UTILIZATION
Immerse the students in the culture
a. introduce the students to interesting slang or phrases
-Have your class create a blog discussing what you are learning in class; using the slang that they have learned. For example, if your class is studying the bombing of Pearl Harbor, teach them a few Japanese slang words and have them use them in a blog.
UTILIZATION
b. play popular music
-have the students find music from the country and present it to the class, discussing what the song means. For example, when studying science, teach your class about a specific philosopher and his or her country. Make sure to teach them a few words in his or her language.
UTILIZATION
c. Watch movies or soap operas
-Post videos on a Facebook page for the class and have students watch and comment on them. For example, when discussing recycling or “green” initiatives in class, post videos from other countries for your students to watch. Make sure the videos are about a country that is going above and beyond and teach them some recycling jargon from the country. Have them watch the video and use the recycling jargon in their discussion.
UTILIZATION
d. Introduce them to popular fashions
-split the class into groups of traditional and current fashion trends, have them research these fashions and present to the class with posters. The posters must use the traditional language of the country they are studying.
UTILIZATION
e. study menus or recipes from the country
-Bring in samples of food and have the class watch a cooking show from the country they are studying. Compare a popular food from your area to a popular food from the country you are studying and use the names in the language you are studying.
