a temporary period of time.

Types of Pioneering – Problem Solving
• Constructing structures and devices in order to solve a particular problem, such as building of a bridge to cross a river.

Types of Pioneering - Theme
• To construct a series of structures with a given purpose in line with a specific theme for the pioneering session
• For example– War games– Transportation – Village life.
