The Bridge Educational Trust

The Bridge Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1068720) was

established in 1990 in memory of John Bridge, the last of the family

which founded the Piddle Valley School in the middle of the 19th century.

The objectives of the Trust are educational, and grants are given primarily to those

wishing to study at a school, college, or other educational establishment.

Applications are particularly welcomed from residents of the Piddle Valley and its

immediate neighbourhood. Normally applicants should be nearing the end of their

school careers or have left school, though younger children with special educational

needs may be considered.

At the Trustees’ discretion, expeditions or travel groups for young people which are

organised for scientific or cultural purposes may be eligible,

provided they contain an educational element.

The Trustees give priority to cases involving hardship or difficult family

circumstances and where, without some assistance, the desired education, course or

activity would not be possible. Special consideration is given to older people who may

wish to start training for a particular career or other purpose after normal

education has been interrupted.

During the past year grants made by the Trust have included those to help

university students with accommodation costs and equipment; to provide support

for children with specific learning difficulties; and to provide training for adults

hoping to change career.

Meetings of Trustees to consider applications are held in March, July and November.

Those wishing to apply should obtain an application form by writing to

The Administrator c/o Piddle Valley First School, Piddletrenthide, DT2 7QL or by

emailing [email protected]. Applications by post or email should

be received not later than the 15th of the month before the meeting at which they

are to be considered.

Further details of the Trust can be found at www.bridgeeducationaltrust.org.uk

but if you feel that you would like to discuss a possible application with one of the

local Trustees, please contact one of the following:

Rev Tony Monds (348211), Rex Goddard (348363), Sue Nicholas (348436),

Hannah Murphy (348564), Richard Drewe (348253), Nick Harland (348272)

From the editor ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After many weeks of sunshine and warmth, September heralds perhaps the beginningof an Indian summer but also the new school year and for Piddle Valley First School, anew acting head teacher, so a warm welcome to Jayne Brown.

The season of summer fetes has come to an end with the Gardens Club Summer Show- Ian Condon’s photographs include serious study of the cakes and home produce aswell as the new crop of winners ! In this issue you will find many dates for your diary,a choice of musical entertainment and talks, sports and dancing activities as well as aplea from Piddle Valley Players for new candidates to take part in their forthcomingproduction. A reminder too of a new year approaching with the chance to obtain a2015 diary. My thanks to Colin Davies not only for his excellent Review detailing theindividual performers of one summer concert but for pointing out a difficulty in ourlayout for those with restricted sight. I hope that the omission of the T and E in ourcontact details is an improvement and will make it easier for all to contact us.

Sadly, it has not been possible to include news of The Piddle Inn - we understand fromthe agents that an offer has been accepted so hope the business will be re-opening soon.

While extensive coverage of the Great War continues, this issue explains whatconstituted a Regiment. Though many in the community have experience orinvolvement with the military, many of us have little knowledge of this area of life.

New advertisers have let us know that their business has increased through advertisingand we are grateful to all for continuing to support PVNV. Do let the webmaster knowas soon as event dates are agreed so they can be included in the online diary whichmight avoid the ‘double booking’ scenario, and please do continue to send in yourletters, reviews, event news and contributions.. We appreciate all feedback whetherappreciative or critical !

News from the Vicarage ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Contrasting Harvests

Our celebrations of the harvest begin in September and continue in October – see theservices timetable for details. The harvest started remarkably early this year. The firstcombine that I saw in action was at Kingcombe on the 11th July - and that was workingin tandem with another ! Seeing this high-tech and hugely expensive machinery atwork in Dorset is commonplace in marked contrast to countries such as Sudan andSouth Sudan. Our diocese is linked with the Episcopal Church of Sudan and SouthSudan. Sudan has been plagued by two brutal civil wars. Two million lives have beenlost as a result of fighting, famine and disease. Millions more were forced to flee theircommunities to escape the violence.

Christian Aid tells the story of one refugee.

Nyipock Majak fled his home as a young teenager to start a new life in the north ofSudan. He was finally able to return home to South Sudan three years ago, when theregion gained independence. Nyipock is just one of more than two million southernerswho have since gone back to live in South Sudan. Many of them arrived with few orno possessions and have depended on the kindness of local communities to help themget back on their feet.

Christian Aid’s partners are responding to the current humanitarian crisis in SouthSudan and also helping communities to develop in the long term. One of thosepartners, Hope Agency for Relief and Development (HARD), gave Nyipock a cash grantto build his own house. He is grateful to HARD for the stability and security a safehome brings.

Nyipock, who prides himself on working hard, then built his own clay oven. Now herises at six every morning to bake 600 loaves a day for his community. He dreams ofopening his own restaurant one day, saying : ‘With the profit, I would buy school uniforms for my children and pay for their school fees. If they got sick, I would be ableto pay for their treatment.’ and ‘I do help others where I can and let them have bread. It’s mainly elderly mothers and children, who have very little.’

Nyipock has so little, yet gives so much. As we celebrate God’s gifts to us this Harvest, let’s notforget communities affected by poverty and conflict around the world and do what we can to support them, perhaps by donating to Christian Aid. Acting together, we can turn our daily bread into a secure harvest for some of the world’s poorest people.

It is an implied movement, her enveloping, protective cloak swept behind with her pyramidal head held high, sur-veying her new surroundings. This life-size entity in the Close will be a new member inour rolling arts programme and we are looking forward to opportunities to use thisdistinctive sculpture as a focus for community engagement.’

News, comings & goings in the valley ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Alton Pancras

AP Truly local-man Derek Jeanes who, with late wife Edna, was the first occupantof the newly-built 1 Boldacre in 1956, has now moved to Acland Road in Dorchesterwhere he can receive the care he needs. He had worked for Waterman’s at BarcombeFarm from age 14 to 25, later becoming a postman and First Aid instructor.

AP Phil Parsons’ BNG Auto Services at Pulham grew from the former BucklandNewton Garage located where Stevens Walk is today, There is now an AP connectionas Max Gooding of Holcombe Mead joins Phil, Andy and Louis at this popular localservicing and repair business.

AP Recent church visitors include Glenn and Mary Drake visiting from NZ,accompanied by Stella and Barry Coverdale. Also Joleen and William Keen visiting thegrave of their grand- and great-grandparents Emily and William Brown who formerlylived at 5 Boldacre. Emily (nee Paulley) once made a kneeler for the church.

AP Linda Taylor visited from Yorkshire seeking information on herHarwood/Horwood ancestry. Our History Project files show that Harwood/Horwoodshad connections with Alton Mill, Meadow View, Cherry Cottage, Old Post Office andBox Cottage – and we were able to put her in touch with previous visitors to AP, fromBrisbane. They were searching the same family and they are definitely related.

AP Libby Owen was another visitor, visiting the graves of her ancestors WilliamBryant Draper and wife Susan. William and his son Richard of Alton Common Farmwere both killed in identical circumstances at the same location; horse and cartaccidents at Chalky Knapp in 1866 and 1889 respectively.

AP The word Tosh is used in some parts of the country to mean ‘rubbish ornonsense’ – except when it appears on one of Brian and Sallie Johnson’s brief greetingnotes. In their case it is their address – The Old School (teacher’s) House.

AP As with most things these days, our Speed Watch camera teams, and those inour neighbouring villages, have targets to achieve. Their’s is to catch nobody. Pleasehelp them achieve this.

AP We are keen in this column to say welcome and / or goodbye to our residentsbut in the light of our last edition, we will wait until the deeds have finally beenexchanged – or otherwise done !

Piddlehinton Fete at The Old RectorySaturday 19th July started with thunder, lightening and heavy rain but by the time Piddlehinton Church Fete opened at 2 pm, waterproofs were shed and the sun hadcome out. This was the start of a wonderful afternoon and evening in the grounds ofThe Old Rectory which culminated in over £4,900 being raised for St Mary’s Churchwith donations also being made to Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, the Village Halland Millennium Green.

Thanks must go firstly to Mr and Mrs Sandy Milne for their kind and generous hospitality in allowing the Fete to be held in the grounds of their lovely home. As wellas all the hard work actually on the day, for months beforehand a lot has to happen tomake this popular annual event successful. Grateful thanks to everyone, too numerousto mention individually, who gave their time and effort to ensure the success of theFete and the Evening BBQ. Thanks must also go to everyone who donated items forvarious stalls and to companies who supported the event.

Thank you one and all, once again, for the tremendous efforts and your support.

Piddletrenthide Memorial HallAnother urgent call for help ! The Memorial Hall was erected as a memorial to theyoung men from Piddletrenthide who lost their lives in the First World War. It seemsfitting in this Centenary year, which marks the start of WW1 that the Village, alongwith the residents of both Alton Pancras and Plush continue to use the Memorial Hall.It is regrettable that, although the Hall has been modernised over the past few years, the committee of Trustees who ensure the Hall is well maintained and viable financially, are either leaving the village or reaching an age at which they wish to hand the responsibility to new people.

The Memorial Hall really does need new Trustees, in particular a Secretary – would yoube willing to help run and improve this essential village facility? The Trustees meetabout six times a year, mainly in winter during the Artsreach events programme. Therange of the Trustees’ different talents keeps the hall going; DIY repairs, fund-raising,organising Artsreach events. Whatever your contribution, you will be very, very welcome.

Most villages still have a Village Hall and even though the Memorial Hall does not havea car park and is small, it is immaculately kept with a modern and well equipped kitchen(range cooker, dishwasher, fridge and other essentials), it has full disabled access; andin fact is all we have as a Village Hall at the moment! If at all possible please help byoffering to be a Trustee. Please contact

Piddle Valley Community Speed Watch Update

The Piddle Valley Community Speed Watch (CSW) has now been operating for some 5 months - In that period some 250 drivers have been recorded exceeding the threshold speed limit on our local roads.

Two sets of speed checking equipment are being purchased, so in future therewill be two separate groups, each with their own equipment, the first operating in Piddlehinton and Piddletrenthide, the second in Alton Pancras, Buckland Newton and Duntish.

It should be emphasised that the primary objective of the CSW is to educatedrivers to drive safely, within the 30 mph speed limit in our villages, not to "catch" people speeding.

28 people were killed and 334 seriously injured on Dorsets roads during 2013.

If you are willing to join this initiative – please contact one of the volunteers,or Dorchester East Safer Neighbourhood Team, telephone 101

Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Plan

Newsletter 10

To all residents and friends of the Piddle Valley

Planning rules are changing - nationally and locally. A new draft version of the WestDorset, Weymouth and Portland Local Plan, is about to be adopted. (These are theguidelines upon which planning officers make their decisions and can be found onthe Dorset for you website.) There is a lot of press coverage about the national shortage of housing. The Government is ‘relaxing’ planning in order to encouragebuilding, and this is being reflected locally. No longer will villages be discouraged ashousing sites and development will be concentrated on sites with good transport facilities around main roads and railway lines.

So what can a village do if it wants to protect views or areas from development ?Define those areas in a Neighbourhood Plan that if accepted will become part oflocal planning law. But to be credible and to pass scrutiny we have to provide housing somewhere in the Valley. Where should we build ? We all know the answerto that - ‘anywhere but next door to me’.

Over the past months people have suggested sites within the Valley that may be appropriate for new housing. We have collated these suggestions and the plans arenow open for all of you to comment on. They appear on the following pages andwe need you to tell us what you think, especially if you are in favour of any of theidentified sites. These are not definitive, they are a first draft; it is fine if you wantto object to a site but please don’t stop there, suggest an alternative. In the autumnwe will be holding separate meetings in each of the five villages so that we canreceive further specific feedback, after all it is the residents of their village thatshould decide where in their village is developed and what is preserved. .

The Neighbourhood Planning Group is made up ofpeople who eighteen months ago volunteered totake the project on, many of whom come from Piddletrenthide and Plush. We need fresh ideas andmore help, especially from the other villages. So ifyou are interested in playing a more active role thenplease get in touch.

Housing - both for open market and low cost for local peopleled by Malcolm Johnston [email protected] / 01300 34869

During the summer months the Housing Group has been concentrating on tellingpeople about our proposals for planned housing development in the Valley over thelifetime of the Neighbourhood Plan. Our emphasis continues to be identifying sitesfor Local housing with some 50 across the Valley appearing to be possible at thisstage.

We have been showing maps at the village fetes and asking for comment and ideas. At the Alton Pancras Fete on May 24th the map showed the whole Valley with theproposed village boundaries marked. These boundaries will allow the Plan to havepolicies for housing and other building development inside and outside villages. Asa result of comments received the positions of some boundaries were changed.

At the Piddletrenthide Fete on 22nd June the map showed the boundaries and alsothe sites within the villages, which we have identified as having the potential fornew housing during the 15 year life of the Plan. Comments were generallyfavourable and led to discussions that were valuable in improving our knowledge ofthe Valley.

At Piddlehinton fete on 19th July we showed the same map and again received helpful and informative comments. Some residents were unhappy about what theysaw and eight emails were subsequently sent and to which I responded on behalf ofthe Housing Group, explaining our thinking and clarifying some misunderstandings. We will be holding an informal meeting with those involved to discuss the sites further.

At the Gardens Club Show on 16th Augustthe maps initiated generally supportive discussion with one concerned commentrecorded.

The maps are reproduced on the followingpages.

This legend explains the symbols etc that wehave used on the maps. Opposite is a viewof the whole Valley. The enlarged maps ofeach village are then shown at the samescale.

They have changed the way we function as a family.” and “If it wasn’t for Home-Start I don’t think I would be here with three kids. I got to the place where I thoughtthey’d go into care.”

From 1st July 2013 to 30th June 2014, we supported 77 families including 123 childrenunder 5 and 68 children over 5. Sadly, we had to decline to support 33 families in thesame time period due to not having enough volunteers. David Powell, Chair of Trusteesat Home-Start West Dorset said “We hate to decline referrals and turn families away;we know that weekly visits from our committed volunteers have a really positive impactand make a real difference to the families they support. Recruiting and training newvolunteers will enable us to work towards meeting current demand for our service sowe can help more local families.”

If you could make a difference by becoming a Home-visiting volunteer, we would loveto hear from you. All you need is to be a parent or have parenting experience, attendour Volunteer Preparation Course and be willing to spare 2-3 hours a week to supporta family in need. Ideally, you will also be willing to commit to volunteer for a minimumof a year but preferably more.

Our Volunteer Preparation Course is the route to becoming a home-visiting volunteerand will provide you with the knowledge required for this role; the course provides aholistic view on the role of a volunteer and varied support we provide to our families. It involves 40 hours of training delivered one day a week, over 10 weeks, excludingschool holidays. Comments from newly trained volunteers as the course ended lastyear included: “It was informal yet serious, entertaining at times yet very informativeand I think they covered all we needed to be prepared for our first family.“ “I would just like to say to anybody, who is thinking about volunteering but is unsure, just take the plunge and make that phone call.”

Our next Preparation Course commences Tuesday 30th September at our Poundburyoffice. If you would like further information on this course, or would like to sign up toattend, please contact us on 01305 265072 or e-mail

Citizens Advice - Rabid Dogs and Burning CowsOne area of trading standards work that many people don’t realise we’re involved withis animal health and welfare to ensure that welfare standards for farmed animals areadhered to (the RSPCA look after domestic animals) and also to prevent the spread ofcertain diseases such as foot and mouth.

About 4 years ago my then boss decided it would be a good ‘career development opportunity’ to move me into the animal health team, having spent most of my careerdealing with counterfeit clothing. I had to quickly learn a whole new language suchas ‘hogget’ (a sheep over a year old) and ‘stirk’ (a one year old heifer or bullock). Withintwo weeks of joining the team, I received a call from Defra to say they had taken samples from a dead cow that may have anthrax. They then dropped the bombshellthat it was my problem to dispose of the carcass by burning it in situ. A number offrantic phone calls later and our well prepared emergency plans were set in motionand I found myself as part of a team on a hill side with a digger, a ton of coal, a pile ofrailway sleepers and a dead cow. It was the middle of January and I had to stay in thefield all night to keep the fire burning; I will never forget cracking the frost off a bagof coal at 2 am wondering how this was developing my career. Thankfully the resultscame back negative.

Another issue we are responsible for policing is rabies; there are strict importation con-trols for animals coming into the UK but over the last two years we have had quite afew cases of pedigree puppies being smuggled into the country. In all cases it is theinnocent new owner of a puppy who is then told the dog will have to go into quarantine at their expense so please be very careful if you are thinking of buying apedigree puppy.

For advice or to report an issue contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on03454 040506; if you’re a business looking for animal health or welfare advice call uson 01305 224475.

DCC Trading Standards“We do not deal with uninvited traders” is the message DCC Trading Standards Serviceis giving to cold calling traders with our new refreshed door stickers. Maybe you seea knock at the door from an uninvited trader as an inconvenience or annoyance; somepeople find it threatening having to say no to someone uninvited on their doorstep, especially if it’s high pressure selling for anything from a packet of dusters to buildingwork.

Uninvited doorstep traders will use all sorts of techniques to try to get you to say yes, that’s their job after all, and they are experts at it; you’ve heard the patter ‘We’re onlyin the area today’, ‘We’ve some material left from a job up the road’, ‘You’ll have toagree now to get this price’. Perhaps you’ve fallen for it in the past? Many Dorsetresidents have decided to say ‘No’ to uninvited doorstep traders by displaying one ofour bright doorcards and they have proved to be one of the most popular resourceswe produce.

Now refreshed and updated the ‘We do not deal with uninvited traders’ doorstickercomes in two parts - there is an outside sticker for your front door with a clearly visiblemessage to uninvited traders and there is an inside sticker to act as a reminder withphone numbers for who to call if you need advice, assistance, or to report a caller.

Recently it’s become a criminal offence for a trader not to leave your home when asked,or to return again another time. We and those we work with, Dorset Police and CouncilCommunity Safety teams, hope the newly refreshed stickers will help you to say ‘No’by deterring uninvited traders from knocking at your door. So why not pick up a pairof stickers at the WDDC reception or by sending a small letter sized stamped addressedenvelope to: No Uninvited Doorstep Traders, Trading Standards Service, CollitonAnnexe, Colliton Park, Dorchester, DT1 1XJ.

Your Safer Neighbourhood Team - Cycle Thefts4 bikes and lanterns have recently been stolen in the Dorchester policing area in oneweek. Much has been said regarding security, and it is really important to lock andsecure unattended bikes but it is just as important to be able to identify your bikeshould it ever get lost, stolen or mislaid. Would you be able to identify your bike ? Ormore importantly, can you describe your bike in a manner that will allow a police officerto recognise it ? Why not take a few minutes to take a photograph of your bike andkeep a detailed record, including make, model, colour, type e.g Mountain Bike, BMX,child’s, ladies etc. any damage, stickers and accessories.

Please contact the Dorset Police on 101, or your Safer Neighbourhood Team on theirmobile phone, if you have any information that can help identify those responsible forthese crimes, or can help recover any of the stolen property. You are also asked toreport all suspicious incidents as soon as practical.

Autumn is the perfect opportunity to remind you about the dangers you can face inyour home as the weather turns colder.

A working smoke alarm is one of the most important things you can own. It willprovide you with an early warnings of a fire, giving you time to escape. If you ownone, you’re half way there, just make sure you test it once a week and replace thebatteries when necessary.

We usually see an increase in chimney fires over the autumn period. Chimney fires arepreventable if the right precautions are taken. Having your chimney swept is vital. Thefunction of sweeping the flue/chimney is to remove the deposits that build up; bysweeping the flue/chimney it ensures that there is a clear and safe passage for the safeexit of combustion products, which are caused by the burning process. This lessens thechances of the chimney catching fire.

If you are putting the fire or the woodburner on, please consider a guard and how faraway combustible materials are, like clothes. Don’t forget to make sure all the embersare under control and put out properly when you go to bed !

As the evenings draw in, candles are also great to create an atmosphere and add someextra light – just don’t leave them unattended. Make sure you put them out beforeyou go to bed and you use an appropriate base for them, like a plate.

Cooking has been the cause of over 50% of accidental fires in the home that we haveattended over the last year (2012/13). When cooking, don’t be distracted and pleasedon’t leave anything unattended. If you have to leave the kitchen, think about turningoff the hob or using a timer – that way cooking won’t be forgotten about!

Finally, have you received a home safety check from Dorset Fire and Rescue Service ?We provide them free of charge and we will give you bespoke home safety advicedesigned around you and your home such as escape routes, cooking, electrics andmuch much more. An hour of your time could save your life and if it’s appropriate ourstaff will fit free smoke alarms too.

To sign up call 01305 252600 or check our website www.dorsetfire.gov.uk

We’ll be attending flu clinics across Dorset this autumn, where you can also sign upfor a FREE Home Safety Check.

Flower Show at Piddletrenthide Frst School

In a change to the usual arrangements this year the Piddle Valley Gardens Club heldtheir Flower Show in the hall of the Piddle Valley First School instead of in a marqueein a garden or field. Although the total number of entries was down a bit the qualityof the flowers, vegetables, home cooking and photography was as good as ever. Agood number of Gardens Club members were in attendance and were joined by manyvisitors. As usual with Garden Club events, the excellent cream teas were a greatsuccess. A big thanks to everyone who took part and and those who worked hardbehind the scenes, dealing with entries, shifting tables and catering. Thanks also tothe judges and to the Headteacher and Governors of the school.

Democratic “half-hour”A nominal 30 minutes is set aside at the start of each Parish Council meeting, formembers of the public to raise any issues about which they have concerns, ask questions of the Council or make comments. When the Chair considers that thosematters have been adequately dealt with, the meeting moves into its formal element. From that point on, members of the public are welcome to remain and listen to proceedings, but they may not speak on any issue. However, if the Chair considers thata person in the audience would be able to provide the Council with any informationor answers to questions which would aid the Council in their deliberations, that personmay be invited to speak briefly on the matter.

Piddlehinton Parish CouncillorThere is still a further vacancy for a co-opted Parish Councillor. If you are interested, please contact the Chairman – John Cox, on 01300 348454.

Fly TippingThere has been a sudden increase in the amount of fly tipping being experienced inthe Valley. Some has been at Enterprise Park, but also in Egypt and White Lackington. It is a criminal offence to tip rubbish. If anyone sees or hears anything which mightlead to apprehension of the culprits, please contact either the Police on 101, or theEnvironment Agency or the Local Council.

BonfiresWe have been asked by the Fire Service to request that anyone lighting a bonfire shouldcontact them on 01305 753166 beforehand, so the Fire Service is forewarned. Thismeans that if there is subsequently a report of a possible fire in the vicinity, they cancheck with the householder first before turning out the retained Firefighters. This willsave considerable costs and also mean that the appliance will not be tied up unnecessarily when it might be required at a serious fire elsewhere.

Enterprise Park Transit Camp siteThe site is now in operation and has already been put to use. If residents in the Valleyexperience problems which they believe may be associated with the operation of thissite, please ensure your local Parish Councillor, and if necessary the Police, are informedso that it can be investigated and appropriate records can be kept. If there are genuineproblems arising from the use of the site, these records will be of great help in makinga case to the County Council that the temporary planning consent is not renewed inthree years time.

Artsreach at Piddle Valley School

The Piddle Valley School has been buzzing with Artsreach summer workshops recently. On Friday 25th July 14 children spent the day making a fantastic stop motion film withthe help of Claire of Small World Animations. Raiders of the Ridgeway was the themeand a variety of fantastically bearded Vikings and a range of interesting animals werecreated. There was even a Viking penguin ! The children shared their ideas and madeup a plot which saw their characters travelling in long boats to the Viking World Cup!

On Monday 28th July Treehouse Theatre returned to the Valley for an afternoon of Pirates and Princesses, songs and stories . The children had come prepared, parrots on shoulders, crowns on heads, gorgeous dresses, eye patches, cutlasses at the ready...Their ideas were crafted into a story by Ben of Treehouse Theatre. The Pocket WatchPirates took to sea in the school's own ship and dug for treasure on a tropical island.

On Friday 29th August the last workshop of the summer will be a fun, energetic, contemporary African dance workshop based on songs from the Lion King. It is fullybooked but do keep an eye out for next year's events.

And remember to book early .....

Farewell and Welcome

At the end of the summer term, all connected with Piddle Valley CE VA First School(Piddle Valley) bid a very fond farewell to our Headteacher, Tracy Jones. Tracy joinedus in September 2011 and continued the progress that our school had already beenmaking. When she joined us, Tracy and her family were living in Wareham but, forgood family reasons, they moved to Swanage at the beginning of this year. The dailyjourney to the Piddle Valley from Swanage and then home again at the end of a longday is not an enviable one and so it was inevitable that, when an opportunity arose towork closer to home, Tracy would take it. That opportunity did arise at St Mark’sPrimary School, Swanage and, while sad for ourselves, we are delighted for Tracy andfor her family who may now have a chance of seeing something more of her in thefuture than they have been used to in the last three years !

Because of the timing of Tracy’s resignation as soon as she was offered her new job atthe end of April, it was not possible to advertise for and appoint another Headteacherin time for this autumn. The governors are, however, delighted that we have beenable to second Jayne Brown from Broadmayne First School to be our actingHeadteacher for one year with effect from the 1st September.

Broadmayne is a similar school to ours (though about half as big again) and a memberof the Dorchester Area Schools Partnership (DASP), as is Piddle Valley. That we havebeen able to make this appointment so easily is an example of the benefits of DASPand of local schools working together collaboratively for the benefit of all our children.During the coming year, we will be able to take stock in the fast moving world that iseducation today with a view to making a more permanent appointment with effectfrom the 1st September 2015.

Jayne is an enthusiastic, committed and experienced primary school deputyheadteacher with over 23 years’ experience in teaching. Having graduated from ExeterUniversity (BA (Hons) Art and Design), Jayne began her teaching career at Damers FirstSchool in Dorchester, also a member of DASP. In 1999, she moved to Southill PrimarySchool in Weymouth where she rose to become acting deputy headteacher. Whilethere she also broadened her experience, in particular in the field of Special EducationalNeeds (SEN). Two years ago, she moved to be deputy headteacher at Broadmayne FirstSchool, Key Stage 1 co-ordinator, deputy designated person – safeguarding, healthand safety co-ordinator, RE co-ordinator, and PE co-ordinator - as well as a class teacher!

We are all looking forward to Piddle Valley continuing its progress under Jayne’sleadership when the new academic year begins in September.

The Great War ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Piddle Valley Piddle Valley Losses in the Great War

As the Valley suffered no losses in September and October1914, the editor and I felt that this issue of News & Views couldexplain how an infantry regiment, such as the DorsetshireRegiment, was organised. It’s not too complicated !

An infantry regiment did not fight as such; its fighting units were its Battalions and in1914 a Battalion numbered about 1,000 men of all ranks commanded by a Lieutenant-Colonel. There was no limit to the number of Battalions a regiment could raise.

The Battalion was divided into four companies which were lettered A, B, C and D;there was also a small HQ Company. Companies were in four Platoons and these werenumbered, thus, A Company has Platoons 1, 2, 3 and 4, B Company 5, 6, 7 and 8 andso on. Platoons were made up of four Sections, which were the smallest unit within aBattalion.

How did the Battalion fit into higher formations ? Four Battallions, not necessarily fromthe same Regiment, comprised a Brigade. Above the Brigade came the Division which,in addition to three infantry Brigades (12,000 men) included artillery (3,000 men),engineers, medical and veterinary units, cavalry elements and supply units. A Divisionnumbered between 18,000 and 20,000 men together with about 5,600 horses andmotor transport. It was, in effect, a small town with all the domestic needs of a town.On the march a Division stretched 15 miles.

When a Battalion went into the front line it would leave behind about 200 men. Theseacted as carrying parties to take ammunition, water, food and stores up to the trencheseach night. The men ‘left out of battle’ also acted as stretcher bearers if casualtieswere heavy and should a Battalion suffer badly in battle, they formed a nucleus aroundwhich a new Battalion would be built.

The Dorsetshire Regiment had six fighting Battalions in the War. The 1st and 2ndBattalions were the pre-war Regular Battalions. The 4th Battalion was originally theTerritorial Battalion. (Territorials were, before the war, civilians who trained part-timeto form a home defence force.) When war was declared, the Territorials were mobilisedand volunteered for overseas service. The 4th Dorsets expanded into two Battalions -1/4th and 2/4th. Two further Battalions - the 5th and 6th - were raised for the durationof the War and were known as Service Battalions or Kitchenener Battalions, namedafter Lord Kitchener, the Secretary of State for War. It was in the 5th and 6th Battalionsthat many men from the Valley served. Finally, the Dorsets had various HomeService and Reserve Battalions which did not serve overseas but were intended forhome defence and training.

Thanks must also go to the ever reliable Elizabeth Sweetnam for her polished and neverfailing accompaniment of the young singers. Meanwhile hiding beneath the pulpitand a pillar was young ‘Brad the Electronic Wizard’ who was doing magic with items Iwill never understand. We evidently had to pay an enormous sum of money to thePV Players in transfer fees so Brad could play for us for one night (my accountant adviseszero euros).

At half time we were served the most wonderful canapes home cooked by an army ofvery clever ladies which kept on coming until we had to retire to the bar where asommelier called Brian B opened bottles of wine to wash the canapes down !

The serious thanks must go to Sue Beckingham and Janet Keen as without theirconstant work and organisation, these concerts would not get off the ground. Theyin turn tell me that without dozens of volunteers in the Valley, they couldn’t cope. Thanks to all for a wonderful evening generously given by children from 7 years old toVSOPs (very special older people). Roll-on the next concert and will someone pleasestop Janet and Sue from leaving the Valley for ever !

We must use our Valley Churches more often for social gatherings. The ancientbuildings deserve to be useful and Tony Monds might be able to eventually put betterfaciities and heating into them.

Review ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hudson & Friends Summer Concert

“Local performers create a professional event” - six totally different local peopleentertained a full church for 21/2 hours with music from classical to jazz.

John Hudson is a professional Opera singer so good he needs no instrument excepthis golden Tenor voice. With his northern humour and choice of popular well knownarias, he held the audience spell-bound to end the concert and an emotional duet from“La Boheme” with the help of Camilla Foster-Mitchell finished the evening in real style.

Magdalena Atkinson has given many local recitals over the last few years and is a greatsupporter of these concerts. This time not only was her rich voice beautiful whilst softand husky in the parts that she sang, but also when she accompanied herself with ararely heard instrument, called a Dulcifer. The effect was magical. Camilla Foster-Mitchell, whose family were from our area came down expecially from London whereshe is a music teacher. She appeared at the altar steps in a stunning cream long dress, perfect for an opera singer. Her voice is equally stunning with a clarity and tonemesmerising and rich. Thank you for the treat of the famous song of the moon byDvorjak.

The surprise of the night had to be the appearance of our local ‘medic’ Jon Chamberswho left his white coat and mask at work and turned into an expert clarinet playergiving us a very accurate and intense version of the 2nd movement of Mozart’s ClarinetConcerto. One of the world’s most romantic and beautiful 12 minutes of music.Without hesitation or fuss he picked up a glorious saxophone and played a well knownjazz piece imaculately.

Simon Grainger changed the whole musical scene by demonstrating that a modernelectronic keyboard can one minute sound like a harpsicord to play Haydn from 200years ago, then immediately turn to the 1920s to play Scott Joplin’s jazz rag. What aremarkable talent in 10 fingers !

The sixth ‘contributor’ to this marvellous concert was so remarkable and in openingthe evening first created the atmosphere for all the others to follow. Some twenty oddpairs of little feet of the young boys and girls of the Piddle Valley C of E First Schoolremarkably gave us their current version of ‘Wind in the Willows’ sung with clarity andaccuracy to original music. With great confidence they walked down the central aisleof the Church still singing whilst walking and dancing with great expressiveness.Congratulations to the teachers who coached them and for their enthusiasm whichwas contagious.

Pulse Check ScreeningThis year we will be offering a pulse check to all patients over the age of 65 whoattend for a flu vaccination. This is to help us identify patients with a conditioncalled Atrial Fibrillation (AF). It is important to do this as AF is a major cause ofStroke. If an irregular pulse is detected, then the person will be offered an ap-pointment in an ECG clinic within a few days that will then be assessed by a GP.We would encourage all our eligible patients to accept this offer of screeningPlease allow extra time for a pulse check to be carried out.

Routine immunisation of fit adults is NOT recommended. A nasal spray flu vaccinewill be offered to all children who on the 1st September 2014 are two, three orfour years of age.
