* During the 19-20 School Year, all core classes, with the exception of Science, will be using the Standards Gradebook. Electives, Special Education and Science will be incorporating some of the standards based practices but will continue to use a traditional gradebook. Standards-Based Grading Our grading system is based around three philosophies:
1. Learning improves when teachers give students meaningful evaluation during the learning process. 2. Grades should only reflect what a student knows and is able to do at any given point in time. 3. Learning is a continuum, and reassessment is an important part of that process.
We expect that teachers use formative assessments (assessments during the process of knowledge acquisition) and summative assessments (assessments which occur after the process of learning has been completed) which all tie to state and national standards.

Reassessment
Provided that a student has completed all of the formative work leading to a summative assessment, and completed a “Request to Retest” form with the teacher, they will be allowed to reassess on those standards (be it a quiz, test, paper, lab, etc.) and improve their grade. The reassessment does not necessarily need to take the same form as the original assessment. (Ex: The reassessment may be more detailed or intricate, or it may be an entirely new type of assessment altogether.) There will be a universal cutoff date for reassessment established by the school each semester after which no reassessments may occur. This process is designed to allow teachers to have enough time to sufficiently grade their finals. There will be no reassessment opportunities given for finals. Practice (formerly known as homework) Practice work will occasionally be sent home with students, or it may be on on-going expectation (like nightly reading). This work is to deepen understanding of the learning that has already taken place in the classroom. It will not be new learning. This practice may be graded and entered into the gradebook as a formative assignment. Occasionally it will be marked “no count” and will not affect the student’s grade. It may, however, affect the students’ ability to retake summative assessments.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Our School Day Our school day is between 8:10 a.m. and 2:40 p.m. Students are permitted on campus at 7:40 a.m. and should be off campus promptly after school unless participating in a school sport, club or sponsored event. Dismissal is at 11:40 a.m. on half days and 1:40 on ACE days most Wednesdays. Bus transportation will be adjusted accordingly. Our District Calendar details vacation days when there is no school, early release days, conference days and school district staff professional development days and holidays. Students Leaving During the School Day Student safety is of great importance to us, and we need to know where our students are at all times. Once students have arrived on school grounds, they cannot leave without permission. We have procedures in place to ensure that students are safe while acknowledging that there are times when students must leave school for appointments or parents need to allow other authorized individuals to transport their students. The following procedures are designed to address these needs.
If your child needs to be dismissed early, please send a signed note to the attendance office stating the time he/she needs to leave the school and reason for the appointment.
Check in with the attendance office to sign your student out for an appointment.
We will call for your student when you arrive in the office. Please refrain from texting your student to meet you and leave school without following the check-out procedure.
If your student returns to school after an appointment, please have your student check back in with the attendance office.
Students will not be released to any person other than a parent or guardian, unless authorized by the parent or guardian. Authorization can be accomplished by a phone call, signed note or a designation in the student’s Skyward account.
Absent Work Requests
When a student is absent for an extended period of time, homework may be accessed through the student Skyward account and teacher pages on Pioneer’s website. If you do not have internet access, requests for assignments may be made through the attendance office at 253-583-7205.
A minimum of 24 hours’ notification is necessary to allow time to contact teachers. Work will be available in the school office at the end of the following school day.
Students who miss classes for a school activity (athletics, field trip, choir/band performance) must make up the work missed in all classes. Failure to complete make-up work after an absence may negatively affect a student’s grade.
Contacting Teachers In addition to regularly scheduled parent conferences, which are indicated on the district calendar, please feel free to contact us if you want to review progress or share specific information about your student and his/her progress at school. Open communication between school and home is the very best way to meet the needs of each student. We welcome dialogue with you. Keep in mind, district guidelines require 24-hour notice and Principal permission if you plan to visit the classroom during the school day. Check the Pioneer Website to access teacher pages and see what is going on in your student’s class each day. You also have access to Skyward where you can check up to date grades and attendance. This portal also allows for you to send emails directly to your student’s teachers. Your Skyward login and password will remain the same from year to year. If you have forgotten your password please call the main office to have it reset.

Athletics All sport sign-ups are done online through FamilyID. Refer to the Athletic link on Pioneer’s website to sign up and for more information. Sixth graders may participate in Wrestling. All other sports are limited to 7th and 8th graders. Participating in athletics is a privilege for seventh and eighth grade students at Pioneer Middle School. Pioneer athletic teams compete and abide by the rules of the Seamount League and the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA). Scholarships are available for those in need. Please ask your student’s counselor for more information. In order to participate in athletics, students are expected to maintain good behavior; have a minimum of a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) on the first day of the season in order to turn out for a team; and maintain a 2.0 GPA throughout the season. Students with a 2.5 GPA may have one F grade. If the midseason grade check shows a student has fallen below a 2.0 GPA, that student has a five-day probationary period to improve grades. During the probationary period, students may practice with the team, but may not travel with the team or play in a game. Students must be in school all day (except for medical appointments or religious holidays) to participate in practice or games. Season One August-October: Girls Fastpitch Football

ASB and Student Government The Associated Student Body (ASB) is the official governing body for student activities at Pioneer Middle School. Its purpose is to promote school spirit, to organize and promote the student events and activities of the school, to aid in the overall administration of school programs, and to help students learn the values of our democratic society. The ASB fee is $15.00. All Pioneer students are eligible to become official members of the ASB through purchase of an ASB card. Ownership of an ASB card gives students free or reduced admission to school events, makes them eligible to hold office in student government, and meets the requirement that students must hold an ASB card to join clubs, participate in athletics, and receive services supported by ASB funds. ASB and class officers are elected through a school-wide election in the spring of each year. Class representatives to the Student Council are elected in September. Clubs Clubs are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 2:45-4:00. Students may attend clubs as often as they choose. Be sure to check our website and listen to the morning announcements to learn about the many clubs Pioneer offers. Homework help is available every Tuesday and Thursday in the library. We offer a 4pm bus to transport students home after clubs. Only students working with a teacher or in a club will be allowed to ride the bus.

Deliveries/Celebrations Deliveries of flowers, candy, balloons, etc. are discouraged at Pioneer Middle School. If deliveries are made to the school, they will be kept in the attendance office until after school when the student may pick them up. No deliveries will be made to the classroom as they are a distraction to the learning environment. Balloons are not allowed on the buses as they are a distraction to the driver and may impair the driver’s field of vision. While parents/family are welcome to deliver food to students in the cafeteria, we do not allow students to order pizza, etc. to be delivered during classes or lunch. Typically, only water is allowed in classrooms. It is up to the teacher’s discretion as to when food or other drinks are allowed in the classroom; such celebrations will be on an infrequent basis and will be monitored by teachers. Fines/Outstanding Balances Students and parents are responsible for:

If at any time there is a problem with a locker, please check with an administrator or the attendance office. THE SCHOOL IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST, DAMAGED OR STOLEN PROPERTY BELONGING TO STUDENTS.
Lockers are school property and may be opened by school authorities when necessary.
You may not change lockers without permission from school staff.
Do not tell anyone your locker combination!
Do not keep money or other valuable items in your locker.
Lockers must be closed and locked at all times.
External locks are not permitted unless under special consideration.
Backpacks and other personal property should be stored in your assigned locker. Backpacks, lunch bags and binders will not be permitted in the Commons for storage during classes.
Notices and Posters All notices, advertisements, etc. must have prior administrative approval before posting on school property. Approved notices must be placed in designated areas throughout the building. Notices pertaining to school activities should be constructed and distributed with the advice of the advisor of the sponsoring group. Advertisements for non-school related activities are discouraged and must be cleared through district administration before posting. Schedule Changes Schedule changes will be considered during the first week of each grading period. Teachers, parents, and counselors will be involved in any schedule change. Final approval of any schedule change is left to the discretion of the school administration. Schedule changes will only be considered if they do not interfere with the student’s core classes and seats are available in the requested class. Video Monitors Pioneer Middle School utilizes video monitors and video cameras to videotape the school grounds. This is to provide and promote student safety and to monitor compliance with school and district rules.

ATTENDANCE, TARDIES AND TRUANCY SHSD Policy 3122
Acceptable Reasons for an Excused Absence
1. Participation in district or school approved activity or instructional program 2. Illness, health condition, or medical appointment (including but not limited to, medical, counseling, dental
or optometry) 3. Family emergency, including but not limited to, a death or illness in the family 4. Religious or cultural purpose including observance of a religious or cultural holiday or participation in
religious or cultural instruction 5. Court, judicial proceedings or serving on a jury 6. Post-secondary, technical school or apprenticeship program visitation or scholarship interview 7. State-recognized search and rescue activities consistent with RCW 28A.225.055 8. Absence directly related to the student’s homelessness status 9. Absence resulting from a disciplinary/corrective action (e.g. short-term or long-term suspension,
emergency expulsion) 10. Principal (or designee) and parent, guardian, or emancipated youth mutually agreed upon approved
activity To Excuse an Absence A parent or guardian must call, write a note, or come into the attendance office to excuse a student’s absence or tardy. Absences must be excused before the absence occurs or within 48 hours after the absence by one of the following means:

Extended Absences Any absence over two days (not including illness) must have prior approval through a planned absence form. Signatures from parents and teachers are required. Forms may be found in the attendance office and must be submitted to the attendance office prior to the absence. Chronic Absenteeism Excessive excused absences may result in a doctor’s note being required to excuse the absences. The district will file a stay petition with the Pierce County Court and complete a referral to the community truancy board when students reaches 10 unexcused absences in a year, or 18 excused absences in a year.

Academic Honesty Pioneer Middles School owes its students an environment that teaches and supports honesty and integrity. Cheating and plagiarism result in a false evaluation of student performance and the mastery of the subject matter. For these reasons, cheating and plagiarism are unacceptable and will result in disciplinary action.
Cheating and Fabrication: When a student claims he/she has mastered information or when a student falsifies information, which includes copying from another’s paper and using unauthorized materials during a test.
Plagiarism: The suggestion that someone else’s words, ideas, or research data are your own academic work. This includes failing to cite references when using other sources of information. A good example is copying information from an internet web page.
Assisting in Dishonesty: Helping a student cheat by providing him/her with answers to an assignment or completing work for the student.
Disciplinary actions for academic dishonesty may include notifying parents, loss of credit on an assignment or test, and/or additional disciplinary action including office referrals.
Bicycles and Skateboards The following rules apply to bicycles, skateboards, and other wheeled devices:
Bicycles must be parked in the designated area.
Students are responsible for locking their bicycles while at school.
Students are expected to follow all bicycle/skateboard safety laws in accordance with Washington State Law.
Skateboards, hover boards, heelys, and other wheeled devices may not be used on school grounds. Busses and Bus Stops All school rules apply on school busses and at bus stops. Students violating school rules will be subject to discipline that can include bus privileges being suspended. Cell Phones The cell phone policy at Pioneer is simple: “Away unless I say.” Cell phones are permitted in the hallways, commons, and the last 10 minutes of lunch, but in classrooms they are expected to be away unless instructor permission is granted to use it for an academic purpose. This means your phone should not be present on your desk. It should be put away in your bag in silent mode, unless you are specifically asked by your teacher to have it out. If a cell phone poses a disruption in hallways, commons or cafeteria, you will be asked to put it away. Music/sound, either played aloud or via headphones, is not permitted in the hallways. School administration will not conduct investigations for lost or stolen cell phones. Displays of Affection Displays of affection are distracting and inappropriate in a school environment and are not permitted on the Pioneer Middle School campus:

No lap sitting These limits are guided by what is appropriate, acceptable, and not disruptive to the rights of students and/or the learning environment at Pioneer. Dress Code Dress code/appearance: Dress for academic success and be aware that “fashion” outside school is not the same as “appropriate” inside school. Clothing and appearance that distracts others from academics is not allowed. The dress code applies to ANY school-sponsored event. The following articles of clothing are not acceptable and may not be worn on campus during the school day:

Any article of clothing that disrupts the educational process or becomes identified as gang related (or has reasonable suspicion)
Clothing with drug/alcohol/tobacco logos, inappropriate language or graphics, sexual innuendos, profanity, etc.
Belts, necklaces, bracelets or piercing with sharp points or metal spikes of any kind or those that are made of or made to look like weapons.
Visible undergarments or midriffs
Tops with spaghetti straps or off the shoulder shirts – okay if worn with covering
Shorts, skirts, or dresses shorter than mid-thigh
Shredded or torn jeans exposing above the mid-thigh
Pajamas, slippers, blankets and stuffed animals

Socials Student socials are regularly scheduled throughout the year. They are a privilege and students must meet certain standards to attend. All school rules apply including the following expectations:
Students may NOT attend dances if they have a Friday school, in-school or out-of-school suspension on that day.
Students must attend school all day on the day of the dance.
Students are not allowed to come and go from the dance.
Only Pioneer students are allowed at dances. If a student fails to comply with these standards, he/she can be removed from the social and may be kept from all socials for the remainder of the school year. Tardies Students who arrive less than 10 minutes late to class will be considered tardy. Acceptable reasons for a tardy are the same as those for an absence. Tardy counts will reset at the semester.
1-3 Verbal warning, tracked by teacher, communication home on 3rd tardy
4-5 Lunch detention
6 2 lunch detentions
7 Friday school (2:45-4:45)
8 1 day ISS Truancy Truancy is defined as 10 or more minutes out of class. This could include being 10+ minutes late to class or leaving the classroom for 10+ minutes. Choosing to be absent from class, even if you are still in the building (including library, bathroom or hallways without a pass from a teacher), for more than half the class will result in Friday School. The consequences for truancy will be as follows:
1 Conference with administrator and lunch detention
2 Friday School
3 ISS and parent conference **Special Note** Tardies and truancy to first period will be looked at on a case by case basis to determine the cause of the lateness. Consequences may still be assigned, but we will make every effort to work with students and families to address underlying issues and to get students to school on time.
