THE ASIAN INDIAN COMMUNITY values education, and we are committed to supporting students pursuing higher education. To achieve this objective, we awarded a $5,000 scholarship to a deserving high school senior who demonstrates outstanding personal leadership, service and academic excellence.

the program THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP AND

RECOGNITION PROGRAM, established in 1961, is our annual salute to the best and brightest high school students from Hampton Roads, the Peninsula, the Eastern Shore, Western Tidewater and northeastern North Carolina.

Each participating high school selected a team of three to 24 students, depending on school size, who excel in academics, citizenship, school activities and community service. Each school chose a senior to compete for one of The Pilot’s three scholarships: $10,000 for first place and two runner-up scholarships of $5,000 each. Student achievements, career goals and college choices were reported through early March .

The judges’ criteria included transcripts, test scores, curriculums, leadership, service within the school and community, and financial circumstances. Finalists were interviewed by a panel of judges. The scholarships are awarded directly to the colleges of the students’ choice.

Students also competed for scholarships not funded by The Pilot: $5,000 from Taste of India, organized by the Asian Indian community in Hampton Roads, and the Dillard’s Samaritan Scholarship of $3,000, for which company executives served as judges (see back page for more information).

Kara Daniels2014 $10,000 winnerIndian River High School graduate ; attends the College of William & Mary

Tell us about life at college. Life at William & Mary is more stressful and demand-ing than I could have pos-sibly imagined. You’re con-stantly surrounded by some of the brightest minds in the country and being excep-tional at what you do is no longer special – It’s expect-ed.

You mentioned last year that you have strong time man-agement skills. How have you used those skills in college? Are you involved in many ac-tivities?Time management skills have been critical while try-ing to balance my course load with my extracurricu-lars. Scheduling all of my commitments in a planner has proved to be invaluable in managing my time. I’m a member of the novice crew team. I’m a volunteer tutor for the College Partnership for Kids, and I volunteer at The Haven, which is the sex-ual assault resource center on campus.

Have you decided on a major and career path?I plan on double majoring in neuroscience and kinesiolo-gy and still hope to become a neurosurgeon.

What are your plans for the summer?This summer, I plan to take classes on campus for a month and then return to volunteering at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center while beginning training to be a certified EMT.

Tell us about life at college. I’m attending U.Va. as a computer science major in the engineering school. While I do miss my family, I’ve gotten the opportunity to meet some great friends, talk to inspiring professors and eat some mediocre din-ing hall food. Overall, it’s been a blast!

You asked Mary Nazareno to go to prom with you in last year’s Scholastic Achieve-ment publication. Did she accept?Mary said yes, and she loved the way I asked her! We went to prom together, and it was a really great ex-perience.

Have you decided on a ma-jor and career path?My first computer science course was awesome, and I realized that I really en-joyed the logical nature of CS. I plan on majoring in computer science, and then possibly getting a terminal coursework-based master’s degree at U.Va .

What are your plans for the summer?This summer, I’m going to India with my family to vis-it relatives. I also plan on developing an app or web-site to keep practicing com-puter science and get bet-ter.

Taylor Cecil2014 $5,000 winnerManteo High School graduate: attends North Carolina State University

Tell us about life at college.Life at N.C. State is amaz-ing because there is always something going on, even at four o’clock in the morning. It gave me the chance to to-tally reinvent myself and start spending time with the caliber of person I want to become.

How are things different from living in Manteo?Life in Raleigh is differ-ent from life in Manteo in so many ways, prominently in night life and activities. In Manteo, everything clos-es when the sun goes down, but in Raleigh, that is when most places are opening. I am a night person, so I love living in a city that hardly ever sleeps.

Have you decided on a ma-jor and career path?I have decided to major in chemical engineering with a bio molecular concentra-tion. I intend to work in a chemical engineering and genetics lab with the pur-pose of examining different neurological pathways for efficiency in the injection of nonpathogenic viruses containing genetic correc-tions to alter the initial ge-netic code.

What are your plans for the summer?I plan to work in a few dif-ferent restaurants over the summer so I can help pay my college bills. I also in-tend to spend any time off with my friends or at the beach.

Amy McMillen2014 $5,000 Taste of IndiaGrassfield High School graduate; attends the University of Virginia

Tell us about life at the Uni-versity of Virginia. Have you found time to still play pia-no? Life at U.Va. is a constant whirlwind that can seem overwhelming at first. However, it is all about finding the right balance between classes, student or-ganizations and personal time as well. Although it is difficult, I still manage to find time to play piano and am the choir accompanist for a local church.

Have you decided on a ma-jor and career path?As of now, I’m still pursu-ing engineering but am not exactly sure what type yet. In regards to a career, I’m hoping to pursue social en-trepreneurship and possi-bly work in consulting or at a startup.

What are your plans for the summer?After going to Spain for a month with my sister, I’ll be returning to Charlottesville to take classes and work with a fashion startup.

What’s the most valuable lesson you learned after your first year of college?It is easy to get caught up in the daily routine of life, but it is important to take a step back and reflect on the things that truly matter to you the most.

Barbara Hamm Lee is the execu-tive produc-er and host of “Anoth-er View,” a weekly talk show that examines today’s issues from an African American perspec-tive and airs every Friday at noon on 89.5 WHRV-FM. She is also the managing director for SkillsOnline, WHRO-TV’s work-force/professional development website that provides affordable courses for industry certifica-tion in high-demand careers.

Gina Cassidy serves as campus di-rector of ca-reer ser-vices with ECPI Uni-versity. She is an educational administrator with more than 20 years of ex-perience in many industries, in-cluding higher education, human services, and pharmaceutical re-search and development. Her ed-ucational background includes doctoral courses in organization-al management/human resourc-es, a master’s degree in human resources development and a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Mark Quan is the circu-lation direc-tor for Pilot Media. He started with Landmark Media En-terprises in January 2001 as home deliv-ery manager and served as dis-tribution manager prior to his current role. Before moving to South Hampton Roads in 2001, he was regional circulation man-ager for the Los Angeles Times under Tribune Co. ownership, and sales and distribution man-ager for the Los Angeles Times under Times Mirror Corp. own-ership. Mark lives in Chesa-peake with his wife, Gina, and three children: Britni, Matthew and Daniel.

Wing Cmdr. Gordon Pendleton joined the Royal Air Force in 1981. After many years in assign-ments in England, Belgium, It-aly, Croatia, Germany, Afghan-istan, Iraq and Turkey, he was posted to Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Transforma-tion in Norfolk in March 2012. He serves as a concept develop-ment officer and is responsible for the NATO Urbanization Proj-ect. He is married and has two daughters. He earned a first-class honors bachelor’s degree in business leadership and man-agement.

Emily Martell$10,000 scholarship winner Maury High School, Norfolk

A chance and brief, yet sig-nificantly meaningful, en-counter with a homeless man gave Emily Martell a new look at life and the homeless population.

“Homeless people always frightened me,” said Emily, 18 . “Not because I was afraid they would harm me, but be-cause I saw them as funda-mentally different.”

Emily, who will attend the College of William & Mary as a James Monroe Schol-ar , volunteered as part of her church’s emergency shelter team this winter.

It wasn’t the first time she’d helped out.

But it was the first time she ventured out from the safe confines of the kitchen to speak with a man named Robin.

“Before I had hardly seen this individual as a person,” Emily said. Her idea of home-less people has evolved.

“ Now I realize it is no more than a description of finan-cial hardship and not of char-acter,” she said.

The connection Emily made with Robin could not be forgotten the day before she learned she was the win-ner of the $10,000 Scholastic Achievement Scholarship.

She spotted Robin on the street – months after their initial meeting. His stance and stained, ill-fitting cloth-ing caught her attention. The juxtaposition of her situation versus his unnerved her.

The daughter of two classi-cal musicians, Emily grew up in Colonial Place. In Febru-ary, she started working her first paying job as a hostess in a Norfolk restaurant.

Emily, who also attends the Governor’s School for the Arts, has been involved with the Virginia Children’s Cho-rus since she was in the first grade. Now a veteran, she en-joys making an impact on those starting out.

“I try to seek out the young-er singers to have fun with them and help them feel part of the group,” she said.

While Emily feels blessed by her circumstances, she knows that others might not be as fortunate.

She has made a decision to use her award and college ex-perience to learn to represent marginalized people in soci-ety, those who by chance and circumstance have had their lives made more difficult.

“I cannot control the situa-tions that led me to this gift, but I can control where I go from here,” Emily said.

Exactly where she is go-ing in life isn’t completely clear yet, but Emily is excited about her future.

“Though I love history and international affairs, I am not certain what I will end up ma-joring in,” said Emily.

Whether she is ingesting the international section of the newspaper, going on a run , playing boisterous sec-tions of Prokofiev on the pia-no, or raising her hand for the fifth time in class with an-other point to add in a debate, Emily Martell is taking it all in and enjoying life.

Nick Anderson$5,000 scholarship winnerFrank W. Cox High School, Virginia Beach

Math notes hold a fascination for Nick Anderson .

Somewhere in pi’s endless string of digits or the detailed calculations of higher-level cal-culus, this scholar hears echoes of music.

“Music theory, the math of music, is one of the reasons I’m interested in studying theoreti-cal physics, understanding our place in the cosmos,” he said. “I like seeing the connections in stuff.”

It started early. On his fourth birthday, Nick’s grandfather gave him a keyboard and mu-sic book. Nick looked at all that black and white – the strange dots and pennants climbing up and down the lines, the tempt-ing length of glossy keys – and pressed his fingers to the start of his artistic life.

Now 17 years old and a long way from banging the board, Nick credits the experience with bringing harmony to his world.

“I think music balances as much as it may drive me,” he said.

“I’m analytic by nature and at home reading and under-standing music, and I like how it then becomes an expressive, emotional thing.”

Being attuned to artistic and academic success means a dearth of leisure hours.

Consider these activities: ac-ing 15 Advanced Placement courses at Cox; sitting as the Governor’s School for the Arts principal second violin in addi-tion to playing piano and viola; performing with the Hampton Roads Chamber Players; work-ing as King’s Grant Presbyteri-an Church’s pianist and achiev-ing an Eagle Scout badge .

In rare spare moments, he reads Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Orwell and Heller, swims a lit-tle, runs a little, and watches classic films with Governor’s School pals. There’s a girlfriend in there, too. The oldest of three siblings, Nick attended Kemps Landing Magnet School.

“That prepared me for Cox and Governor’s School,” he said. He reveres the German composers, as well as Proko-fiev, Shostakovich and Glass, and names Jeff Phelps, chair-man of GSA’s Instrumental De-partment, as his most forma-tive influence.

As an Echols Scholar at the University of Virginia, Nick’s contemplation of complex codes will continue . In addition to the-oretical physics, he is consider-ing classical studies, music or conducting.

“I’m drawn to those areas where you understand all the parts as they become a whole.”

His grandparents played a key role in his life, and he cher-ishes the memory of keyboard giver and grandfather Nick Na-zar, who passed away in 2013.

“My family says I have his dry sense of humor, but I most hope to have his generous spir-it,” he said. “I want to contrib-ute to the world.”

Time to cue the music.

Alexus Ivy Berndt $5,000 scholarship winnerCurrituck County High School, Barco, N.C.

Meet success stealth bomb-er Alexus Ivy Berndt.

Alexus prefers discreet dili-gence over ostentatious effort.

“One of the biggest things that drives me to excel is that I am secretly very competi-tive,” she said.

“I keep quiet and try to be the best around.”

The silent strategy has worked across multiple fronts.

The oldest of five siblings, Alexus takes nothing for grant-ed and has maximized every opportunity afforded her. With eight Advanced Placement classes under her belt in ad-dition to four years of honors classes, Alexus, 18, has played varsity basketball and softball and participated in numerous school clubs, including Math Team, Science Olympiad and Beta Club.

Her community service ranges from Ruritan’s Putt-Putt for Polio and Currituck Relay for Life to Kids Walk for Cancer. She also served as cap-tain of the travel softball team Lady Cruisers.

“I spend almost all of my free time on the softball field,” she said, but allows for one guilty pleasure: “Being at the beach with a good book.”

Science has long been an in-terest, and Alexus has been par-ticularly inspired by her AP en-vironmental science teacher, David Gift.

“He not only teaches the cur-riculum but also things that will relate to us in real life,” she said.

“He’s taught me a lot about our society and current issues at hand and opened my mind to many new ideas.”

Another mind-opening expe-rience was attending the Con-gress of Future Medical Lead-ers. Long committed to doing something to make a difference in the lives of others, Alexus said she found her mission at the Congress.

“It sparked my interest in technology and medicine,” she said, noting that she intends to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering at North Carolina State University.

More specifically, Alexus narrowed her sights when her best friend joined the Marine Corps last year. It provided the impetus for wanting to help develop technologies that al-low prosthetic limbs to be con-trolled by the brain.

“This would be a great oppor-tunity for all amputees but es-pecially life-changing for our wounded soldiers.”

Government teacher Seli-na Jarvis describes Alexus as knowledgeable, affable and pas-sionate about her career goals.

“She is truly a student that possesses not only an admira-ble work ethic, but a focused picture of her future.”

Natasha Dhamankar $5,000 Taste of India scholarship winnerPrincess Anne High School, Virginia Beach

“This has special signifi-cance for me,” said Natasha Dhamankar regarding her se-lection as the $5,000 Taste of India scholarship winner.

“I have performed at the (Taste of India) event many times,” she said of her Indian classical and Bollywood dance performances.

The 17-year-old, who lives in Church Point, will gradu-ate from Princess Anne High School’s International Bacca-laureate program in June and head off to Harvard in the fall.

“After much deliberation, I felt that Harvard would give me the most academic flexibil-ity and the opportunity to have wonderfully diverse experienc-es with a vibrant student body,” said Natasha, who admits she’s recently had a fascination with the Boston accent.

Her academic record, which includes many Advanced Place-ment classes, shows her deter-mination and hard work.

Natasha’s lengthy list of ex-tracurricular activities is im-pressive, too. She’s a member of the National Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, Forensics Team (co-captain and state champion), and president of the Student Council Association.

She is also a student commis-sioner for the Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission. Natasha feels exhilarated to be surrounded by communi-ty leaders whom she views as wholly invested in the welfare of human rights in the region.

According to the city web-site, the commission provides education, serves as a forum and gives assistance to those who believe their rights have been violated by referring them to the appropriate gov-ernment agency.

“Being a part of this group challenges me and makes me want to do more for others,” Natasha said. “It’s eye-opening and so critically important.”

“Even with her busy sched-ule, she has been able to take information back to her school and recruit other students to attend HRC meetings and oth-er special events,” said Bonnie Beni, a Virginia Beach commu-nity relations specialist.

When it comes to wanting to do more for others, Natasha al-ready has and will continue to while she pursues a degree in biomedical engineering.

She was a paid researcher in 2013 at Hampton University in its NanoHU Pioneers Program. She was also one of 26 students selected from Virginia to at-tend an intensive four-week medical program through the Governor’s School for Medicine and Health Sciences at Virgin-ia Commonwealth University.

When it comes to the future, Natasha said, she doesn’t quite have it all figured out yet, but she does know she’d like to do some sort of good in the world.

Chances are we’ll be hearing the name Natasha Dhamankar again one day.

Dillard’s Samaritan Scholarship Winning Essay 2015

“WE MAKE a liv-ing by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

These words, spoken by Winston Churchill, motivate me to perform good works in my community and in my home.

I am proudly serving my sec-ond year as the Norfolk Academy Reach/Interact club president. This position allows me to satiate my love of leading, organizing and perform-ing good works within my commu-nity. I have also had the honor of at-tending leadership development programs where I have formed con-nections with other leaders in my area to promote global citizenship. Additionally, as a student leader on the Norfolk Academy Commu-nity Service Board, I promote ser-vice-oriented collaboration between clubs, create volunteer opportu-nities and spread optimism in the greater community.

Furthermore, I have loved devot-ing my time to the Children’s Hos-pital of The King’s Daughters for the past two years. Volunteering at CHKD has allowed me to incorpo-rate my passion for children and en-gagement to become a catalyst for positive change in society. It has been a heart-warming experience to put smiles on the faces of chil-dren confronting acute illnesses.

In addition, I have dedicated much of my time in the commu-nity to bringing families together. While serving at the Judeo-Chris-tian Outreach Center and the Food-bank of Southeastern Virginia, I have encouraged the gathering of homeless and less fortunate fami-lies over much appreciated meals. I have also prepared meals for the family members of sick children at the Ronald McDonald House. I feel a particular devotion to this estab-lishment as it draws together fami-lies at a critical time when unity is difficult and sometimes financially unattainable.

Moreover, I have gathered and wrapped presents from Santa Claus for a class of underprivileged pre-schoolers, fostering a sense of joy and unity in their homes on Christ-

mas morning.Not only am I a servant of my

community, but I am also a loving sister, daughter and granddaugh-ter. I value the time I spend with my family above anything else. My two younger sisters see me simul-taneously as a role model and a best friend. They know that my bedroom door as well as my heart is always open for them. They freely and fre-quently come into my room to get clothes, books, outfit advice, social media guidance, homework help, or a shoulder to cry on. As my parents are both busy hard workers, I often find myself adopting the position of a caretaker for my sisters. I have repeatedly driven them to school, early morning band practices, and dance classes in addition to prepar-ing their meals, proofreading their essays, and providing them with un-conditional loving support.

My grandmother is my great-est role model. Since my infancy, she has been one of my primary caretakers while my parents both worked. I have vivid, jovial memo-ries of racing down Mount Trash-more, playing hide-and-go-seek on wooden castle playgrounds, float-ing in matching pink inner tubes at the beach, and getting lost be-tween bookshelves in the library with her. We have recently experi-enced a role reversal as she had fall-en ill with stage-four cancer. I enjoy accompanying her during her four-hour chemotherapy appointments. I truly treasure every moment I have left with her. Her strength and per-severance have served as a source of inspiration in my life. I would do anything in the world for my grand-mother.

Whether I am giving back to my community, guiding my sisters through life or caring for my grand-mother, I strengthen my relation-ships by extending a helping hand to those around me. It is in these small endeavors and treasured mo-ments between the servants and the served that I truly understand that while I will make a living with what I earn, my greatest rewards lie in making a life with what I give.
