DEAR RESIDENTS,November is truly a cool time of year in Southern California, and not only because the last blast of summer heat is at last behind us. With the arrival of fall comes preparations for the holiday season, which involves two of our favorite things (besides the annual airing of “The Sound of Music”) – inspiration to deck out the house for numerous gatherings of family and friends, as well as planning all kinds of ways to get the people most important to us together.

Pier Merone and Larry Getzoff in our cover story, have built wonderful careers on helping families and advocates stay healthy, and celebrate our Valley community.

Even as we prepare to get a little more cozy at home, however, our calendar provides many opportunities to get out and about to enjoy seasonal delights unique to Southern California. And with that, we wish you and your family much to be thankful for as the festive season gets underway.

November is synonymous with family gatherings and gratitude, especially with Thanksgiving kicking off the holiday season. However, the month has special meaning for Pier Merone, in addition to seasonal celebrations with husband Larry Getzoff, and their college-age son Jonathan.

Pier, Executive Director for the National Kidney Foundation (serving Southern California and Nevada), will once again see her team’s hard work and planning come to fruition with the Los Angeles Kidney Walk this coming November 5. By Elyse Glickman | Photography by Ivonne Maria Photography

PIER MERONE & LARRY GETZOFFTO THEIR HEALTH

As she sees it, the awareness and fundraiser gets the community into a family state of mind weeks earlier as it shines a spotlight on kidney health treatments and illness prevention, patients, and their families.

The Kidney Walk is the nation's largest fundraiser to fight kidney disease. Staged in nearly 100 communities, more than 85,000 walkers join NKF to raise more than $9 million to help kidney patients and their families each year. More than 80 cents of every dollar donated directly supports NKF programs and services.

“The ‘Walk’ isn’t just a healthy activity people can enjoy with family and friends,” Pier says from her office on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks. “It’s an opportunity to be a part of a movement for the health and well-being of our community. Though some participate in the walk or volunteer on their own, the occasion can be made extra special when one gathers people to register a team who together can help finance live-saving programs and patient services.”

Pier’s not all work – she likes to push the boundaries and get out of her comfort zone. She took up guitar late in life and played with a few amateur bands. She also tired her hand at acting for fun and was cast in a few national TV commercials. Though she says a “lack of time, talent, and patience cut short” her show guitar playing and

show biz career, she has clearly demonstrated her talent for bringing people together for the National Kidney Foundation’s causes and public information efforts. While she continues to practice her chords with her husband’s great encouragement, what matters most in her career is the regular opportunities to touch lives.

“I’ve always had an interest in health care,” she says. “Working for the NKF has really enabled me to learn about the healthcare industry and experience first hand the challenges people face in managing chronic illness. 30 million Americans have Kidney Disease, yet only about 10% of them are diagnosed. It’s a terrible and costly problem in terms of human suffering, and it is an enormous financial burden for patients and society as a whole.”

In 1991, Pier, a graduate of Hunter College in New York and USC’s Annenberg School, met Larry, an alumnus of Stanford and George Washington University Law School, when she was working for local public television station KCET through a mutual friend and producer at the station. The introduction led to their getting married in 1994. Today, Larry is going strong as a Partner at Hooper Lundy & Bookman, P.C., a national health care law firm based in Century City, and like his wife, has pastimes that focus on health and bringing friends and family together.

“Larry is an avid cook with a passionate interest in nutrition,” she says. “He devotes most weekends to making amazing meals. In addition to appreciating good food, we love to travel, hike and go for long walks. If he was not an attorney, I am confident he would have been a chef, searching out cool ingredients at all the local farmers markets and spending his days cooking and writing about how to eat glorious healthy food and prevent chronic illnesses such

as diabetes. We hosted a lot of dinner parties back in the day, and the best guests are those who really appreciate good food, good wine and great conversation…that’s a dream guest.”

She then pauses, and adds, “but, if Barak and Michelle Obama were available, we’d certainly welcome them, too.”

The couple has lived on a quiet street south of Ventura Blvd for the past 21 years. She cites the quiet of the area as well as the mature, surrounding landscape and the proximity to both the Valley and West Side activities as big draws. They are also fans of local private schools Buckley and Harvard Westlake, which their son attended. They enjoy hiking at the Tree People Park and the hills lining their Sherman Oaks neighborhood and look forward to returning to Fryman Canyon when it re-opens. Larry, a fan of team spectator

sports, has been an avid fan of the Lakers since 1963 and is happy that LA now has two football teams.

“We love our neighbors, as they are friendly, always willing to lend a hand, and have many interests,” she continues. “We love the shops and restaurants that are close by and are happy to see so many new ones come to our neighborhood. The local culinary scene has really grown in the past 21 years that we’ve lived here. It also goes without

saying that we love visiting the Studio City Farmer’s market on Sundays as well as the independent food shops like the Cheese Monger on Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks and The Spice Way in Studio City. Our all-time favorite “go to” is Augustine the lovely wine bar in Sherman Oaks.”

15% of US adults are estimated to have chronic kidney disease – that is about 30 million people.

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is the largest, most comprehensive and longstanding organization dedicated to the awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease. Here are some important statistics to consider:

    • 30 million American adults are estimated to have chronic kidney disease—and most aren’t aware of it.

    • 1 in 3 American adults are at risk for chronic kidney disease. Risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and family history.

    • People of African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian or Pacific Islander descent are at increased risk for developing the disease.

    • African Americans are three times more likely than Whites, and Hispanics are nearly 1.5 times more likely than non-Hispanics to develop end stage renal disease (kidney failure).

Xoft System: A New Hope For Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Patients

Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common type of skin cancer. While most NMSC occurs in people over the age of 50, it can occur earlier, especially among people who are very fair skinned and have excessive sun exposure. There are two major types of NMSC: basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Both BCC and SCC mostcommonly appear on the ears, face, scalp, chest, arms, hands and legs, including areas where treatment using standard surgery can be especially challenging and may result in severe and disfiguring scarring.

Advanced Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute in Sherman Oaks offers an innovative alternative treatment to surgery—Xoft System. It is done with skin electronic brachytherapy (eBx) using the Xoft® Axxent® Electronic Brachytherapy (eBx®) System®, involving a miniaturized high-dose rate x-ray source to deliver targeted radiation directly to a skin lesion. This targeted approach helps reduce the risk of radiation exposure to nearby healthy tissue. Treatment with skin eBx requires only two visits a week for four weeks and can be performed in an outpatient setting. Each skin eBx treatment session lasts only about three minutes. This convenient treatment is appealing, especially when compared to traditional radiation therapy that can require daily doses of radiation for up to six weeks. The skin eBx

treatment schedule allows most patients to resume their normal activities immediately after treatment.

For many years, the standard treatment for NMSC has been Mohs micrographic

surgery, which involves surgical removal of cancerous cells. While it has been effective for many patients, Mohs surgery can result in disfiguring scarring depending on the size and anatomic location of a lesion. In severe cases, patients may require corrective plastic surgery following Mohs surgery, resulting in additional costs and increased risk of complications. But treatment with skin eBx leaves virtually no scarring and has a reduced risk of other complications compared to surgery.

Skin eBx can be a very important and effective treatment alternative for many patients, including those with lesions in anatomically challenging locations, patients who may have trouble with wound

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR healing, patients who are on anticoagulants, those with medical comorbidities that may preclude them from surgery, or patients who may prefer not to have surgery for personal reasons.

It is important to note that not all NMSC patients will be ideal candidates for treatment with skin eBx. It is important to discuss the benefits and risks of different treatment options with your dermatologist to choose the treatment that is most appropriate for you. I have personally treated more than 100 patients with skin eBx, and consistently find that many prefer this option because it is proven to be safe and effective and has the aforementioned added benefits of a surgery alternative.

Homeowners insurance is one of the best ways to protect your possessions. However, you may own some high-value items that it alone doesn’t cover. Consider the following to determine if personal insurance may be right for you.

Personal article insurance: This category of insurance covers valuable items that your homeowners insurance may not protect, such as:

    • Furs

    • Jewelry, such as engagement or wedding rings

    • Electronics, such as digital cameras

    • Silver or other precious metals

    • Fine art

    • Sports and golf equipment

    • Other items with high financial value (typically worth $1,000 or more)

As you’re reviewing your possessions, consider making a home inventory. The list will be helpful in the event of theft or large-

scale damage in your home. Include details of high-value items, such as make, model, value and purchase date. You may also want to take photos of each item and store your home inventory digitally.

Personal liability insurance: If an accident happens at your fault or on your property, you could face a lawsuit or damages. While your existing policies may provide substantial insurance liability limits, a personal liability umbrella policy could provide additional liability coverage beyond that provided by your auto, homeowners and other personal liability policies.

Personal insurance options: Personal insurance policies may be a good fit for those who have high-value possessions or those who don’t want to risk potentially expensive personal liability.

From The Valley to Moms Halfway Around the Globe

The Sherman Oaks-based non-profit 2020 MicroClinic organization gets that the language of motherhood is universal. Working in partnership with the Kenya Ministry of Health, it has pushed to make pregnancy and childbirth in Keyna’s villages and under-served communities safer by offering a variety of sustainable and autonomous services from prenatal wellness to successful deliveries and healthier futures for mothers and children.

The cause has also drawn notable celebrities including actress Jean Smart (best known for her work in “Designing Women” and “Legion,” who spoke at the Pong to Save Moms fundraising event back in September.

The roots of the organization are traced to founder Dr. Moka Lantum, who discovered that many women in rural Kenya were not delivering their babies in local clinics because they had no clothes to dress their newborns after birth, he began providing baby clothes at clinics, and OpK was born. Today OpK offers baby clothes, emergency transportation, birth preparation, infant care training, and safe deliveries to thousands of the most vulnerable mothers in rural Kenya per year.

According to Dr. Lynne Davidson, Executive Director of 2020 MicroClinic Initiative, those services in turn, have led to an increase in life-saving prenatal care, malaria prevention, immunizations for newborns, and a decline in the rate of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Mothers learn the ropes about health preservation for themselves and their children through such tools as an innovative maternal health card game, Learning Pamoja, providing critical, life-saving information.

At 2020 MicroClinic Initiative, we believe pregnancy and childbirth should be safe for all mothers, says Dr. Davidson,” which is why we developed Operation Karibu (OpK) in rural Kenya. OpK provides warm clothes to thousands of newborn babies and safe healthcare to thousands of mothers.

Just like California produce, vegetarian and vegan-targeted restaurants grow year round. Devotees of those restaurants frequent them because they know what’s good for them. And on many occasions, their omnivore friends politely go along for the ride, with modest expectations.

With this in mind, Chef Jerry Yu used a 50-seat restaurant space on Ventura Boulevard as his canvas to craft Vegetable, spelled out as a jaunty, phonetic /vege•ta•ble/ on site. The result is a very different picture of what an organic vegetarian restaurant can be…one where omnivores will also feel welcome to the table and walk away from it both surprised and satisfied.

Fifteen months after its opening, Yu’s organically grown garden of earthly delights has won over health-conscious Studio City residents as well as picky executives from nearby Universal Studios and Warner Brothers. It’s also a go-to dining spot for celebrity environmentalists and vegetarians, including Ed Begley, Jr. The décor is “industrial chic,” warm and homey, with colorful chalkboards and a parade of dishes coming out of the kitchen.

Menu offerings range from signature mac-and-cheese spiked with red pepper to slow-roasted parsnips and sunchokes, fire-charred Brussels sprouts, blistered sweet potatoes with a spicy dry rub, and cast-iron pan-seared rainbow heritage carrots. There is also an equally interesting menu of cold-pressed juice, kombucha and iced tea libations to wash things down. Almost everything on the menu can be made gluten free, ensuring there really is something for everybody.

Although Yu and his team prove Vegetable, has a lot of clever culinary tricks in its arsenal, its most distinctive secret weapon is building a compelling menu with no meat-substitutes (including controversial soy products) or reworked versions of meat-centric dishes.

Yu has successfully won over even the biggest omnivore skeptics by not being afraid of bold flavor and a generous use of spice on many of its dishes. Besides the ever-popular signature mac-and-cheese (a permanent menu fixture), other dishes winning raves include Cheesy Fingerling Potato with nacho cashew cheese, Butternut Squash Toast with roasted garlic and butternut squash butter, Spicy BBQ Sweet Potato sandwich with Bulleit Bourbon, and Smoked Three-Bean Chili.

One of Yu’s standouts is a powerful pyramid of flavor with a base of hearty corn cakes topped with spicy chickpea and sweet onion
