Grace and Peace to you
A few years ago, I learned a term: Upcycling.
It was one of those terms that once I heard it, I heard it EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME.
It was often paired with words like, “Vintage” or “Original” or “Heirloom” or
“Repurpose.” At first I was mortified, with flashbacks of all the Antique Road Shows I’d
watched as a child, gasping as I realized people painted wood with spray paint, or
smeared wax over beautiful antique furniture. And I resisted at first.
But then I gave in and realized ‘upcycling’ and ‘repurposing’ were merely recreations of
resurrection. Of making something new again, of giving life back, of life that looked
different and functioned differently, but was still the same.
We have been wandering through the Gospel of Mark, the earliest of the written
Gospels, and I have been wondering a lot about the early church--how they navigated a
post-resurrection world, filled with budding house churches and new disciples fumbling
their way through being the Body of Christ in this world.
The more I have read about the early church, the more I have realized we, in the church
in 2020, resemble them a great deal. We live in an age of increasing secularism. For
the most part, churches are getting smaller. And some have even started to meet in
homes. So, I think we have a lot to learn from the Early Church: what helped them
together, what brought them together, what planted seeds of hope within them.
This Lent, for our Wednesday evenings, I am inviting the congregation into a worship
series on Throwback Discipleship, where each Wednesday evening we will focus on a
different Epistle and different theme/belief from the early church. On March 4, we will
explore Baptism; March 11, it will be Holy Communion; March 18, we will think about
Generosity; March 25, we will be reminded of Sabbath; and on April 1, we will embrace
Acceptance. All of these were important tenants and ideals of the Early Church.
We are incredibly lucky to have a team of people who understand the visual
importance of Worship. Each Wednesday night, another visual piece will be added to
our Lenten Theme by members of our Worship Atmosphere Team that reflects the
theme for the Wednesday evening services.
I am inviting the congregation to wade through Lent this year and hold to what lives at
the core of our faith. I want us to remember that we walk through this season, along-
side our ancestors in faith, from all parts of this world. People who had the audacity to
hold to the power of communities held together by water, fed alone by bread, that
remembered to rest, give all that they could, and offer an acceptance and love that
was so radical it got a man called Jesus killed.
So, we hold to these stories of courageous faith as we make our way through the
journey of Lent. I pray, that as your make your way through this ancient season of
reflection and contemplation, you might find new and meaningful ways to walk this
journey.
A blessed 40 days to all of you. Your sister in Christ,
Pastor Ashley

MISSIONS
WINTER FOOD DRIVE for FAMILY SHARING—Thank you to everyone who brought in non-perishable food items on January
19. We received a thank you letter from Julie Hoover, Executive Director of Family Sharing. They were very grateful that
we hosted this drive in January, which is typically a month when donations drop off. Over 600 families depend on them
regularly for groceries and other personal necessities. We will be scheduling another food drive in May (another slow
month), so please watch for the date. One of the moms shared her thoughts when asked “Why Family Sharing?” “…I
never thought I would need to come to a food pantry, but right now I do. The help I get gives me the peace of mind that
my kids have plenty to eat…”
HELPING ONE PERSON MIGHT NOT CHANGE THE WORLD, BUT IT COULD CHANGE THE WORLD FOR ONE PERSON. NIGHT OF WARMTH Thank you to everyone who supported this special Pilgrim offering to benefit the shelter at
Repairers of the Breach and the warming room at Capuchin Community Services. Pilgrim will be sending $900 to each
location. Please know that you have been a blessing to those struggling through the winter cold!
ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING—We all try to watch out for our neighbors and lend a hand when it is needed. But what
about our “neighbors” in other towns, or in other countries? Have you ever wished you could
make a bigger difference in the world? Have you wished you could provide food, water and
medical help to refugees, give poverty-stricken children the opportunity to attend school, or
teach job skills to someone injured by a disaster? Each of us has the power to help make the
world a better place, and it’s easier than you might think—by giving to ONE GREAT HOUR OF
SHARING. OGHS is an inter-denominational effort to raise funds to help those who are most in need throughout our
global community. This annual Lenten offering is the UCC’s largest mission effort. We will kick off Pilgrim’s OGHS cam-
paign on Sunday, March 1 and will accept offerings through Palm Sunday, April 5. You can contribute by using a special
OGHS envelope found in the pews. We will again add the profit from our Wednesday Lenten meals. Our combined goal
is $5,000. Watch our progress on the Mission Board. Will you give to One Great Hour?
FAMILY PROMISE of OZAUKEE—Pilgrim volunteers will assist Grace Lutheran Church when they host for Family Promise
during the week of March 29 through April 5.
MR. BOB’S UNDER THE BRIDGE MINISTRY—Thanks to the Boy Scouts, all of the backed-up donations have been sorted
and the hold has been lifted. You may drop off your donations in the bin located near the carport entrance or, if it’s
convenient for you, please bring them to Advent Church in Cedarburg. Their bin is near the church entrance.
ST. BEN’S COMMUNITY MEAL—St. Ben’s provides a hot, homemade meal six days a week. We contribute at least 24
desserts on the first Friday of each month to go with the Lasagna dinner that St. Joseph’s church provides. If you’d like
to help, please have the dessert of your choice dropped off by noon on March 6.
We also help serve the meal once a month. Our next serving date is Tuesday, March 10. Please sign up on the Mission
board.
PILGRIM RECYCLES—Please continue to bring in your empty amber RX containers and place them in the bin located in
Kalweit Hall. They are re-used at the Bread of Healing Clinic in Milwaukee.
YARN DONATIONS - Any extra yarn and/or cotton fabric may be placed in a bag marked “Yarn Ministry”
to be used by women at the Union Grove Correctional Facility to create quilts and afghans.
The following thank you was received from Family Promise of Ozaukee County:
Dear Members of Pilgrim UCC: Thank you so much for your generous donation of paper products and household cleaning items . We were able to utilize the donations in our family shelter immediately. Your donation made the families in our program feel the love and caring that can be found in Ozaukee County!
- Kathleen Christenson Fisher, CEO Family Promise of Ozaukee County (The entire letter can be found on the Mission Board, and includes a special message from one of their former clients.)

Presentation: “Grafton Historical Society”
The Grafton Historical Society was formed in May, 2016. Join us to learn about the beginnings of this organi-
zation and its goals as it literally digs into the past searching for clues to the early settlers and later families.
There are stories to tell of this small community 20 miles north of Milwaukee. Do you know the history?
Nick Schanen will provide insights and some history of the significance of the Town of Grafton from Lake
Michigan (Port Ulao) westward toward the village. This development began in the mid 1850s and played an
important role for resources to Milwaukee. There is much more to tell.
Join us for breakfast followed by the presentation. Please use the sign-up sheet posted in the narthex. A free will offering will cover the cost of the meal.

The African Americans (Many Rivers to Cross) PBS Documentary
Do you want to learn more about the history of African Americans? How about understanding conditions in the US that
limited their ability to advance along with the nation as a whole. Could the sins of our past be the reason for continued
discord for so many in today’s society? If we are not interested in hearing the whole story, how can we condemn our
brothers and sisters who have lost hope for improvement?
Join us for two segments of this important documentary that will educate those who lived through these early historical
times, as well as the younger generations who just did not know. We will invite others from the community to attend these
events. Each video will be shown in the Pilgrim sanctuary.
Sunday, March 15: “ Rise!” (1940-1968) This segment covers the period of WWII through the long road to civil
rights when the deep contradictions in American society finally became unsustainable.
Sunday, April 19: “A More Perfect Union” (1969-2013) Growing class disparity threatened to split the black
community in two. Economic and political forces isolated the black urban poor in the inner cities. Many issues and true
social equality remained to be resolved.
Gatherings: 6:00 pm *** Video: 6:15 pm *** Discussion: 7:15-7:45 pm

Think Spring! We’re planning our late spring
activities to spruce up the church grounds. If you are
thinking about how you or your family can become
active in your church, consider adding Saturday
morning, May 9 to your calendar. Clean-up day is
once a year. Chores include raking, mulching, trimming, and outside window
washing. If you want to volunteer for tending one of many landscape beds
throughout the season, this could be your first day to begin that care. Look for
