• New England: Plymouth, Boston, Salem• Motives: Escape religious persecution– Pilgrims- strict Protestants who were angry with
the Anglican Church and its actions– Gov. John Winthrop- wanted “City upon a Hill” a
model city.
Mayflower Compact
• Signers promised to form a government and respect its laws
• Have town hall meetings• All male church members who had the FULL
conversion experience could vote in 1631.
Half Way Covenant
• 1662, gives all ½ church members who have not had a full conversion experience the right to vote.
• In 1691 all land owners get to vote
Roger Williams
• Founder of Rhode Island• Banished for speaking out against church• Believed all men should vote or Universal

• Blame witches for attacks or disease that year• Children would have convulsions and hid
under chairs• 20 people were hung or pressed to death.• Could have been caused by mold, hysteria, or
greed to seize land.
