Introduction to Capsule Camera
A Pill Camera is also called as Capsule Camera Introduced in the year 2000 by Gabriel Iddan Approved by U.S. Food & Drug administration The camera has the size of the pill or a capsule which will
go inside the body Helps to diagnose the stomach related problems by going
inside the body Reduce the drawback of painful endoscopy
DESCRIPTION
Consists of a Disposable Camera, Disposable LEDs, a Battery, & a built-in Antenna
This whole System is known as the Diagnostic-Imaging System
WHY PILL CAMERA???? Pill Camera can easily diagnose stomach related
problems without any severe pain
Earlier a process called Endoscopy was used which was painful and required sedation
Patient has to only eat the pill and all the stomach related problems can be diagnosed
COMPONENTS OF A PILL CAMERA
The Pill Camera consist of the following important parts
Optical Dome Lens Holder Lens CMOS Image Sensor Battery ASIC Transmitter & Antennae
OPTICAL DOME This shape results in the easy orientation of the capsule
axis along the small intestine
The Optical Dome consists of the Light Receiving Window
LENS HOLDERLens holder accommodate the Lens such
that the Lens does not get dislocated
LENS Most important component of the capsule
Arranged behind the Light Receiving Window
The Light through the window falls on the Lens
ILLUMINATING LEDS Placed around the Lens & the Image
Sensor Helps to illuminate the parts inside the
stomach

Another most Important Part of a Pill Camera
CMOS sensor is used to record high quality Images
Has 140 degree field of view & can detect objects of 0.1mm
BATTERY
The battery is placed behind the Image Sensor and is in the form of a small button
Battery is made up of Silver –Oxide which is disposable & not harmful to the body
ASIC TRANSM
ITTER &
RECIEVER
ASIC(Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Transmitter is received behind the batteries with an antenna
arranged at the end of the capsule. It is enclosed in the dome shaped
Chamber
WO
RKING
OF A PILL
CAMERA
First capsule is swallowed by the patient
The LED illuminates the interior of the stomach & the image sensor records the images
The reciever is worn by the patients in the form of the belt on the stomach
The images are passed through the Transmitting Antenna to the reciever in the form of EM waves and record the images into memory.
A computer workstation process the & the doctor examines the images & diagnose the problem
Images Obtained by Capsule
Camera
ADVANTAGES
No side effect Painless as compared to endoscopy Don’t cause any harm to the body Consumes Less time & gives good
results
DI
SADVANTAGES
Pill Camera is very Expensive
Doctors will charge huge fee from the patients for carrying this test
Sometimes, Camera can get stuck in the small intestines if there exists some obstruction inside intestines
CONCLUSIONSPill Camera has a Bright future which
will help the doctors to diagnose the
stomach related diseases more easily but
severesteps need to be taken to overcome
the drawbacks
