The National Capital Commission is pleased to invite the community of Pikwakanagan to participate in the NCC’s 2019 Public Archaeological Dig. As in past years, the dig will be held at a pre-contact campsite which, occupied roughly 2,000 years ago, is located on the shoreline of the Ottawa River in Leamy Lake Park (see attachments). It will be carried out in August, celebrated in Quebec as Archaeology

Month, over the following days:

Tuesday, August 20, to Saturday, August 24.

Hours: 8:00am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm to 5:00pm daily

An official launch of Archaeology Month will take place at the dig site on Saturday, August 3, between 10:00am and 12:00pm, and will consist of an Anishinabe Algonquin welcome song, and prayer, ceremonial fire and feast. The opening will be under the guidance of Rene

Tenasco, the NCC’s Indigenous Liaison Officer.

Pinock will be on-site Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3 and 4,

demonstrating his knowledge of birch bark.

Parking is at the parking lot of the former Gatineau Boom, 80 Fournier Boulevard, Gatineau, Quebec (see attachment). Naturally, if you wish, we would be happy to schedule a private visit to the site for your community or community organization on any day you prefer, including during
