experienced a Dengue epidemic in 2007 that pu

other military personnel stationed in Puerto Ric

at risk, sickened over 11,000 people on th

Island, and killed more than 20. The epidemi

suffering from life-threatening viral infection

to reduce the number of virus particles in

dengue fever pathogen, apply an anti-viratreatment prepared by NanoViricides, Inc., an

The National Park Service maintains the Sa

Juan National Historic Site, which is also

UNESCO World Heritage Site. The San Jua

National Historic Site currently includes for

San Cristbal, San Felipe del Morro, and SaJuan de la Cruz (also known as El Cauelo), plu

bastions, powder houses, and three-fourths of th

city wall. All these defensive fortification

surround the old, colonial portion of San Juan

PR. The price of electricity in Puerto Rico is ver

high, and is largely generated through thburning of fossil fuels. The Park Service seeks t

explore its current usage and to develostrategies to conserve energy and reduce it

environmental impact. Much of the existin

equipment used at the Historic Site is old and i

not energy efficient.

This funding will be used by the Park Service t

hire a contractor to conduct an assessmen

regarding the potential use of alternative energ

sources at the Historic Site and at other histori buildings in Old San Juan. The results of th

assessment are expected to be used by the Par

Service to make the Historic Site more energ

efficient and environmentally friendly.

in large part to salt spray humidity. The risk ocollapse, especially in the case of a seismi

event, is very real. The requested funding will b

used to stabilize and restore the north portal. I
