Does America have a future? Of course it does. But I fear for it.

The presidential debate on Tuesday evening reveals a nation sharply divided, each candidate championing the cause of his political supporters. Class division, racial division, economic division, philosophical or ideological division—while it can be argued that every election exposes the divide in our nation, the reality is that this one seems ratcheted up exponentially, no small thanks to the incendiary fueling injected into our national conversation by 24/7 “real time” internet commentary.

Consider the potential fall-out from either election outcome. Were the President to be re-elected, the hostility of the political right in this nation could threaten governmental gridlock, before which the past four years would pale in comparison. Were the President to be defeated, the bitter outcry of the political left

REVIVAL & REFORMATION

When Naaman came to Elisha for healing, he was told by the

servant to go wash in the Jordon river seven times. He was angry at being snubbed by the prophet and would have left Israel without being healed. But his servant’s reasoning prevailed saying, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he says to you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” Even though Naaman had little to no faith, he just went and did what Elisha had told him to do. His conversion and repentance came after the kindness of God was bestowed upon him (Romans 2:4). Then Naaman said to Elisha, “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel” (story from 2 Kings 5 NIV).

Naaman had expected, as many Christians today, that in order for a miracle to occur there needs to be visible manifestations—a big show of power, incantations, or “magic” words spoken by the minister or prophet of God. But God would have us know that miracles usually occur out of sight, under water, or behind closed doors—unobtrusively—even in our hearts and minds, as the stories in 2 Kings 4 illustrate. The widow with her two sons filled the oil jars all alone, and the son of the Shunamite woman, who was raised from the dead behind a locked door. Only the personal testimony of the witness(es) can be shared with those who were not present to see for themselves.

When you think about it, the next best thing to actually seeing it yourself is to hear the personal testimony from someone you trust. And this is where the story comes full circle. Naaman first came to Israel for healing because of the personal witness of a servant girl that his wife trusted! God wants to give each of us the joy of testifying about Him, which will also develop our own faith.

Please pray:• For Adventist Engaged EncounterNovember 9-11 that engaged and recently married couples obtain the insights, tools and confidence to enrich their relationship, love, and commitment.• For the upcoming election andthat those elected will be according to God’s plans and purposes in the affairs of men.• For God to use us to speak andshare His message of hope, warning, and love to those who cross our path.• That our personal witness maybe as effective as the servant girl of Naaman’s wife.• That the ministry of Anthony andEsther Yeboah in Ghana, Africa will continue to be led by God for His glory.

MORE INFOAron Balorda

Junior 3 Sabbath School leaders Aron and Lydia Balorda want to help raise

young “Daniels“ in their class. “Early in his life, Daniel learned to pray three times a day,” said Aron, “and he was equipped with faith to face adversity. We encourage our students to acquire the faith of Daniel - to make it a habit to read the Bible on their own, test the Scriptures for themselves, and communicate with God daily.”

Aron’s own background explains his passion to help young people know God. “I was brought up in Croatia as an atheist,” he said, “with prejudice against

religion and many misconceptions about God. I was plagued with two questions —What is the purpose of life? and What happens at death?” It wasn’t until Aron was a young man that he found the answers to these questions when he attended prophecy lectures at a local Adventist church.

Julia Randall and Ryan Prabhu agree that “readiness activity” time is their favorite part of Sabbath school. “During this time, our table teachers take turns creatively demonstrating the portion of Scripture we are studying. It helps us understand and remember the Bible lesson.”

“My Bible First” is the curriculum used in the Junior 3 Sabbath School. It closely follows the grand theme of Scripture - the Great Controversy between Christ and Satan. As the students and adult leaders take this spiritual journey together, they memorize portions of God’s word, a practice that they are encouraged to continue throughout their lives. “We want to get back to the basics,” said the Balordas. “If we open God’s book and open our hearts, He will be able to teach us.”

Generation of Youth for Christ: A youth-initiated and young-

adult-led movement of Seventh-day Adventists from diverse backgrounds, united in a common commitment to serious Bible study, intense prayer, uncompromising lifestyle, and boldness in sharing Christ with others. In 2002 a small group of college students began a movement – the result of a hungering for the Word of God, a deeper relationship with Christ, and an active life in His service. Their vision is to uphold the distinctive message of the Seventh-day Adventist Church; to aspire to excellence in all aspects of their lives – academic, professional, and spiritual; to embrace the call to radical discipleship, including a life of missionary service; and to be supportive and respectful of denominational leadership while remaining a youth-led movement. Projects include: massive evangelistic endeavors with thousands of lives changed, inScript – a new series of Bible studies, online sermon archives, regional youth conferences, mission

trips, networking opportunities for young people around the globe, week of prayers and youth camp meetings. This is an opportunity to network with others from a variety of backgrounds, ethnicities, and geographic locations—an occasion to be inspired by other young people sharing testimonies of what God is doing in their lives, and a moment to experience a sense of God’s call for one’s life and a commitment to live daily for Him. December 28, 2012 – January 1, 2013, thousands of young people will gather in Seattle, Washington for the annual GYC conference. For five days we’ll fellowship and grow together as we examine the nature of the revolution in the book of Acts that turned the world upside down.

Sow Safari, Andrews Academy’s biennial two-week mission trip,

has been an important part of Andrews Academy’s mission since 1986. The name, SOW Safari, speaks to the reason for these trips: Service through construction on a church or school building, Outreach through Vacation Bible Schools, and Witness through evangelistic efforts. To date, several hundred people have been baptized through the evangelistic component of these trips, including some of our students themselves!

Two years ago, a group of AA students gave a good portion of their Christmas holiday to build a church and conduct Vacation Bible Schools in La Barra, Mexico. This December a group of students will be going to Falakata, India to construct several one-day churches.

Long after students have forgotten the finer points of Algebra II, they will remember the experience of SOW Safari. The richness of a student’s life at Andrews Academy is based on more than just the time spent in the classroom. With a wide

variety of events, clubs, offices, and organizations, they have lots of options from which to choose. SOW Safari is just one of them.

Please continue to pray for Andrews Academy, specifically for our upcoming SOW Safari mission trip. Many students are looking forward to helping others make right choices and live a more abundant life. Pray that as they reach out to others, they will be changed as well.

Come show your support for our students going on SOW Safari by attending a mission trip vespers program Sabbath, November 10, at Village SDA Church starting at 5 PM.

AA / SOWING FOR JESUS

THE FOURTH WATCH CONTINUED

could threaten vast swaths of national life through economic boycott and strikes. The truth is that either election outcome could potentially sound the death knell for an already moribund economy. Class and racial divisions? The fallout implications of such potential strife is beyond calculation (but not imagination). I fear for America’s future.

Does that mean Christian voters, Seventh-day Adventists included, should abdicate their citizenry right and responsibility to vote? Not at all. In the words of our Lord, we must “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s” (see Matthew 22:21). But given what lies ahead for this nation, irrespective of our political persuasions or private votes, the second half to Jesus’ admonition is even more binding, “and render to God the things that are God’s.”

And what belongs to God in a season of such national divide, on the eve of such economic distress? Surely this hour demands our most fervent prayers for this land. “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all . . . for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1, 2). We must band together to pray for the leaders of this nation and every nation on earth. The unthinkable fallout, inevitable with economic collapse ,portends a chapter neither the church nor the nation is prepared

to face. May not God yet spare His people for the critical Three Angels mission that is our raison detre? That is, after all, Paul’s compelling reason for intercessory prayer: “For this [praying] is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all . . . to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3, 4). We must pray and labor for the salvation of Americans, for the salvation of the inhabitants of every nation on earth—for all earth children are to be the recipients of God’s urgent Three Angel appeal and warning.

In my short lifetime I have not witnessed a more consequential season than this one. And so I earnestly pray for the awakening of the church I love and for the salvation of the country I inhabit. And I urge you now to join me in these prayers.

Five years into our newly purchased house we learned that the county

had not assessed property in more than ten years. We were concerned over continuing increases in property taxes, and decided to take advantage of decreasing mortgage rates and refinance our loan.

The loan agent told us that our total cost, after bank fees and taxes, would be $14,000. We were stunned. We had expected some closing costs but nothing like this. The agent told us the bank would review our application and look for another way to process our loan.

Payday came, and according to our custom, we wrote out our tithe and offering check. But this upcoming, mysterious closing cost was on our minds. We didn’t know what to do. Without talking about the matter, we left the tithe check in the checkbook that Sabbath.

In the days and weeks that followed, we called the bank regularly to get a closing figure. Eventually we were told it would be at least $1,000, but that wasn’t final because they didn’t have all the information yet. Of course, that was more reasonable than $14,000, but it was still higher than we wanted.

A third payday arrived, and we realized we must do something with those tithe and offering checks in the checkbook. My husband thought and prayed and made a decision. Hepounded the table and said, “I don’t care if we can’t get that loan. God must come first.” We turned in the checks to the church.

We went forward with the loan, expecting that our closing costs would be more than $1,000. When the closing day arrived, I called the bank early in the morning to get the final cost. “It will be about $85,” the agent said. I asked her to repeat what she had just said. “Yes,” she said, “You heard right, about $85 to close.”

We were skeptical because of our earlier experience. We knelt and prayed for help and assurance, trusting that God would work His will.

At the closing table the agent told us that they had made a mistake. Right then our hearts must have stopped beating, expecting the worst. “What mistake?” we asked in unison. She said, “It’s not going to cost you a cent.” Instead, we would get back $300 that they could not carry over from our previous mortgage agreement, and an additional $1,300 from our escrow account!

When we put our trust in God by being faithful with Him, He gave us our new loan and an extra $1,600.

“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” Philippians 4:19.

An historic date occasioned an historic hymn. It was for July

4, 1876 that Daniel Crane Roberts wrote the text “God of Our Fathers” for a celebration at Brandon, Vermont of this prime centennial in United States history. New-York born, Roberts received ordination as an Anglican deacon and then priest in 1865-1866, and served churches in Vermont, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. His last church

was in a location remembered for its significant role in American revolutionary history: St. Paul’s Church of Concord, New Hampshire. Interestingly, Roberts’ text originally was associated with the tune of the Russian national anthem known as RUSSIAN HYMN and found as hymn no. 84 in the Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal. Now we sing this text to George Warren’s stirring hymntune NATIONAL HYMN.

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.

Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.

Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
