ROTARY VOCATIONAL LUNCHEON ~ MAY 21

It’s time again to plan for one of our

Member’s most favorite programs:

the vocational luncheon. This is the

one Thursday Rotary lunch that is

NOT held at the Ortiz Center.

Instead, each member has the

opportunity to select from one of the

host sites, whose program topic is

selected by the Rotarian host

business. For example, Rotarian Tim

Dowling has offered to host up to 15

members at his law office and stated

that Marvin Wanner (another

attorney in Tim’s law firm) would

be the program speaker. Topic is:

“Wills and Estate Planning.”

The host has the option to furnish

your lunch that day, split the cost

with you, or suggest you bring your

lunch.

See Page 4 for the list of hosts and

Wes Tunnell, as the Professional

Conservationist.

Art Zeitler led a group of Rotarians to

Choluteca, Honduras to help complete the

Household Water Treatment, Sanitation and

Hygiene International Project. Bea wrote:

The Choluteca Project was a prime

example of Rotarians offering their

time, talents and labor to honor the

citizens of a small Honduran city. Our

members placed the Choluteca

residents’ needs above their own.

Their efforts had offered Cholutecans

the means and the ability to filter

contaminated water and make it safe

to drink. In addition, Rotarians built

latrines for families who had never

had such “luxury” before. Through

donations and hands-on assistance,

Rotarians had offered residents of this

impoverished area an opportunity for

better health and for the young

children a chance to survive. Rotary International opens the doors for

clubs, such as ours, to reach out

beyond our frontiers and make a

difference in the lives of special

people.

The Club partnered with the Corpus Christi

Evening Rotary Club to build the Miracle

League Field which was completed that year

and the first exhibition game was held in

March 2011.

We continued to have excellent speakers

from our local area including: Mayor Joe

Adame; Dr. Flavius Killebrew; Trey

McCambell; Dr. Ray Graf; and those who

travelled to enlighten us- Brewster

McCracken (Austin) and Landon Van Dyke

(Washington, D.C.).

Club changes that year included: a new web

site; the resignation of Odette Perkins as

Club Coordinator (to pursue a great

opportunity); the resignation of Pat Townsend as President Elect; and the

The History of Rotary Club

of Corpus Christi

Compiled by Debra Bruce from records in the Rotary Club Office

2010-2011 Rotary President Bea Hanson

and her Board were installed at the July

1st meeting by Past President Debra

Bruce. “Building Communities and

Bridging Continents” was RI President,

Ray Klinginsmith’s theme for the year.

District 5930 Governor was Gilbert

Serna of the Laredo Gateway Rotary

Club. Our Club was in for another year

of wonderful newsletter articles written

by President Bea. In Bea’s first

newsletter article after expounding on

her amazing time at the Rotary

International Convention she wrote:

Participating in club projects offer

more than solutions to existing

problems; it is the act of

participation that brings Rotary

members and their families

together, strengthens friendships,

develops relationships, and makes

the club stronger, friendlier, and

more united. Laurie Beth Jones,

in her book Jesus CEO states,

“The principle of service is what

separates true leaders from glory

seekers.” Rotarians are true

leaders without a doubt!

This statement set the pace for that year

and future years of service opportunities

for our Club.

Annual service opportunities continued

with Shots Across Texas, Adoption

Awareness, Holiday Box Project for the

Food Bank, Red Kettle Bell Ringing for

Salvation Army, RYLA 2011 (hosted

130 high school juniors and 31 high

school seniors who returned as

counselors) and of course the highly

successful Harvey Weil Sportsman

Conservationist Award Dinner. The

Dinner honored Dick Barlett with The

Nature Conservancy as Conservationist

of the Year and former Club member,

selection of Richard Bonner to take over

the position.

The City added big green bins for the

recycling trash, and in the world, Japan

was hit with a major earthquake and

tsunami which causied tremendous loss

of property and lives.

And finally, two former Club members,

Stern Feinberg and Putt Hill, and two

current members Bill Volk and Dick

Conolly were laid to rest. We

especially mourned Dick Conolly who

was a very active member and a key

player in the establishment of the

Harvey Weil Sportsman Conservationist

program.
