Joy is Judy Bornsein’s avorie word.
And as ar as joy is concerned, i’s clear she gives
as good as she ges.
Judy describes hersel as almos
75 going on seven, “because I have so much un in
lie. I’s like I’m a recess all he ime.”
Te Meridian Woods residen is up a our-hiry
each morning o enjoy he quie promise o a new
day, ready o bound enhusiasically rom one aciviy
o anoher.
Her primary passion is singing. “I dearly love
o sing,” she says. “I would raher sing han ea – and
I love o ea.” She urned o hospice singing ollowing
he deah o one o her daughers.
Judy is a voluneer member o he Visiing
Nurse Associaion’s hospice choir. “I know ha
music can oen soohe people when he spoken
word canno,” she says. In addiion o singing,
Judy is acive a he Valpo Mehodis Church
where she gives her ime and alens in 11
minisries or groups.
She draws and pains in an ar class oered
hrough Pines Village each week a he Campbell
Sree Caé. She could never draw a sraigh line
wih a ruler, and is amazed o have masered
shadow and perspecive hrough pencil draw-
ings, waercolors, acrylics and oil painings. In
her ‘ree ime’ she walks, rides her bike, reads,
knis, and relaxes wih amily and riends.
She is so busy, in ac, ha she doesn’ have ime
o wrie he wo books she has sared – including
one iled Joy in he Journey. Tose will have o wai
unil her “sedenary years,” she says wih a delighed
laugh.
“Atiude is everyhing,” Judy says. “I love being
old.”
While visiing her daugher and son-in-law
in 2007, she surprised even hersel by making a
down paymen on an unbuil lo in Meridian Woods.
Since she had lived in Valpo in he mid-o-lae ‘60’s,
she learned abou Pines Village and is excellen
repuaion in senior living opions and services.
She moved six monhs laer, wih he saisacion
o knowing ha she’d never again have o worry
abou mainenance in her Meridian Woods home.
Judy exchanges abou a dozen emails a day w ih riends
and amily. She’d like o kni and read more, bu hose, like
her wriing, will have o wai. “I have a V,” she says. “And
all I do is dus i. I don’ have ime o wach i!”
“My lie a Meridian Woods is magical,” she says.
“We moved here as srangers, became riends and now
are amily,” “o have neighbors who are riends is a gi
ha I never ake or graned.”
For Judy, lie is one endless opporuniy.
“You can see he glass as hal empy or hal ull.
In my case, I see he glass and I smile a he possibiliies,”
she says. “My glass is overowing wih he joy o being
conen.”
“As we age, he bes gi we can give our children
and grandchildren is he peace, joy, and conenmen
wih which we live our own lives,” she concludes.
Judy Bornstein Resident Spotlight
wice a week, Pines Village residens ge a litle exra rea

Live piano music. And i’s no jus any music. Voluneer Sharon

“I don’ have a hisory wih hese songs, I jus like hem,” Sharon

“Tese people have all lived hrough he Grea Depression. All
he posiive music ha came ou o he Depression is amazing. When
you’d hink hey’d be singing gloom and doom, hey’re singing “Blue
skies, smiling a me, nohing bu blue skies do I see” or “Oh, we ain’
go a barrel o money, maybe we’re ragged and unny, bu we’ll ravel
along, singin’ a song--side by side.” I enjoy being a par o ha.”
And ha’s Sharon’s litle secre: as much as she loves her music,
i’s no her only gig a Pines Village. As wih mos voluneering,
Sharon says she gains even more rom he experience han she pus

“I’ve me so many grea people,” Sharon says, her ace shining as
she describes her visis. “Tey look orward o i, and I’d beter no b e

Te idea o play dinner music came o Sharon during he opening
recepion or Pines Village’s milesone 2010 renovaion. She noiced
he piano being played in he lobby was o good qualiy and porable.
A long-ime pianis, she had recenly sared jazz piano lessons wih a
eacher in Chicago and hough she could conribue o Pines Village
by sharing her new alens.
And she hough righ.
She loves playing and residens ge o hear songs hey
